Here's how the competition will work: 1) Play the game of the month in whatever format you choose, emulation or REAL DEAL. We can trust you're not cheating, hopefully. Once you have achieved a high score to your liking, post a picture of the score here... You can use a camera for your TI monitor, or feel free to take a screenshot in Classic99, MESS, whatever. Post scores as many times as you like, no limit. 2) At the end of the month, an award will be given to the high-score champion. 3) The winner of the contest must then select the game for the next month and offer up a prize to the winner. I will be keeping a record of all high score champions and will update the first post of this thread when a new champ is crowned. (Al, I'm going to need the ability to update the first post of this thread indefinitely please) Notes: *If you are the champion, you can definitely play and post scores for the game of your choosing, but you are not eligible to win your own prize. *If your prize is PHYSICAL (not required) and you intend on paying all shipping charges, please indicate so in your post. *Please post pictures of your offered prize if it is physical. *The prize does not have to be valuable, but I would prefer if it were TI-related... Something as small as a dual cassette cable or a used Alpiner cartridge might be good prizes. Or, if you choose, offer up your GRAM Kracker and Killer Caterpillar cartridge. *Competition ends at 11:59:59 EST on the last day of the calendar month *Not required (but certainly acceptable): attach a zip of the game to your post or a link to where it can be downloaded. When posting your game for the month (assuming you won the previous month) please follow the format below. ********************************************************************************* ********************************************************************************* ********************************************************************************* TI-99/4A High Score Challenge Month: August, 2015 Game: Munchman Prize: A "Compute! TI GAMES" spiral-bound book Shipping: I will pay shipping, international shipping included ****************************************************************************************************** ****************************************************************************************************** ****************************************************************************************************** So that's it... Let the games begin!!! Oh, I took the liberty of blowing through a few levels of Munchman so that I could offer the first petty meager score to be bested. (*hint*--if you've never played this game before, the score I posted is childs-play... Use a good set of sticks and blow this one out of the water) I hope you all have fun with this and that we build some steam with this competition!!
Omega-TI
Do you have a link to download Munchman? I don't have this game in my collection for R.I.
Opry99er
Hmm... It is on Classic99's dropdown games menu and I have a few in cart format... Perhaps it would be good to post an EA5 version for those wishing to transfer and game on real gear. I do not have one handy, but multiple DBs have it.... Or I'm sure someone will be along shortly to post one. Edited August 12, 2015 by Opry99er

Opry99er
Yea, competition ends at month's end... If it takes a few days to get the next one set up, it will still end at 23:59:59 of the last day of the month. I will add that to the top, thanks Chris! sometimes99er
What a great idea / initiative ! Yea, competition ends at month's end... If it takes a few days to get the next one set up, it will still end at 23:59:59 of the last day of the month. I think you'll have to state what timezone counts. sometimes99er
Backstory So I had this one (Munchman) back in 1982-83. One of the better games. Good action. Back then I guess I played it at 50Hz and that that made a difference !? Competition Guess we're all supposed to play at 60Hz and with no pausing of game allowed for doorbell, glass of water, regaining physical strength etc. ? My entry When I got to level 13 I thought, I'm afraid my arm and fingers are going to fall off, - I'd better stop. Then I lost my first life, and saw it through. Very doubtful if I'll have another attempt. Some of the corners are ... darn tight.
globeron
Good idea! (I guess it is going to impact my business (depending on the game), but I can do it on the laptop while travelling), Since the Pixels movie is out a good moment to start :-) (I remember as a kid I created a paper based graphical 3D-score list, now wondering where it is, probably in NL). While the SHIFT838 newsletter is great, we assume that nobody is using the Shift 8-3-8 in MunchMan! Not sure if I am running 50 Hz here, or if there is a difference in speed between the real iron consoles ? (silver/black /4, /4A, beige /4A /4AQI) Emulators: * Note that Classic99 runs faster than real iron! The other alternatives we have are js99er.net, V9T9, MESS, TIW99/4 and a few others, let me try to do a comparison. BTW - I like that Air Defense screenshot of the book (I did not know that existed for TI-99/4A, coincidentally I setup the "Motorola AirDefense business" (WiFi Wireless intrusion prevention system business) for APAC in 2009-2012. Timezone here is: GMT+8 (Singapore) and GMT+7 (Thailand)
Opry99er
Thanks for your entry, sometimes!!!! For now, there will be no requirements on system... If you cheat, you're a complete tool for cheating on a retro game contest against hobbyists and kids. If anyone notices a measurable advantage to playing on one system vs. another, let me know. No emulator-allowed breaks, no save states. I'll add that to the top thread as well. Some games are decidedly NOT wrist busting Arcade thrillers... I am sure in those cases, it will not matter... For Munchman thOugh, let's put it on 1983 mode and play through. Edited August 12, 2015 by Opry99er
Opry99er
Karsten raises the bar with a GREAT score of 50k+!!!! That sets the standard a little higher... I look forward to beating your score soon.
