108 Stars
Interesting list. Phantasy Star IV, Shining Force, Streets of Rage 2 and Sonic 2 would be on my list too. Shinobi 3 maybe too, although I find Revenge of Shinobi much better still. Landstalker and Monster World IV would definitely be in my top 10. +save2600
No doubt the Genesis rocks! Lots of great games and memories playing BITD. Will have to give Sonic Spinball another look one of these days though as it was never a favorite. Kinda always hated it when games screwed around with the pinball formula too much. Devil's and Alien Crush were about as "weird" or fantasy like as I could tolerate. Flipnic for the PS2 just plain sucks IMO.

byonddrivn
Great video, thumb's up for including Columns. I was never a big fan of the Genesis but I respect it as a good system and own one. Love the RPG's, the Shining Force series, LandStalker, and even Sorcerer's Kingdom. Herzog Zwei is great 2 player fun as well.
Nutsy Doodleheimer
Excellent top ten list for the Genesis! You have a great selection and not the same game everyone puts down. It is one of my all time favorite gaming systems and growing up with back in the 90's. So glad you included Columns. Such an underrated game and Tetris was the choice by many for puzzle games. Subbed your channel! For my top ten list for the Genesis. 1. Sonic the Hedgehog 2 2. Streets of Rage 2 3. Road Rash 4. Earthworm Jim 2 5. Castlevania Bloodlines 6. Golden Axe 7. Super Hang-On 8. Truxton 9. Columns 10. Shinobi 3 Honorable Mentions: NHL '94 Earthworm Jim Toe Jam and Earl Sonic the Hedgehog Sonic the Hedgehog 3 Sonic and Knuckles Road Rash 2 Revenge of Shinobi Streets of Rage TMNT The Hyperstone Heist Comix Zone Outrun Golden Axe
byonddrivn
Is Comix Zone really that good of a game that I should add it to my wish list? I see it on a lot of top Genesis game lists but have never played it. What attributes make it such a high ranking game? It sounds like the difficulty level is pretty high. 108 Stars
It is a very nice brawler with an original twist. Definitely worth playing. The difficulty however is unfair. This is because the developers were told last minute the game was too easy and Sega feared people would rent it and play through it on weekend instead of buying. That late in development, the only way to boost the diffculty was to just make enemies stronger. The devs were not happy with that, bit that is how it is... I see it on a lot of top Genesis game lists but have never played it. What attributes make it such a high ranking game? It sounds like the difficulty level is pretty high. Yes, it is actually a fantastic and entertaining game. The music is like alternative rock band style but *gloriously* converted to the Genesis sound chip! I dare you not to smile at their version of the SEGA game-load screen. The difficulty at first seems too high - but once you find how to get past certain screens without dying or hurting yourself, it isn't impossible. For example you will find bottles of milk (restores your life bar), and you have an inventory of 3 items so you can store it there & use it when needed. Your pet rat helps out too so definitely let him out on each screen and see if he finds hidden stuff. Also, the fighting-game-engine is smart , the enemies will block your punches if you use the same moves all the time, so just mix it up and find some little combo's , to win quicker. Personally, I feel these are all pro's and not cons for the game. Easy games get boring quickly.
byonddrivn
Sounds good. My collection of Genesis games, not counting CD & 32X, is only at about 30 so I'm always looking for recommendations. I'll be giving Sonic 2 another look since I don't think I realized you could turn Knuckles off, he always screwed me up. Channels been subbed as well. I myself still need to play it - however I really feel like people just regurgitate it and throw it on best lists because, well, that's what you're supposed to do right? Whenever I hear people mention it on a top 10 list or "best sega games" really listen to what they're saying about it - are they coming from a place of emotion or fake robotic regurgitation - I'm sure the game is great though

BydoEmpire
Off the top of my head and in no particular order, these are the Genny games I played the most and enjoyed the most: Golden Axe Golden Axe 2 Revenge of Shinobi Mutant League Football Mutant League Hockey Sonic the Hedgehog Streets of Rage 2 Phantasy Star 2 Castle of Illusion (Mickey Mouse) Master of Monsters Tommy Lasorda baseball was probably the last video game baseball game I ever had... certainly the last one I ever enjoyed. That's a good pick.
byonddrivn
This post might be all over the place but some of it does pertain to this discussion. There was a Mutant League Hockey?!? I don't know why I didn't know this. It's not the best game but I love Mutant League Football! What a blast. My problem long ago with the Genny was that it was always known, in my circles, as the "sports" system. Since we usually played RPG's it just never got much notice. That being said, I'm not big on golf but love golf games and try to own one for each of my systems. Can anyone recommend a good Genny golf game? It looks like PGA Tour III gets some good reviews. I find it pretty amusing that there's hardly any sports titles talked about in this post considering my past beliefs. Other than the aforementioned Columns, Herzog Zwei, and Mutant League Football some of my other favorites (in no order) were: 1. Anything with the word Shining in it, including Shining Force CD. 2. Crue Ball (awesome soundtrack) 3. Vectorman 4. Chakan (wayyy too hard for me tho) 5. Zero Tolerance, even tho I don't like FPS this one was fun AND I just found a second copy yesterday at a thrift store so I broke down and ordered a link cable since I haven't had time to make my own. Titles that didn't make the cut & why: Sonic games - My memories of the first Sonic are "hit the spikes, watch the rings fly, hit the spikes, watch the rings fly, hit the spikes, watch the rings fly". - Tails always screwed me up on the second one. - I never played any other Sonic game after that cuz the first 2 annoyed me, I do recall playing Sonic Spinball once and liking that tho. I will revisit these soon and give them another chance. Phantasy Star games - The first one bored me, which is odd cuz I like Final Fantasy for the NES and Shining in the Darkness. I'll try to look at the Genny sequels. Toe Jam and Earl & the Shinobi series - just don't look like my kind of games but surfing ninjas, now I gotta try it. Give me Keio Flying Squadron, Dark Wizard, or Lunar on my Sega CD any day.

