batman pause with nes controller

Does batman require a 6 button controller. The 3 button does not pause no matter what I press. Nes controllers work I verified. I used a camerica freedom receiver and sega/atari cable to hook up to my genesis. And with a freedom connect (intercangable uses same receiver) and nes controller hooked up it works. Start or select do nothing. But on my 4 button recton the top right button starts the game. And on my original 2 button the right button starts the game. And on either when I press the bottom 2 buttons it pauses the game. And unpauses when I press a button. But does not pause with an official genesis controller. Perhaps its a 6 button game.

I tried as stated in another thread. The start button on stock genesis 3 button controller does not pause batman how weird. And I got a few more games from disc replay today and verified sthe start button does work to pause. Just not on batman for some reason.