Dexter
So Munchman it is, I'll play it on the real iron with F18A, so 60Hz.
globeron
Munch Man and Multitasking -- MMM (in case you have 2x people who want to play on the same system) If you start Classic99 - 2x times and you configure the (USB-Joysticks) different in each emulator, then you can play with 2x persons at the same time on the same PC! (this is really cool !), Play it on a large LCD-screen and with wireless joysticks you can sit at the couch.
Tursi
Emulators: * Note that Classic99 runs faster than real iron! I dunno... I've spent a LOT of time trying to prove this or not, and I can't say for certain. Remember that real iron varies by up to 10%, and that's if it's still in spec (the CPU clock is allowed to drift +/- 5%, and I have consoles at both ends of that range ). Can you give me a benchmark I can actually use to prove this, then I can fix it? Anyway, only managed half the score: Before the next winner happens, though, I'd like to propose that prizes don't have to be physical... not everyone can ship things out, nor should they have to.
globeron
With the "PS/2, PS/3, or Oker type of joysticks and the emulators it is hard to take the corners) (first I thought it is the wireless 2.4 GHz interference, but it is the same with directly connected USB -joysticks) but it is better with the keyboard (I used a wireless keyboard). Use the keys E,S,D,X based on advice of Vextrex Roli's mother (See Vectrex Roli 8.16 min onwards) 9.36 min. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SchoOrUGnp8 After the 20th screen, it starts to play and count from screen 01 again: Score: 72870

Can you give me a benchmark I can actually use to prove this, then I can fix it? It is for sure faster (but I need to find a way to show it in parallel between the emulator and the real iron and probably on the same LCD-screen? I am not too sure if that can impact the speed or also called "QoE - Quality of Experience"?) P.S. Also found something fun, when using the Joy2Key (see other post) and leave it on Joystick in the emulator, then it slows down all movements (like you mentioned), but then suddenly it goes fast forward (very fast, like in the movies "jumper" and the guy in "x men days of future past" who can move fast) I guess it is catching up with the keystrokes, I need to see if I can capture this somehow, it is hilarious seeing Munch Man going at this speed ! globeron
Opry99er --> have you invited the FaceBook TI99ers community already? Opry99er
Holy cow!!! Mzapf is a gamer!!! We had a new high score in the 70k+ range from globeron which shortly thereafter got spanked by a NEAR 100K high score!!! Sick!!!!!! I need to go get another joy adapter... I have been playing with arrow keys and it's just not the same... I think they're pretty cheap at local shops... Anyway, this contest is getting good... Who's gonna break 100K?
Opry99er
Tursi, thanks for playing!!! Please feel free to beat Michael's 96K score and post at any time. @globeron: I have not invited them. Do feel free to mention and link this thread over there... Maybe we can get some converts! @Tursi: Your suggestion is good. A prize could consist of something electronic as well... I will update the top thread once Al gives me authorization to edit this thread.
+save2600
My high so far using real hardware and a good old fashioned Atari CX-40 joystick. Playing just now, reminds me how much I hate the enemy patterns and the way some of them are animated. Way too damned jittery! lol
+mizapf
Animation being jittery? In Munch-Man? Never felt this way. Also, I always found the Hoonos pretty creative and funny (IIRC their name).
+save2600
Jittery, erratic, pulsating - whatever. The character graphic + quick animation + some of the color schemes are a bit hard on the eyes these days too. Getting old I guess!
