Replacing the cable (RCA to Aerial)

Hi Guys


I recently acquired a light sixer PAL here in Australia (and already submitted to the light sixer list)


I had some colour issues that this forum helped me with as a lurker (colour pot solved it) but i've been working on making the picture nicer. My Atari is unmodified and prefer to keep it that way. When opening the unit to fix the colour, i was quite surpirsed to see the cable going to the TV was a standard RCA that could be unplugged and plugged in freely. With the other end going directly to my TV antenna port, i was already considering a RF interference filter but thought, why mess with a dicky little filter, why not simply buy a better shielded cable instead.


Of course the thicker the cable, the better the shielding, the better the image, BUT the thicker cables can't turn corners very well so i need to select a cable that can still maneuver inside the case and out through the hole and still provide excellent RF protection.


Wondering if any has had some experience, and maybe i'm on the wrong track and an RF filter may do a better job? I just don't see how.

You could use a right angle adapter inside the console, and then you wouldn't have to make such a sharp bend at the rca connector. I'm not sure if your using a straight rca connection or some kind of rca to coaxial adapter/switch box, but there are adapters for both.

Well yeah, though i think the angle would still be an issue - just coming out a different way - but see i'm trying to avoid adaptors altogether and more interested in the cable that's shielded, thinking along the lines of, better to keep the house clean, rather than let it get dirty and try to clean it up on the fly.


Also, if it isn't as flexible, i figured i might be able to make the cable head out the other way, so swing around the front of the atari and around behind the power switch side and then behind that secondary board with the switches. Longer trip but should be less sharper turns.

So i think i'd be looking to replace the 58 with the 195. But i want the replacement the cable straight out, no adaptors.


As a side note, i think i found a youtube and the RCA end may be a little shorter than the regular RCA end, just to make sure this project is as hard as possible.


No mods, no adaptors, surely just a new higher quality (shielded) cable is possible.


If a cable place has them, and it was a little more "industrial" and didn't like corners, i guess the links you gave me may make that cable as they had a link to make your own.

So thank you for your reply, while i haven't exactly found exactly what i'm after, i think i'm now heading in the right direction, IThe cable designer even had a 400 rated cable called "ultra flex" if it flex's enough, and better shielded, id consider that.

Just noticed those cables you linked are 50 ohm impedance (https://telcoantennas.com.au/site/guide-antenna-cables-connectors), and I think you may want to use a 75 ohm impedance cable instead. 50 ohm is used for things that transmit and receive signals because of it's power handling characteristics, but for a device that just receives signals like a television 75 ohm works best. Cool - thanks for the extra info - i was seeking a local place here in Adelaide where i live and realised i have a mate who works at a cabling company (opps, forgettable i am) so we'll be catching up with him where i'll give him my current atari cable and see what he can make of it. He already asked me an Ohm question, so i guess he'll know what to do.
