When & Why Did the Shifted Numeral Two Change on Keyboards?

Recommended Posts

I don't like the idea of Armor-all on the platen. It is silicone based and could lead to paper slippage and misalignment.

I'm just talking about a "US Quarter"-sized amount, applied with a folded up paper towel, and dispersed across the entire cylinder of the platen. It protects the rubber, and makes it look nice. But, you're right, I wouldn't do this on a dot matrix printer. This thing, however has such a firm grip on the page that slippage could never occur, no matter what you did. It literally feels 3x tighter than when you insert a page into a dot matrix printer, using friction-feed. They really engineered mechanical stuff correctly, back in the 1930s.

Can one apply that to 1050 drive belts as well?

If it's a rubber belt, sure. I used to work at a buddy's repair store. Went through bottles of the stuff back when VCRs were still expensive enough to be repaired rather than thrown away. If the rubber has gotten to the point where it is more like gel, or no longer has elasticity, this won't work. But it's great for any belt or tire that is glazed or needs a good cleaning.

I was investigating the picture from the letter I typed to UNIX... and I really appreciate the quality of the letter. They are so crisp. And every character is perfectly on the right 'line'... yeah this was really a good purchase.

Great invention, The Typewriter!
