Carol vs. The World 2015 Championship

Alright! I've updated the official leaderboard, as well as the first post with the rankings and general stats. (Uh-oh! I see that Candy Cove is not the most deadliest place on Earth for Santa's elves anymore! :o)

I found a bug in the build script that applied the veteran rules wrong, which ended up biting Darrin9999 and sending him to the bottom of the list (sorry about that, bugs apparently like me quite a lot!).

I've fixed it, and now we have Darrin9999 filling up the Top Elite Knight Master Elf spot! CONGRATULATIONS Darrin9999!

Go check out your rankings, see how you're doing, and keep at it! The championship is heating up!

I'll let it slide now because it's fairly obvious, but next time try to catch the "PERFECT" message itself for it to count. :)

Hi-dee-ho, save2600! Welcome back!!! It's always nice to see the the same familiar faces! (though it's very thrilling to find new ones as well.) :)

I'm updating the leaderboard right now, so get your entries ready, or they will have to wait until tomorrow morning.

I forgot to post them so I did it again, for the practice makes perfect.

I'm going to join in. I've been having fun with this game since last year (but I didn't post scores) so I figured I'd actually post this year.

For the longest time I couldn't even clear the 2nd stage, but I've been playing it a good bit now and got a score that, while it isn't crazy, is good enough to start for me. I practiced 1-4 for a good while because I was able to clear 5 fairly quickly, but this time around I kept hitting the ghost which screwed me up on 5.

It's a great game DZ, and I think that I'll be throwing more and more time into it.

Score: 772, Stage 5/Round 10

Dz-Jay can you adjust my score to 16,955 :)

Whoops! Sorry about that. Fat fingers... :dunce: (Fixed!)

^ W_T_F grips? Just how in the hell are you so good at this game? I wanna see a gameplay video of you achieving these scores!

Btw: wanted to say thanks dZ for all your hard work in maintaining the leader board, holding the contest, etc. Great times! :)

No worries, it's my pleasure.

It's so great to see you here, Burrito! Welcome! Don't worry, we don't bite, and everybody's score is welcomed in this competition. Remember, the rules have been adapted to allow newcomers to shine as well as the good old veterans, so your chances are good to win a prize, if you practice.

I'll add the latest scores to the leaderboard tomorrow morning!

Yowza! Pimp is ready to roll over Darrin!!! :o :o

i need to go see krampus.

Carol, Santa, and the elves do not approve of Krampus. The only good Krampus is a... well, it's a Good Krampus.

Is there a happy ending?

A quick score before I run out of time.. Been a busy day, and I'd hate to miss my daily score submission.

That's the spirit, SiLic0ne! Keep at it, you've got 8 days left! :)

Dammit Pimp!

You better watch out!

You better not cry,

You better practice a lot,

I'm telling you why...

... Pimp-ma-ul is coming to kick your behind!!!

Anyway, I've updated the official leaderboard, the fist post, yadda-yadda-yadda. Don't forget to practice, play a nice round, and post your scores... and of course, HAVE FUN!!!

-dZ.

P.S. I've updated the official rules with a slight change to the "veteran" rule: you only qualify for the Elite Knight Elf status and prizes if you played the game in previous competitions and got 2,000 points or more (up from 1,000). I think this makes it even more fair since everything below 2,000 in the past was still within the "Novice" rank, and it may not be fair to pit them against the hard-core players.

Feedback is welcome, like always!!! :)

3 here... When these tracker posts go in this weekend, I believe it will shatter all previous records.

We missed the boat last week-- it was crazy!! With over 120 individual entries from all players, and dozens of hours of play in total. I'm sure it would have shattered all records then.

Now, it has slowed down considerably this week.

Oh, we're supposed to keep track of hours played too?? Ugh... almost ashamed to admit, as I just don't devote as much time as I'd like. Between the last 2 days though, I've probably got 2-1/2 hours logged in. Beat my score from yesterday and probably won't get back at it until next week:

As someone that has *never* paid attention to patterns in maze games, I do find Christmas Carol fairly tough. That said, I read up on the hints and tips AND have been trying to pay more attention to any enemy behavior/movement patterns. The "switch" of running over a snowflake is obvious of course, but trying to zig-zag (when you have the room) in order to ditch the snowman is difficult. His pattern might change, but mine doesn't and I end up smacking right into him anyway.

Only way I can figure some of these ridiculously hi-scores... must be something to just sitting around, maybe going between tunnels to *try* to avoid the snowman and letting the ghost replenish the gifts for you to collect. Problem with that strategy, is I run out of patience and want to complete the level and/or end up dying in the wake of my greed. There's times I really wish Carol had a flame thrower! :rolling:

You are not supposed to, you don't really have to. Although it would be cool if we beat the pants out of those Atari kids in that forum...

Wow, that's quite a bit!

You can play with patterns in Christmas Carol, but it's much too mechanical and maybe boring. What's more fun is figuring out the behaviour and playing to the strengths of Carol and to the weaknesses of your enemies. That's also how Billy Mitchell says he plays Pac-Man: no patterns, just paying attention to the ghost's behaviour, and having good reflexes.

The zig-zagging bit is to walk like on diagonal steps, which may cause the Snowman to turn the wrong way. It also puts some distance between you, because Carol can turn faster than the Snowman. You still won't be safe, but it can give you a respite, enough to catch your breath and go for a Snowflake.

Hmmm... there's something wrong with that. If the Ghost takes away your presents, he also takes your points away with them! :o Pay attention to your score and you'll notice that the points for each present returned is subtracted from the total. That means that to rack up the points, you'll have to complete lots and lots of levels, or earn quite a number of Perfect Bonuses. :)

I hope this helps.

Ack! Embarrassing I didn't notice the points being taken away. lol Good, well there's your built-in anti-cheat mechanism then. :)

Rarely read manuals and yes, have always played Pac-Man the same way. No patterns, just good reflexes and paying attention to the ghosts. Might explain why I suck at Jr. Pac-Man though. Never bothered to pay too close attention to either behaviors or patterns. Doesn't help that the frickin' maze scrolls and has ghosts popping out of "nowhere". :ponder:

(oh and the post above should have read 2-1/2 hours logged in between the two days. Not 21/2, which somebody might mistake as 21.5 hours). :rolling:

Now that I'm back in the mood to play some Intv instead of turning wrenches, I had a good game just now. 1,839 .. Not my highest score but at least saved Christmas and got some new perfects.. The usual 1-4 (which I didn't photograph) and on levels 11, 15, 17 and 18 :-)
