Is there much of a market for Nuon games? I came across a copy of Ballistic the other day and grabbed it as I never seen something like that before at retail. I was more curious just to see what it would look like than anything and of course no player for it.

Yes and no. No in that not many people are interested, but yes in that the thing sold so poorly, interest is just high enough and quantity is limited enough to where the games are getting stupid expensive. Either that or some of the Nuon collectards are hoarding a lot of it, which is something I also wouldn't doubt.

Brand new to the Nuon. I had never heard of it until I posted a pic of a free HD CRT TV on a CRT collector's facebook group last week (to which I'm also fairly new). In that picture, on top of the TV the guy had a Toshiba Nuon SD-2300, and someone responded back saying they had the same TV and the same Nuon. I was thinking, "What's a Nuon? Looks like a DVD player to me." I looked it up and learned a little about its history, and on a whim I messaged the guy back asking if he was selling. He said, "No, but you can have it for free." He ended up giving me the TV and the Nuon along with a bunch of DVDs (season 1 Flintstones, Brady Bunch, Scooby Doo, etc).

TL;DR...

I have a working system but no remote, controller, or games. Is there anything I can do to experience a little of what this thing has to offer on the cheap? Please reply back or PM me with suggestions?

I've got Ballistic, pretty sure it's the cheapest of those Nuon games if you check ebay you'll see what I mean.

Yep, this is the best way to go for a cheap, real release. It was a pack-in with the Samsung units which is why it's so common compared to other games.

I'm sure if you really wanted to you could get an easy $30 for that. :D

I like Ballistic. A simple game, I think it was on the Playstation 1 or 2, but a lot of fun.

No image on screen, can't eject disc! If I hit open just says opens and tray doesn't move.

Hmmm... which model did you say you have again?

I would think it was trying to read the disc, I would still get something on the screen. I can hear the disc spin when turning on, maybe it's not showing anything because it's failing at disc detect. Nothing on eBay US, shipping a M104/5 would coast more than another Nuon. According to the thread the DVD-S321 should be compatible, no full units on eBay but there is a laser replacement for $25. I guess to test if it's really just stuck on disc detect, I could open up the unit and manually remove the disc. In theory if no disc is is detected and tray will then open and close, that would make it more likely a laser replacement would work. Here in the states I could just try just try my luck buying random old samsung DVD players at thrift stores.

So I think the trick is, the DVD-S321 and M104 and 105 are compatible. What were their release years? Would other DVD players of Samsung close to their release dates also work?

I picked up a DVD-S222 which used the same laser DVD-S321. \

Unfortunately the laser has one additional pin on the flex cable making it not compatible.

Can you take pictures of the cable and connector and what happens when you connect them?

With the Playstation Classics system you have the ability now to load other images and games. Here are two games me and friend tried out being Tempest 3X (essentially Tempest 2000)

And Iron Solider 3

From here add Ballistic, Rascal Racers for Merlin Racing, Tetris, and I believe Space Invaders XL and you'd have most of the Nuon library. :D (Not including the homebrews of course.) Naturally I think Nuon did most of these better, but would not be a bad way to have a more portable Nuon-like experience. :D

Looks like my 501 bite the dust. The disk would not eject and no video out icon_sad.gif, SAD!

found the service manual here: https://elektrotanya.com/samsung_dvd-n501_sm.pdf/download.html

I had the same issue and appears to be the fate of many N501 systems. Maybe with the service manual I can find a laser that is actually compatible. You can eject the disc by remove the drive, pushing the tab down on the under side of the face and manually turn the gear.

Per the service manual it is a H211 AH97-00708A ASSY-PICK-UP;-,SOH-DM2,ASSY-PICK-UP

based on samsung parts list this laser was used in the fallowing models:
DVDM101, DVDM201, DVDM301, DVDN501, DVDP401, DVDP701, DVDV1000, DVDV1000D, DVR4500D, DVR4550
Now I know what to look for at a thift store can we can potentially save some nuons from an early grave

In my case, I don't think it's the LASER. The disk is recognized and it is spinning. When the tray is halfway out, it will pull the tray in and tries to read the disk.

There are few things that work, Remote control to turn ON the DVD, the Power button and Open/Close, but the Open/Close button only turns ON the system, then nothing.

In my Nuon there is no picture. Per diagram, video comes out of few chips, NIC1 to VIC1 to Video Out. NIC1 is the Nuon chip, VIC1 is Video Encoder.

I looked at the manual, by looking at the block diagram it looks like the Main chip is bad. If the LASER was bad, I would have at least a Video out with a Samsung logo.

I get not picture out eithern but I get status messages which implies the disc logic must be to some degree working. I'll get a new laser in there and see what happens next. There might be some tied to the drive and video output.

So it looks like I have 3 Nuon Yak Spinner controller boards from Lee Olivares coming in about a week. I plan on modding an Xbox Duke controller and adding a rotary. Thinking about documenting the entire process on video, with a final video presentation as a follow up to my eJagFest 2013 presentation.

Its been quite a marathon and it seems like the finish line is in sight.
