You are playing Porky trying to whack Tommy, Billy, Brian, Pee-Wee, Meat, and the other kids of the group. So you don't want to whack the pig, you are the pig trying to whack the Angel Beach kids You play as Piggy, as a hammer wielding character like Mario in Donkey Kong, chasing after the kids as they are running through your establishment (the maze) wreaking havoc.
