HSC12 Round 13: Diamond Mine (Roklan)

Recommended Posts

Returning to the HSC is Diamond Mine (Roklan)

Sort of Nibbler meets Crossfire, probably, ok it's fun, if hard to see on PAL systems on some levels! Set the new HSC record for a bonus point (held by Scalak 85,205). Emulator users need to turn on artifacting to get the colours - post if you want any help :)Full details on the game are on Post #5 thanks to Ballyalley

With bonus game Diamond Mine (Blue Ribbon)

Looks like an Oils' Well / Aardy the Aardvaak Ardvark Aardvaaaark Rdvork Ant-Eater! style game. If it plays well scoring will be a combination of both games, otherwise will be a bonus game 1pt per player perhaps :)

What? There's another one! ok Diamond Mine by (Sydney Brown) is only a two player game? so if you can rope in a friend you'll get some extra bonus points.

Ok, the gameplay is not completely clear to me. Do I have to store the diamonds in the "warehouse" before I can leave the level with them, or is it just an option? Sometime I get a bonus, but I don't know why. For storing the diamonds, for being quick or anything else? I don't know.

Wow, I really like the box artwork for "Diamond Mine!" Check it out:

I OCRed the description for the Atari Home Computer version of "Diamond Mine:"

IDSI's
"Diamond Mine"
by Roklan

Ready to begin an exciting quest for fabulous diamonds far below the earth's surface? Then hop into your Subterranean Mining Vehicle and get ready for a fast-paced arcade game that puts your reaction time and strategic thinking to the test. Whether you play Diamond Mine by yourself or engage in head-to-head competition with a friend, only the most skillful are ever likely to reach the deepest of the 20 monster-filled mine shafts. A huge underground labyrinth beckons you to seize its fabulous treasure.

Joystick Required

I couldn't find the documentation for the Atari version of this game, but I did find documentation (in all-caps, ugh) for the Apple II game. These don't appear to be the re-typed docs, or, if they are re-typed, then additional comments from the original game cracker(s) was added to the instructions. I changed the all-caps to lowercase and have eliminated the extra-spaces (used because the original text was justified for a 40-column Apple II). I'm including the documentation here. This should clear-up some questions that have been asked so far.

Note: The above mono-spaced text (below) may be is interpreted code and may be given colors, but this will, I think, vary from browser to browser. Is there a way to avoid this while still using the BBCode "Code" statement, which is the only dependable way that I know to create what I want: mono-spaced text (i.e. plain text). The text below isn't actually code, yet I only can figure-out how to do this using "code=auto:0". There must be a better way. I sure wrestled with this post try to make it look correct... without success. Ah, well. At least the docs are now available for those that need them.

           *************
           * Game Play *
           *************

Move your vehicle on the elevator to the desired mine shaft. Enter the Cave.
As you move, you dig through the dirt. You move faster in Pathways that are
already cleared. You may shoot the monsters, who attempt to hamper your
progress. However, they will reappear in a few seconds. There are eight
diamonds in each level. You must take each Diamond, process it and bring it
out of the mine. As you take a Diamond, it will follow behind you -- kinda
like Serpentine. The Monsters can eat your diamonds only when you are carrying
them. But you can't take diamonds immediately out of the mine! You must
process them first. The processing box looks like this:

               !-------------! Bring Diamonds
               ! !
               ! ! <<<---
               !  <>      #  !  --->>>
               ! !
               ! !----! Take Diamonds
               ! !
               !(WAITING! <> = Diamond Storage
! AREA)! # = Number Of Diamonds In
               ! ! Storage Area
               !--------!

                    !
                    !
                  \ ! /
                   \ /

               Exit & Leave
                 Diamonds

To take the diamonds out of the mine for the most points, you should queue them
up; that is, move all eight to the storage area and then move them out. The
upper-right is an entry/exit area. Diamonds can be brought in or removed from
this area. The bottom is an exit to leave the diamonds in the processing area.

You will find two U-Shaped, heavy bordered squares. These are Teleporters.
Moving into one will transport you to the other.

If you complete five dungeons with less than five diamonds lost and still are
alive, the game will give you a password. Use the password later to skip
beginning levels. There are seven levels in all.

> Special Notes <

*> A key in the latter dungeons is to be processed like a regular Diamond.
*> Monsters are shy when you have a key.
*> There are special transporters that require a key-- they will transport you
to another area of the shaft.

           ***********
           * Scoring *
           ***********

At level one (score increases later):

Picking up Diamond...............25 pts
Processing Diamond...............25 pts
Killing Monster..................75 pts
Getting Diamond Out.............100 pts

           -- Bonus Points --

Leaving w/4 Diamonds............300 pts
Leaving w/5 Diamonds............500 pts
Leaving w/6 Diamonds............600 pts
Leaving w/7 Diamonds............800 pts
Leaving w/8 Diamonds...........1000 pts
Leaving w/8 Diamonds & Key.....1200 pts

    Extra vehicle at 20,000 points

               Have fun!

              The Intern
           The Chief Surgeon

Does anyone have the instructions for the official Atari release of "Diamond Mine?"

I seem to have hit a bug a few times. When I reach the end of the first 5 levels (1-5) the game doesn't move onto the next 5 (6-10) but instead replays the first 5 again.

It seems to coincide with a good go where I haven't lost any diamonds in completing the first 5 levels. It's very annoying!

rr / jb you might get some colour if you look at enabling the artifacting under the emulator's video settings ;)

I'm on a different old PAL CRT to last time we played and think the artifacting is better though it still costs me a few lives. 56,535 after a bunch of goes - I had to replay shafts 1-5 as I only recovered 1? on Shaft 5 (did well on 1-4)... now I'm going to READ THE MANUAL (above) properly. Figured out Control A turns the sound off and Space is pause and extra man every 20K

p.s. no I didn't hack in 999,999 lives - this was when I hit pause in the game over stage !

5525. Should have read ahead in the thread to figure out what to do!

New podcast (and one by Antic too) - at last I can do more ironing :D

I'm not sure about having to recover 1-5, I thought it was a bug. I cleared 1-5 without losing a diamond and on more than one occasion didn't progress to 6-10

Nothing in the (Apple II) manual so we'll see if we can spot anything HSCers ;)

Playing Modes: 1 Player, 2 Player Cooperative, 2 Player Competitive

Diamond Mine might be a decent game for 2 players too :)

Ahh I wondered what that did - plus Leaving w/8 Diamonds & Key.....1200 pts 8)
