VectorGamer
Too many home releases for a poll so just post your favorite. I have played the 2600, 5200, ColecoVision and two different versions on the C64 (Tengen and Parker). The game looks OK across all platforms but the big thing for me is the controls. The only home version I have played that has decent controls is the Atari 5200. On other systems the controls are awful. I tried playing with the Roller Controller on the ColecoVision and it didn't make a difference. So with that, my favorite home version is on the Atari 5200. Time's yours...
Chuck D. Head
Hehe! He posts a serious question and starts shatner / hello kitty nonsense all in one shot, very efficient. I am going to have to do some "research" before posting my opinion, which reminds me that I have never tried out the 32X version I picked up a while back. +wongojack
I think the most fun I've had with this game (besides the real cab) is playing it in MAME with a mouse. I also have a Golden Tee game that I hacked up to act like a mouse in MAME that makes this pretty fun too. I have enjoyed playing the 5200 version, but I find it is difficult to actually hit what I am shooting. The actual arcade game is so satisfying in terms of blasting everywhere and hitting things on your first (or second) shot. That Parker Bros C64 version gets the hit detection right which helps cover the fact that you have to use a digital joystick and the Tengen C64 version has speech in it which is really nice, but I never played that one as a kid. I have played the 2600 version enough to be impressed by it, but not enough to actually have any fun. I'd say for the home releases that I would give the edge to the 5200. The analog control makes this a much better experience on the 5200 than the other platforms. I also have the Gamecube game (Rogue Squadron something. . .) that includes this game, but I am ashamed to say that I've never played it. I wonder how it is with the Gamecube controller? mbd30
This is the kind of game that demands the original arcade cabinet. So much is lost in translation to home versions. The look of the cabinet, the booming sound and the feel of the original arcade controller are all a big part of the experience. If you are going to play it at home, it should be MAME, I guess.
BassGuitari
The controls screw them all up for me. I won't belabor that opinion here since I've made my point on that front in other threads. That said, none of them are really great for me. They're all games I really *want* to love but every time I play any of them, I come away with the same feeling: "This is a neat game that would be much more enjoyable if the controls weren't backwards." So I guess that leaves the eye candy factor, which I guess has to go to the Coleco version. It's too bad there never was a version for the Intellivision.

7800fan
Gamecube version is probably the best IMO if you can handle the controller. You want Rebel Strike preview disc (pre-order bonus back in the day) to get the Star Wars arcade game.
Nutsy Doodleheimer
I have only played Star Wars on the actual arcade cabinet/mame, 2600, 5200, and Colecovision versions. The 2600 port is absolutley impressive and mindblowing graphically but the controls are a bit sluggish and awkward when aiming with the crosshairs. The 5200 port is outstanding graphically but the hit/collision detection is poor. The Colecovision version is great graphically but a little slippery when it comes to the controls. But it's more playable for me out of the home consoles. I am with mbd30. I prefer playing this on an actual arcade cabinet/sitdown cockpit version or on mame. Nothing like the digitalized speech, awesome vector graphics, and the music/sound effects. And most importantly it's not frustrating to aim the crosshairs. AtariLeaf
I concur with others who have said that control is the main issue. I love the arcade game but have not found a home port I enjoy. I haven't played the 5200 port but perhaps this is an instance where non-centering sticks are preferable.

+Cafeman
I'm afraid none of them really hold up well anymore, except the emulated versions of the coin-op. I also have Gamecube Rebel Strike and have played SWA many times. Disco Darth!

+wongojack
I played Star Wars the Arcade Game within Star Wars: Rebel Strike for Gamecube tonight. Its fine, just an exact version of the arcade ROM (although I did notice some oddities with the speech). You have to fight with the auto centering Gamecube stick constantly which is particularly tough when navigating the Death Star Trench. Because you need some relatively fine variation on the height of your ship in the trench, an accidental snap back to the center is devastating. I guess if you are careful, you can do pretty well with it though. Just a bit slower centering speed would have been a good adjustment for this version. I think I would still rather just play in MAME if I am going to play an emulated version of the arcade game. It will probably be better with Empire Strikes back because the Asteroid Field (the equivalent to the "trench" stage) is basically a game of holding the stick to the edge of the screen anyway and you rarely let up for it to snap back. Perhaps I will try that later this week. I'm also one of "those people" who likes the ROTJ game too, so I may give that a shot. Although I find that the ROTJ arcade game doesn't really need analog controls and tends to emulate just fine with a digital joystick.
