Good points, all around.

Thanks. I've had enough practice. This thing happens on every poll around here where the potential winner seems to be an unlikely title to some.

A 5-3-1 system can still be abused if a high percentage of people don't bother to award the lower points to a game. Its a farce if you get to the point of vetoing people because they have a low post count or are new to the scene in order to push voting in a particular direction.

Honestly, I do not care which game wins. Obviously I have my preference, but that's my own. I would respect and praise whichever game wins.

One thing is for sure, the level of polish of Intellivision games has been raised in the past few years, to the point that people expect good, re-playable, and feature rich games, with great visual presentation as a matter of course. This is a good thing. :)

so even though a game that should truly get third place gets no votes and the programmer/ publisher decides to no longer produce games? How about all the others? Are you okay with losing game programmers and publishers? Cause i sure as hell dont want to lose any? You may not care because you are partial to elektronite, but im sure others would agree with me. I agree with the 1-3-5 point system mentioned here.

I do not see where I said anything that would point to losing publishers.

Is that really an actual problem? Are we in danger of someone not making games in retaliation for not getting voted "Game Of The Year"? That would be a sad state of affairs.

I tend to agree with SoulBuster's comments above regarding the trend of everybody getting awarded a trophy for merely trying. In my opinion, the point of something like "Game Of The Year" is to celebrate excellency and point out a game from amongst its peers as the best, which is a great honour bestowed from the community, and therefore very special.

I would not expect it to be merely to stroke publisher's or programmer's egos in order to validate their efforts and increase their self-esteem. If you think that's important and necessary, then I encourage everyone to write fan mail to their favourite programmer or publisher. Let's reserve a "Game Of The Year" for truly special and exceptional cases.

exactly the point I was conveying.

LOL! Good one, but I didn't program Piggy Bank. Or so say the infamous "people familiar with the matter." I won't take their credit, for who knows what they would do to me!!! :o

Actually, I saw Rev at the library reading a book on Assembly Language For Dummies (or was it "... For Very Stupid People"?), so I bet you he programmed it! C'mon, Rev, let the cat out of your baggy pants!

I like this discussion. It really makes you think about how to get a read on a widely varied audience. Our only true commonality around here is that we all enjoy Intellivision (or we enjoy antagonizing Intellivision fans <wink>.)

But actually, my opinion is that a multi-round runoff vote for GOTY in this forum would produce a much more accurate representation of the community as a whole. We would probably have diminishing returns over the course of the round down, but still, the results would be pretty solid. The main reason I say that is because as of now, since each person can only vote for one game out of 8, the factor of not owning a game becomes extremely powerful. In a perfect world, we would all own every game or at least have a simple-to-use multicart and all own the ROM. Ha. But... if you own 4 of the games and you like them all, I am fairly sure that your decision will be within that group and the other 4 would not even be considered. That certainly represents my case. However, if those four were eliminated in the first couple rounds, you will be forced (if you kept voting) to pick from the others. Obviously, those later round votes will be influenced by other people's opinions you've read about or the videos of the game, history of the game, the box art, etc. However, arguably, all these other factors could be the truer definition of GOTY, moreso than just the two factors of if you own it and how much you like it's gameplay.

While I understand why some people are against people voting for multiple games in a single round of voting, I personally prefer that method.

That said, I view the voting as just fun. It doesn't matter if there is one round of single-game voting, one round of multi-game voting, or a 2nd round with 5-3-1 voting.
