What was the first system you programmed?

Old topic, but I so wanted the Big Trak when I was a kid! Never got it though. I had TOBOR, which was cool I guess, but not programmable.

 

In answer to the topic question, my first computer experience was on PDP11. We played Star Trek. I was blown away by it!

The first system I ever programmed was the Commodore 64. I developed a series of Text Adventures that were decent for the time. I never sold any of my projects, though. I always felt my work could be better, and this resulted in me rebuilding (or expanding) on titles that were technically finished.

 

I was quite young at the time (11 years old) and felt nobody would be interested.

Atari 800 basic. Bought at army px at ft. Brag in 1983. still have it, well it got zapped in a power blackout, up graded to a 65xe with 3 OS's builtin. one was a down grade to version a so older programs could run. the normal builtin i think version c and the other was one from OSS i think.

Aside from a programmable calculator (that I saw mentioned) my very first was the Commodore PET. We had one at the electronics tech school I attend. I sort of jumped ahead in the lesson plan. The PET was for a more advanced class. We were to learn the KIM first which was all machine code. But a classmate had some programming experience already. We asked the school owner if we could use the Commodore after class. He agreed.

 

Once we got to the KIM class (and later the PET segment) my classmate and I were acting as teacher assistants. We very well may have known those computers better than the instructor.

 

 

Once I started working I bought a PET. My ex cassmate and I were roomies. Later he bought a PET and we would have coding contests. We kept in touch for the longest time trading tips by mail There was no email then My first major game was breakoout for the PET.

I first learned on a Sol Terminal 20 when I was 8 years old.

Sinclair ZX81 (loaned machine while friend was on vacation), followed by Atari 800 and HP15C.

My dad was a very early adopter of the IBM PC when it came out in 1981. My sister and I used BASICA on there using good old CGA graphics. 

 

The next year I got my own Timex Sinclair 1000, and programming on that crappy little thing was much more fun than it sounds. 

 

Later, I got my own TRS-80 CoCo 2, and I got many years of fun out of that one.

First game I wrote was on an Ohio Scientific Challenger 1P
In winter, the cold air blowing upwards through the keyboard meant I had to wear mitts to avoid frostbite.

Probably an off-brand PC clone, running DOS. GW-Basic, simple stuff like this:

 

10 CLS

20 PRINT "Hello!"

30 PRINT "Today is" DATE

40 PRINT "It is" TIME "O'clock"

50 GOTO 10

Can't remember if it was the Atari 800 my dad bought for us (probably) or the IBM 1130 that my high school had for its computer class, which used FORTRAN and had 8K total?  Fun times back then.

QBasic on PC, then a TI-83+/84 calculator. Seems to be pretty in line with a lot of other people's experiences.

The first system I programmed was my Atari 800 in Basic. I had two neighbor friends, one had a TRS-80 and the other an Apple 2, and we were all interested in programming so we all worked together to write programs. We actually submitted two to Softside Magazine's 1K program column, although neither was accepted. After Basic I eventually moved to Action!.

 

I tried my hand at assembly but never got the hang of it. When I went to college I had a 6502 assembly programming class where we used the AIM65. I then got a job as a hardware technician at a company that manufactured data communications equipment a lot of which was based on the 6502, so even despite my struggles with it on my Atari 800, I eventually became very proficient in 6502 assembly. 

 

After the 800, I got an Atari ST and start using GFA Basic which I eventually used on the PC before selling my soul to Microsoft when I start with Visual Basic 1.0.

First would have been an Apple II.  Whether + or e model first I'm not certain.  AppleBASIC.  Followed quickly by LOGO.  Then we got a PC and the languages I used really exploded!
