cowdog360
Does anyone have the top shell for a Lynx I they'd like to sell? I put in a McWill screen for a friend, but the plastic screw mounts broke off when I took it apart. It seems these Lynx I's are pretty brittle in that area.. seen this a few times. OR any ideas for repair? I tried JB Plastic weld epoxy, no luck. Going to try JB plastic weld putty. Thanks!
sirlynxalot
I haven't taken apart a lynx 1 but would assume the sides have a tiny ridge that overlaps. Maybe using lock tight on that Ridge would keep it together. Not sure how much pressure if any there is pushing the two halves apart. If I'm understanding correctly the screw mounts completely broke rather than becoming stripped or cracking. If the latter maybe you could fill the hole for the screw with glue and then try to re thread the hole with the original screw. If the client is into an artistic mod, maybe you could drill tiny holes in each half of the plastic shell and stitch them together.
cowdog360
So neither the putty nor epoxy worked. Since on the right half the Lynx it uses the shorter screws, and only some of the mounts broke off, I went another route. I went to the hardware store and bought #4 oval head machine screws that are 1" in length. The factory machine screws are about 3/4" long with no pointy tip. The screw worked and grabbed the remainder of the mount without going through the case. Just a good FYI in case anyone runs into this problem. Like I said, it has happened a few times on the right hand half of the lynx.
+cubanismo
I ran into this. Got a Lynx I in pretty bad shape but functional off of eBay. Had some holes in the top of the case that didn't look standard, so I opened it up to look inside (Someone had clearly been mucking around in there), and when I put it back together the d-pad didn't work. I'd misaligned the rubber pads while re-assembling it. Messed about and did it wrong a few times again, messed up the other buttons the same way by trying to rush things, even accidentally had it flipped around and drove the long screws through the front of the case on accident (Oh, the agony! All just for the sake of curiosity too. Almost left this part out of the post it's so embarassing), and just when I finally thought I had it... *POP* and both the mounts snapped off on that side. Some frantic googling found this thread. One quick trip to the hardware store and I've got it fixed right up again, working d-pad and all. Thanks! Now I just need to figure out a good way to smooth off and patch up those new holes in the front of the case ? My plan was to fill them with a dab of epoxy, but I have to smooth it out first. I sanded off the burrs a bit where the screws busted through, but as I get close to the surface it starts to take off paint. The paint was already starting to flake off elsewhere, so I was going to have to touch that up anyway (Have my Testors 1163 and 1149 on the way already), but does anyone know if there is a better tool for taking off the remaining ridges? A chisel perhaps? Some tiny ball-shaped file?
