Carol vs. The World 2015 Championship

Well, I've been in the Christmas spirit lately... Playing this game has helped. ;)

The theme music at startup was so well done that it stuck in my head all day, every day. I decided to code my own little version of 'Carol of the Bells' in TI Extended BASIC, with a little 'Ghosty' twist.

The camera I was using to film has a terrible built in camera, so hopefully you get the drift. ;) If anyone is interested, I LIST the code at the end of the video.... for all you coding nerds like me out there.

That's great! It sounds really good (and closer to the original than mine). :)

If you're interested, here's the MIDI I created with the arrangement I used in the game.

Awesome! Thanks for sharing. :)

MMMNNNN Carol time!!! (Also if you need a break, take a look at the HSC a final December blowout for the season with 5 games)

Hey, cparsley! Welcome back! I expect you to post some scores and break some egos around here. Specifically, we're looking for red scores this year! :o

Do you think you can do it? (I know you can!) ;)

Didn't do that great tonight..1,048

You missed the deadline for your entry to count towards your 12 Days Of Christmas Carol achievement!! :o

I'm giving you a break today because you merely missed it by a few seconds. However, keep an eye out on your time in the future! ;)

Finally broke 2,000

Yay! Congrats! 2K brings you up to the Top Elite Knight Helper Elf rank! :) Don't get too cozy there, the battle has just started... ;)

Slightly better.. 1,115attachicon.gif20151207_001357.jpg

Good job, nice progress! :)

hmm, I may just need to crack the seal of my Carol cart and join the fun... c'mon LTO Flash where are you when I need you!

WHAT??? :o :O :o :O You haven't opened and played your Christmas Carol game? Heresy!

Poor Carol must be all sad and lonely inside that box, unable to free her Christmas Spirit! Rip that baby open and play a round. You and Carol both deserve it. :)

Today I-Ranger!! :) Getting better with the intv controller.

Congrats, pimp! Unfortunately, you are still about 2K short from your previous score. I know you can get there. I thought you'd be practicing all year long!

And with that, our first week of the Carol vs. The World! Championship concludes. I've updated the official leaderboard and the ranks and stats on the first post. What will come during the next week when rookies hone their skills and veterans re-assert their potential.

Keep crackin'! :)

do it. We need more players. Seems to be a low number of players this year compared to last year.

We do need more players, but we're not doing too bad. 11 unique contestants so far, four of them brand new to the ranks, and over 100 unique entries among them. Not bad for a first week, but yes, we need more players!

JasonLikesINTV, cmart, cparsley, Gorfy, stupus, TrekMD, and the rest of the old gang -- where are you guys? :)

I've been a bit too busy to join the competition but I do plan to. :)

No worries. It's Christmas Time, many things are happing all around, so just take your time and enjoy the season with family and friends (and work, if thats your thing!). Play a round and have fun and post when you can. :)

Hi Intellivotion, nice first score! Will you have a chance to play on your console this season? :)

Nope, unfortunately. I will hold it in my hands again in the new year.

Anyway, I'll try to do my best with the emulator (but it's not the same...)

EDIT: and I hope I can score much more points, but not as many as grips03 (holy crap! he reached level 147!!!!!)

Very glad you liked it. I thought about going ahead and coding in the first board graphics of the game and have the music play behind the ghost moving around, but I ran out of time last night.

I believe this game COULD be successfully ported to the TI, but it would require the talents of a far more skilled assembly programmer than I. Anyway, I just got an Intellivision, so maybe before next year's contest, I'll be able to play Carol on the real hardware.

Thanks for the excitement and the nice tribute. However, I do not wish the game to be ported at this point, I'm reserving that right for the future, I hope you understand. :)

As for your music/graphic demo, let me know if you need help with it. I can provide sprite animation data and the maze layout map, and things like that.

 Nice score! Still half-way to last year's high score... you can do it! :)

Nice! Don't drink yellow snow scores!

Oh sure. I wasn't planning on attempting it. It is beyond my abilities anyway at this point. I am a competent BASIC/Extended BASIC programmer and a tinkerer/novice (at best) at assembly. This kind of precision and speed would require assembly or an extremely cleverly-written BASIC source for compilation, for which I haven't the patience. :)

I will enjoy the Intellivision version... it is plenty good enough for me.

Hey dz. i dont understand the ranking. I was top elite knight helper elf but then i got ranger and ended up in little ranking section with scalpel. How is he not top elite knight ranger elf and how are there no runner ups??

Hi pimp, sorry for the confusion. If you see below in the "Elite Knight Elves" section, you'll notice that both you and scalpel have not advanced past your previous high-scores. As per the new rules, veterans only qualify for the Top Elite Knight Elf spots if they pass their previous scores. That's Santa's way of encouraging highly skilled veterans to progress every year and aim for the toppity top prize! :)

Also, I found a bug in the leaderboard build script this morning that did not apply the veteran rules well, so perhaps you were placed as Elite Knight Helper Elf by mistake. Sorry about that.

As for the runners up, those are for non-veterans only, and as you can see, they are only missing on the highest ranks. I expect that to change as they progress through the month.

Does that make sense?

No worries, but keep in mind that I managed to make Christmas Carol and I am barely a competent Delphi/C programmer, so in my opinion, the important thing is not so much talent and skill but perseverance and passion. :)

got it!

By the way, if it is not clear, or if something looks "iffy" on the leaderboard, I encourage you and anybody to provide feedback. This contest is for the fans and for anybody to enjoy a bit of friendly competition, prizes, and some Christmas Spirit. The rules were changed to encourage new people to participate, but to still let the veterans show off their skills and get recognition (and prizes!).

If you guys have any suggestions or if there is something not clear on the leaderboard that could be changed, please let me know. :)

How about if I update the leaderboard to include the previous score of all veterans -- to celebrate their progress and to explain their position? Do you think that would be helpful?