+Cafeman
My favorite 10 are probably these: (in no particular order) 10. MUSHA - it's simply a great and satisfying vertical shooter. I like vertical shooters more than horizontal ones. I've beaten it, and I love its "sequel" Robo Aleste CD too. 9. Thunderforce IV - it's too hard for me, but it is just astounding. Great horizontal shooter, with tons of sprites and even vertical scrolling space as you fly along. I've never beaten it. 8. Sonic The Hedgehog 1-2-3 and Knuckles (the series) - I rate them all equally. Can't pick one over the other. The first one is still special to me because without a speed roll, it takes more grippy controller maneuvering to get around the levels. Sonic 2 is really perfect, however without a save I usually get tired by the end of it. Sonic 3 is all-new with new graphical style and the new shields and bonus rounds and introduced Knuckles. Sonic & Knuckles is more of part 3 which is great, and combine them for something huge and epic. 7. Shinobi - I love them all, but I really dig the one with the dog for some reason. But they are all awesome platformers. I kept buying versions of Revenge of Shinobi until I found one with the original Spider-Man / Batman / Godzilla in it, not the changed sprites of later versions! 6. Super Monaco GP - after playing Pole Position for so many years, this blew me away back in '92 and I still dig it out and beat that annoying rival every winter. 5. Comix Zone - talked about this above. Great late-generation game. 4. Ecco the Dolphin - I always found this intriguing despite its cryptic puzzles and difficulty. I've beaten it several times. 3. Streets of Rage 2 - I love all 3 but part 2 is perfect. 2. Shining Force II - I just beat it last winter on a compilation! But I loved it back in the 90's as well. I only rented it back then so didn't see it all. I love the chess-like strategy. 1. Earthworm Jim. Dave Perry & co. knocked it outta the park. Tough too. I love this game. Beating it on Hard back in the day was a moment of pride. honorable mentions would include Columns, NHL Hockey '94, Madden series, Pitfall Mayan Adventure, Mickey Mania, and the excellent Flashback:Quest for Identity. EDIT - oops, I forgot the awesome Road Rash / Road Rash 2 !!!
chuckwalla
1) Sonic 1,2,3, Knuckles, & Spinball - love the whole series for the Genesis 2) MUSHA - greatest 16-bit shooter 3) Streets of Rage 2 - only fighting game I can get into 4) NHL '94 - best video game hockey ever 5) Madden '93 Championship Edition - classic 16-bit football with tons of Super Bowl teams to pit against each other 6) Rocket Knight Adventures - loved this game since I bought it in the '90's 7) Shining Force II - one of the few RPG's I ever got into Road Rash II - fun bike riding with a twist 9) Gunstar Heroes - short but fun with fast action with super cool graphic effects 10) Rolling Thunder 3 - great action game I return to over and over again Zombies Ate My Neighbors, Truxton, Dragon's Fury, Vectorman I & II, PGA Tour Golf III, and Shinobi 3 are top quality titles too that are played regularly. There was a Super Monaco GP for the Genesis? I know I have it for the Sega Master System. After Strategy/RPG's, racing games are my next favorite & I own none for the Genesis. Gonna have to look into that as well. Wishlist is growing.

After Strategy/RPG's, racing games are my next favorite & I own none for the Genesis. Gonna have to look into that as well. Wishlist is growing. There was actually TWO Super Monaco GPs for it. Both of them also on the SMS, though watered down. Very surprised by your Phantasy Star comment. I am a big JRPG fan and played through all the FF games, DQ and many more. I feel that PS on the SMS is castly superior to the 8-bit FFs actually. I'd say it is the best RPG of the generation even. I'd totally skip 2 and 3 though. 4 is a great game. Not much in common with 1, no 1st person dungeons.

I feel that PS on the SMS is castly superior to the 8-bit FFs actually. I'd say it is the best RPG of the generation even. Believe me it was probably as hard for me to type as it was for you to read. To be fair and honest, I didn't own a SMS when they came out but I do remember my cousin playing PS a little on his, I think he was pretty far in the game tho. I don't remember when I got my SMS, I think it was the late 90's but my issues with PS could have been a number of things. I've played at least 90% of the RPG's pre-5th generation (PS/N64/Saturn), including on handhelds, so I could have just been burned out on them for a bit or maybe I just wasn't digging the gameplay. The late 90's was a dark time for me and consoles cuz I had no interest in the PS1 or the Saturn and the N64 was a big let-down so I was playing a lot of PC games like Need For Speed, Warcraft, & Command & Conquer. Kinda hard to start PS at that point and, as much as I love my Coleco, sometimes I really need to be in the mood to play 3rd gen and older games other than my absolute favs. I do own it so after I run through PS4 I'll check it out again. I tossed GenPlusDroid on my phone and have a few hours in on PS4 now, just because it's outside my budget to buy ATM, not big on playing on emulators tho (they're ok in a pinch).
