Gabriel
Thunder Force III, easily.
Rhomaios
I do like the Super Nintendo's graphical detail better, but in every other way the Genesis is superior, which is surprising to me since because I usually prefer the Super Nintendo's music to the Yahama sound chip. The different stages too suck in comparison.

mbd30
I own "Thunder Spirits" but not "Thunder Force III". But TFIII is probably the better game since it has the stage select.

mbd30
Thunder Force III. Not that either is very good, really... *ducks* I like TFIII, but "Gaiares" is probably my all time favorite space shooter on the system. It's underrated, IMO. You never hear about it as much as the TF series and "MUSHA". Because it's a memorization game, I've gotten far in it even though I'm not great at shooters. I used to be able to get to stage six on one ship. Unfortunately I could never figure out the stage six boss. There are some really cool level designs and boss battles such as the space castle that leads to the grim reaper. It is a challenging game so a lot of players might just give up before they get to see the cool stuff.
Neo Gamer
I like the Thunder Spirits, because of the 'slowdown'. very easy to dodge the shots

Austin
Intentionally trollish responses aside, good games for their time. It's just hard for me to go back to them after Thunder Force IV. Sheer perfection for the era and it withstands the test of time gracefully. They really went all out on that one.

Skippy B. Coyote
Thunder Force III by a mile, if for no other reason than the music.
CRV
For whatever reason, Thunder Force III is my favorite Thunder Force. TFIV demonstrates, I think, some sort of shift because at least three of the people who worked on II and III (and the Herzog games) left the company. Gabriel
TFIII > TFIV Why so? For me, TF4 (Lightening Force) simply has better visuals and music. I absolutely love the stage 8 theme, and have been known to pop in the cart just to listen to the music. The gameplay just feels more satisfying to me as well, and the bosses and environments seem cooler. In the interest of full disclosure though, I was exposed to TF4 about 15 years before I ever got a glimpse of TF3. TF3 really has that mid/early Genesis title look, and it's hard for me to go back after how polished TF4 is. Parallax Scroll
Thunder Force III without a doubt. A better alternative to Thunder Spirits is Thunder Force AC
chuckwalla
I've owned both in the past but TFIII is best unless you like slowdown (plus the Genesis controllers provide better control). If you want to play them on original hardware then try to get a copy of both. Many times it's interesting to play the same game on different hardware. +save2600
Nice video comparison! TFIII - thanks to the Genny's blast processing, hardly any slowdown! Colors may be a little more vibrant on the SNES, but I also like the look of the score and weapon options up top on the Genesis version better. Eltigro
I have both. Just recently picked up the Thunder Spirits, so haven't played it as much. I do better on Thunder Force III, though. Don't know if it's a difference in game difficulty or the controller or what.
Parallax Scroll
Here's a low-res image of a flyer for ThunderForce AC I couldn't find a better one and http://flyers.arcade-museum.com doesn'thave it at all.
