Mord
I know nothing of professional game development, but unpaid labour is the norm in some other professions as well. In the US, at least it looks like some salaried workers are going to start to see overtime pay. Potentially anyway, assuming the Dept of Labor actually follows through this summer. This will only affect those making less than $50k though it seems. (So expect burnout to continue.)
omegadot
I would say in the case of internships it's a bit more understandable. In a former life I was looking at the law path and one thing that dissuaded me was the cost to just get through it. I'm not saying it's good, but I get someone not paying you to prove yourself and learn. I certainly invested a significant amount of time unpaid to build skills and prove my work, although not to the degree that earlier posts have mentioned. Once you are a regular full time employee I consider that unacceptable as a regular course of events. Sure, things go wrong. Big stuff comes up unexpectedly but if your entirely business model is reliant on that burnout cycle that's a problem.
MrMaddog
Crunch time might be "romantic" if you're still young & single and working for a very small close knit gaming company, but defintely not if you're over 30 and have a family while working for a mega-corp that only cares about making profit. Even going indie isn't ideal because you're exchanging mindless managers for vocal online haters as slave drivers. This makes me glad I never got into the game industry which was my life long dream. If I had, I would have already retire out of disgust and never touch any modern video game ever again... But then again, St. John did made a good point about snake people having lousy work ethics because they expect to have everything without doing any hard work. I like to see all those complaining SJWs on Twitter work in a factory, they wouldn't last a day.
