Scooter83
I just picked up a sony msx 2. What are some must have games for the console and what are some good titles worth a look. I'm kinda itching to get outrun and see how this port stacks up

Austin
Yeah, arcade ports of more advanced games (for the time) like OutRun unfortunately aren't great on the MSX.Just about anything by Konami is worth looking into. Ports of early '80s arcade games are generally pretty good too.
carlsson
Browse around at Generation MSX for screenshots when it comes to games you're unsure about. They even have a top list to start from. When it comes to Out Run, it exists in two versions: Probe's version for MSX1 and upwards which is a spiced up ZX Spectrum game with nice sound but awful gameplay, and Pony Canyon's version for MSX2 and upwards which is a Master System port with worse sound but better gameplay. Anyway, all home versions in the first wave (*) with the possible exceptions of Genesis and PC Engine were rather crude, far from the arcade. (*) 1986-1991, systems that debuted in the mid-90s or later should be powerful enough to present a convincing game, and indeed newer systems often did Edited June 2, 2016 by carlsson
Scooter83
I think I'm getting antarctic adventure and some racing game with it. It's a bundled deal with a controller. I saw it did have a 3.5 drive. I assume some good disk based games also are put there not just cart based
artrag
Antartic adventure is a must have If you want to play original roms without collecting original cartridges, buy a flash rom of 512kB and burn in it the rom files. If the disk drive is dead, you can buy a sd or cf card reader, some of them includes a flash rom Look for manuel pazos'shop or for eric boez's shop on the web Edited June 2, 2016 by artrag
carlsson
Apart from loading MSX ROMs from disk (works for the smaller ones, not for those larger than RAM), you can also download the SG2MSX program that lets you load and play a number of SG-1000 ROMs. Some won't work, and audio can sometimes be funky, but it is a great way for a semi-authentic Sega experience. +nanochess
Bubble Bobble is a great arcade conversion, don't forget to play also Undeadline. There also some pretty cute RPG like Xak and SD-Snatcher.

About 90% of the classic roms works fine
artrag
But msx2 games are nicer Look for Feedback, a sort of 3d shooter Edited June 2, 2016 by artrag
carlsson
Nice, I had been musing about the possibility to play ColecoVision ROMs on MSX but never got to the point to actually research it. Does the Sony machine have MSX-DOS built-in or do you need a cartridge? My VG-8235 requires a cartridge to boot MSX-DOS and from there load other programs. The Usotsuki
Mission, plays a number of CV roms pretty well.
