ianoid
I haven't spent much time with the 8-bit version of the game. Who ported it and is it significantly different from the 2600 version?
jaybird3rd
It was programmed by David Comstock, but it isn't a port of the Atari 2600 version; it's a totally different game. Here is the page on Atarimania.

ianoid
And by Steve Englehart: http://www.steveenglehart.com/ http://www.steveenglehart.com/games/e.t.%20%28computer%29.html Thanks, great link. I almost want to sit down and check it out. And all the publicity about ET for 2600 is overblown. It wasn't a great game, didn't take long to finish. But the legend about it causing the games crash is silly.
The Usotsuki
One source says something, everyone else parrots it. Or maybe they just follow like lemmings. That's what happened with "Eee Tee sux". Sure, I didn't think it was much of a game, but "singlehandedly caused the crash" (or double-handedly with Pac-Man 26)...no. I think Mystique had more of a hand in causing the crash than Atari did.
eegad
Haven't played it in many years, but I recall the 8-bit ET being pretty decent. Kinda forgot about it...might have to sit down and check it out again over the weekend.
+FujiSkunk
I wrote a couple of bits about 8-bit E.T. Phone Home! here and here. The important bits have already been said, though: the 8-bit and 2600 releases are two different games, and the 8-bit title isn't bad, if not exactly memorable. Level42
Awesome video with a small part about the development of E.T. Phone Home and......they show the entire (cardboard) map Also lots of 800's (Centipede development !) and a lot of arcade development and factory stuff, great ! I never seriously played this version as far as I can remember. I completed the 2600 version a couple of times BITD though....
