Coleco Chameleon .... hardware speculations?

Post Script; not that any of us needed it, but this is proof that nothing was ever running on an FPGA, there was no reason for the PCI card ("it might be there to capture stuff!"), etc. They did not have enough to show at this time.

It'd be hilarious if it weren't for all of the bruised egos, feelings and relationships in this thing's wake.

I wonder who gets to post this news on Facebook? It's not up there yet. I'm impressed that Engadget heard about this before our merry little band did.

It's nice that they didn't run out the (self-imposed) clock like the Kickstarter did.

Edit: Never mind, it's up, and it's good news. Time to swing my arms and dance!

You know, I really hope Coleco come in and publicly post their findings, clearly they didn't need the full week to come to a descision.

I read it as a concession that they did not in fact have a working prototype. Like, Mike told them "Listen; no point in waiting, we don't have anything." I don't think anyone looked at anything.

From the Coleco FB page just now

Reads to me like they tried to stall Coleco with "uh uh.. we um.. we need more time to get things as good as possible!" and Coleco were just like "yeah, no, screw this"

https://www.facebook.com/Colecovision-1616402778636687/

I guess the takeaway here is that we now, without a single doubt, that we have been absolutely spot on with our findings and theories, and while some may feel Mike was somewhat innocent and oblivious to the goings on, the way he likes to be front man and the only real centerpiece to PR, makes it virtually impossible for me to believe that he wasn't fully aware of the situation all along.

But alas, he has paid the price, even the projects of his that weren't faked are now mere crumbled shadows of their former self because everyone wants to abandon ship.

The Update that you were all anxiously awaiting: Retro VGS has decided that the work that they have created is not sufficient to demonstrate at this time. Consequently, we can no longer proceed with the project and the Chameleon project will be terminated. This separation is amicable. We wish them luck in the future. - We thank the gaming community for their continued support, input, vigilance and trust.

I noticed that the rate of posting in this thread really seemed to have taken off in the last month or so, so I pulled the html down and knocked together a quick Python script to take a look at the life of the two threads. The inverted y axis on the first image is intentional ;)

attachicon.giftotalposts.pngattachicon.gifpostsperday.pngattachicon.gifallposters.pngattachicon.giftopposters.pngattachicon.gifminutesbetweenposts.png

As of yesterday, 375 different users have made 11,407 posts. That's an average of 30 each but some people have made considerably more.

Times are all in UTC which sometimes credits the next day with posts when we had a busy evening here in North America.

If you want to do some analysis let me know and I can share the source data to save you scraping it (I made the download spread out over a few hours so I hope that's OK).

I can update charts in the future when the thread has grown more- no spam posting to try to get yourself on the charts though! If I get time next week maybe I'll analyse 'liked' posts ;)

Third most prolific poster. Do I get a bronze medal for that? :lolblue:

Retro VGS blocked themselves: https://www.facebook.com/RETROVGS/

(probably not technically, but I thought it was just desserts)

Ah the old "scrub everything and act like it didn't happen, maybe it'll go away" routine.

Any bets on how long till they pull down the twitter? : https://twitter.com/RETROVGS Within the hour is my guess.

Sites also been pulled - http://retrovgs.com/

Mike, it isn't going to work, to quote the Simpsons for a moment...

Dig UP, stupid!

I don't remember what I did, don't remember if it was intentional or I was trying to create a time machine or some shit, but I actually melted two kits at the same time LOL

Most I ever did was burn out the little light bulbs by hooking them up to the 9v.

Third place is second loser! Don't feel bad, you spammed as hard as you could. ;)

So, what's next for COLECO? If they can get their name on something that isn't crap, they'd be back in my good graces. They did the right thing by shutting down this crap, but they never should have let it go this far.

As for RetroVGS, I sure hope they have the good sense to stay down. It amuses me to think of what would happened to them if they hadn't attached themselves to this name. They'd probably still be making empty promises and stringing along the Kevin Bows of the world.

They may have taken their Facebook page down entirely or like you said, have locked it.

So I guess that was the other option if you read holding company's post literally... Retro (MK) has told them there is nothing to show... or.... the holding company is being a bit politically correct and has had enough to say bye bye.

For his own sake, I really hope Mike calls it quits with this and moves on or pays attention to something more productive. Nothing good is going to come out of announcing a continuation of the project, and I can't see how someone would attach their name to it.

Either mike closed the facebook page down or it go so many reports of being a scam that facebook closed it

Timings too spot on to be anything other than mike shutting it down in response to the announcement.

It was up about 20 minutes before, as i checked it out.

My question is how long before he tries again, with a whole new name for the system? Also if it does happen to come back around how much you wanna bet he dupes someone into being the front man.
