So how come kids who didn't manage to play ET properly didn't buy hint books?

.pdf's are cool, but would still like to have the original book as a companion piece to the game sitting on a shelf. If it's just the hints you're after, always have RT's awesome tutorials for those that need 'em.

 

I see in this book, that there's a section you can cut out in order to make a cube of the "world" that might come in handy or just look cool sitting on a shelf too:
