2016 Flashback speculation thread

We haven't worked on a unit like for several years, so that should tell you something. Some of those games may get worked into the main Genesis products at some point in the future, though.

I actually loved the Master System portable... I believe it was called something like the "Arcade Gamer Portable"... which, to be honest, is an absolutely horrible name for something filled with Sega Master System/Game Gear games. The originals weren't even the right color scheme (black and yellow??? seriously???). I can understand why something like that didn't sell well. I think it would be much better for the SMS/GG games to be integrated into the Sega Genesis style products, as the Master System didn't sell well here in the US. Consequently, there isn't a lot of mass market nostalgia for a Master System inspired device.

AtGames had them on their website till fairly recently (I purchased one of them as a spare for $20 + shipping a few months ago directly from the AtGames website). Now that AtGames has updated their website into the "Flashback Zone", they don't appear to be available any longer.

I was really excited about this when I first saw it in Target with a big red COLECO brand on it, heheh :lolblue:

You know what I need to try on the 2016 Genesis portable? This thing, for DOS, from 1995.

Game Gear 2 Mega Drive/Genesis Convertor is a tool that allows you to convert Game Gear ROMs into Megadrive/Genesis format ROMs playable on Genesis/MD emus.

How would that even work? Game Gear has more colors that mega drive. It's why there was never a game gear convertor for mega drive.

I dunno ...but a closer look at that utility makes me think it's just a file renamer so that emulators of the time that supported both systems could load either type of binary file. It likely won't work on the handheld.

Yes, there will be hardware changes next year. All current series will continue and there's potential for a new addition or two, i.e., platforms/IPs we haven't covered yet.

Turbografx Mini. I called it first!

That would be a heck of a plug and play if they loaded it with everything that they have the rights to (And if the package surrounding it was well done, of course). But I rather doubt it, especially considering the system's legacy outside of Japan.

Since it's not exactly very well known, one would think that if they're going into this business themselves, they'd start out with a NES based system or NES/SNES. They certainly have enough games that are fondly remembered that they could offer an impressive lineup, even without their license based games like the TMNT titles.

This would certainly be the riskier avenue to enter this segment.

Like a better-curated, more developed Retro-Bit Generations? That seems kinda fun to me, if the software lineup is good. Having SD card support for adding new stuff should be a standard feature, though.

I wish I could see the year-over-year sales statistics for the ATGames Atari Flashbacks from years 3 to 7. You'd think there would be diminishing returns from releasing essentially the same thing every single year.

;-) Not happening (at least with AtGames), but I'm surprised no one has pursued that in Japan, where the PC Engine was obviously extremely popular and well supported. There haven't even been any PC Engine compilations for newer consoles (that I'm aware of).

Surprisingly consistent. I'll admit it's an odd market. It will be interesting what happens in 2017 with the big refresh and additions, i.e., if that translates to improved sales over the norm.

I feel like I have access to all the TurboGrafx 16 (unfortunate American name for the console) that I want.

There are lots of PC Engine games in the Japanese PSN download store. Many of these came to North America and all work on PS3/PSP/Vita.

Same with Wii Virtual Console, including several CD-only releases.

There was an official TurboGrafx app for iOS, too. It featured a couple dozen games for a la carte purchase and offered one game to play for free every month. It was abandoned when compatibility broke due to iOS changes. It's still in my download list but doesn't work on anything from this decade. http://appshopper.com/games/turbografx-16-gamebox

That's so weird. Perhaps I'm fixated on the "Computer" part of VCS, when the proper way to look at these is as toys. I'm glad they keep on selling.

I just looked up their financials -- seems like their share prices have doubled since getting deeper into casino gaming. It would be cool to see Konami back in the game, especially with old Hudson properties. We should probably make a new thread about it in Classic or Modern Gaming, as it doesn't really belong here.

Funny, I Always think of Turbografx as Huge! But I mean that in the "Punk Rock" way of saying something is "Huge"..Like BITD we used to describe smaller bands that had huge followings, Quite different than Major Label bands......As in it's Huge in small circles...Those which I happen to frequent, I guess...It has a huge Underground cult following...

And Yeah, Whereas SEGA was a big star here in the States, in Japan it was all about PC Engine versus Famicom...

With proper marketing I'm sure a Turbografx or PC Engine Plug and Play would be Awesome! At least to some of us in the underground circles of Retro happy goodness and Funtimes...

It hardly sold worse than Coleco or Intellivision, and one could argue the games have tons more value. I'm skeptical they don't buther the audio or other emulation quirks though.

Konami isn't ATGames tho.

They don't even make video games anymore, and have nothing to lose by licensing their IP to anyone who wants to use it for something besides pachinko machines.

Metal Gear Survive, also they just released MGSV.
