How Many Copies Of The Same Game Do You Own?

The "How many 2600's do you own?" thread got me thinking about cartridges. I sometimes buy lots and end up with some duplicates. Are there any games that seem to follow you around? Are there any games that you always buy when you see them in the wild? I can't escape Combat. I have 5 copies. It's in every lot ever. I'll always pick up a copy of Atlantis when I see it around. It's hard to find a copy with the sliver on the label intact in my parts.

I try not to get any duplicates if I can, but sometimes I end up with dead carts and I need to get replacements. So far, I've got a dead Asteroids cart, a dead Donkey Kong cart (original Coleco shell), and a dead Ms. Pac Man cart (for the 7800, but still. It was from a brand new box, too!). I've managed to get working replacements for the former two, and I'm still looking for a replacement for the latter... Maybe that counts? :P

Despite these carts being, for all intents and purposes, "dead", I can't bring myself to trash or sell them. I'm a hoarder, I swear. It kinda sucks, because the Donkey Kong cart I have that doesn't work looks to be in pristine cosmetic condition, and the replacement I got that DOES work is in ruddy condition, and sporting a faded "not for resale" sticker with pink highlighter marker written over on the back -- probably used to be a pack-in with a Gemini.

I could certainly comment on my local store having duplicates instead of me, though. Entire boxes and trays, filled with the same game. Mostly Pac-Man, but I recall seeing plenty of common games like Combat, Asteroids, and Space Invaders there too.

I've built a lot of my collection from buying out other collectors, and on three occasions bought out the entire stock of going-out-of-business game stores. This has left me with many, many duplicates of common games across multiple systems. For the 2600, the worst offenders are:

Asteroids: 36

Combat: 35

Donkey Kong: 25

Pac-Man: 41

Space Invaders: 51

For other systems:

BASIC (Atari 400/800): 40

Donkey Kong Junior (Colecovision): 22

Pitfall (Commodore 64): 53

Pac-Man (5200): 20

Pole Position II (7800): 30

Keith Courage (TurboGrafx): 23

Mario Tennis (Virtual Boy): 20

Daytona USA (Saturn): 55

Gex (3DO): 18

Poker & Blackjack (Intellivision): 22

Overall, according to my notes, I've got over 8500 spares sitting around. It's a disease, I tell ya.

You should sell all of the 2600 games (except for Donkey Kong) to Albert for homebrews.

We all end up with temporary dupes when purchasing lots or whatever, but I generally only like to keep one of something in my collection with only a few exceptions (not exactly the same thing, but you get the idea):

Berzerk - I keep the original in its box and play the voice enhanced version I bought from the AA Store.

Medieval Mayhem and Warlords - although Warlords never gets played anymore. lol

Space Rocks and Asteroids - ditto. Guess I keep the originals of these around because they're so iconic.

Same thing with Outlaw and Gunfight. Come to think of it, Gunfight is so much better, that I ended up selling my original Outlaw. Didn't even want that in the collection anymore.

(Did that with Warring Worms and Surround come to think of it - Surround got the boot as well!)

Not including duplicates, lots, but mostly of Atari games. I have most official variants of most pre-1982 Atari games, including text label, # text, # text w/ color borders, picture, Sears text, Sears pic, and Atari Corp. release variants. (I don't count micro-variations of the same major label type.) Most of the ones I'm still missing are harder-to-find Sears pic labels (Gunslinger, Basketball) and Atari Corp. reissues (Fun With Numbers, Concentration, Golf, Basketball w/ alt. end label font, Blackjack, Hangman).

Space Invaders is one of the ones I have the most major variations of: text, picture, Sears text, Sears pic, silver, red, gray (Atari Corp.)

Street Racer is another one: # text, # text w/ color border, text-orange, text-yellow, picture, Sears text (Speedway II), Sears pic (Speedway II)

There are also a bunch of Activision, Coleco, M-Network/INTV Corp, Imagic, and other 3rd-party carts that I have multiple variations of, some major (Activision standard vs. Activision blue), some minor (Coleco Donkey Kongs with slightly different layouts), some even pirated! (CCE Bank Heist) :)
