TPA5
Just wondering what games you guys have played that you initially thought you wouldn't be a huge fan of, whether it be in a genre you don't usually play or simply something that didn't catch your attention, but ended up becoming a game you really enjoy. For me, Euro Truck Simulator 2 was one of those games that I never thought I would like. I've never been a huge simulator guy, and I thought "how fun could simply driving a semi-truck be, it's like having another job". But I've now put in well over 70 hours into the game, I'm shocked at how compelling it is. Every time I fire it up and play I have that "just one more delivery" mentality that keeps me up late into the night driving things around Europe. I never would have guessed a simulator game could grab me like that, but it did. What about you guys and gals? What games did you end up really enjoying (dare I say, loving?) that you would not have guessed you would?
cimerians
I have Euro Truck Sim 2 in my Steam library for a long time and never gave it a chance. Thanks for the heads up. Here's some that I thought I wouldn't like but ended up liking (a lot): Rocket League Fallout 3 Infamous Uncharted Grand Theft Auto Yakuza Metal Gear Solid Planescape Torment JRPG's I had little interest until I played Dragon Warrior NES sometime in the mid 90's (just before Final Fantasy 7). I thought at the time, they were light/kiddy versions of Ultima on PC which they kind of were. Culturally just different. Some old games I thought looked kind of dumb or had zero appeal but loved them when I played them: Qix (Arcade) Turtles (Arcade) Baseball NES Rush n' Attack NES NHL Hockey (Genesis) Circus Atari Pengo Wargames (CV) Leaderboard Golf (C64) MULE (C64) Actraiser on SNES looked like something I wouldn't like but also turned out great. I actually thought the strategy part would be awful and that was the best part of the game! Actraiser 2 was just bad.
Nutsy Doodleheimer
Earthworm Jim (Genesis) Wave Race (N64) The Smurfs (PS1) Flatout 2 (PS2) Pressure Cooker (2600) Gremlins (5200)
ZylonBane
Given that most people have a backlog a mile long of games they actually want to play, why would anyone waste their precious time on a game they think they won't like?

You're welcome I've been hearing a bunch about Rocket League from a couple friends of mine, I've been thinking about checking it out. I never liked JRPG's either until I played Tales of Symphonia on the Gamecube, that helped change my view on them. Given that most people have a backlog a mile long of games they actually want to play, why would anyone waste their precious time on a game they think they won't like? For the same reasons they waste their precious time sitting on a forum talking about games instead of playing them?
leods
Dark Souls. I saw some Review saying how incredibly hard and tactical it is. It looked clicnky and boring. Then a friend of mine commented on how damn hard the game is. And I was like. Yeah.. What's the Point of that? Then the game way on sale on XBL and I said, what the heck, for 7 bucks I'm willing to try. over 300 hours of gameplay later I think I can say I did enjoy it. Dark Souls 2 is trash though. It's just a ripoff. It's another game that was being developed by another Team and got the Dark Souls Name and lore slapped on to it because Namco said so. I can't think of another. The contrary happens all the time. I get a game because it seems to be good and it's just trash.

cimerians
I've been hearing a bunch about Rocket League from a couple friends of mine, I've been thinking about checking it out. It's crazy fun. I play it every day. I haven't done this ever for any video game even back in the Atari 2600 days. Then again I am part of a community and have added a few friends who play the game. I got it for "free" on PS4 from the monthly PS plus thing. I have it added to my wishlist on Steam and when it goes on sale I'll own it on there too. Its kind of like Tecmo Bowl or some other arcade game: quick, sporty, competitive match that only takes around 5 minutes of your time and you keep going back for more. Definitely worth a look and a game I had zero interest in....until I tried it. lol

StopDrop&Retro
The Little Mermaid on NES is surprisingly good. There's a train simulator game for the Bandai Wonderswan that I love to mess around in even when I'm not doing well and have no interest in trains. Dirt Jockey on PS1 is a pretty fun heavy equipment simulator game.
omegadot
Diablo 3 on PS3. Never cared for clicky RPGs but I loved it on PS3.

There's a great online community for TB at TecmoBowl.org that has guys who still hack the game for updated rosters and such. Anyway, Rocket League sounds like my kind of game. I'm not a huge online fan, but those quick 5 minute runs are right up my alley. I don't have to dedicate too much time to it, but if I want I can play 10 matches in a row if I have the time. I put it on my Steam wishlist!
Gamemoose
"Amazing Frog?" was a surprise as I'm not much into sandbox games. It's addicting to just play around and bounce my froggie all over the place. The kids love it too. Now that "Goat Simulator" is on the PS3, I might have to give that a go. Another type of game I thought I wouldn't get into are the "story teller" or "walking simulator". I LOVED "To the Moon"- I stayed up all night to beat it and cried at the end. Then the was "Dear Esther" that had me roped in and intrigued, trying to figure out what was up and getting my own take on it.
Flojomojo
Sports Talk Baseball on Sega Genesis. I just discovered this during some down time and enjoyed the simple, straightforward gameplay. It's not so old as to appear Jurassic like Atari baseball, but still charmingly archaic. I don't much care for sports games, but I liked this. MrMaddog
Open world games like the Saints Row series... Didn't care for the GTA games but after getting Saints Row 3 I was amazed how insane the gameplay was. Even doing the side actvities were fun and didn't feel like chores to do. The fourth game is even more crazy and plays a lot like Prototype, which my one friend introduced me to. Now do I leap over buildings or jack a car and listen to the radio stations? Unbeliever
When I first bought Diablo III for my Xbox 360, I had just come from the PC version and wasn't sure how well it was going to translate for me from mouse/keyboard to controller. Turns out, very well indeed and it's in my top game plays every evening and early morning before work. Great game, still very fun....probably due to all the monster slaying, which I apparently enjoy VERY much.
