REDMOND, Wash., July 14, 2016 – If you see a Nintendo Entertainment System on store shelves this holiday shopping season, you haven’t entered a time machine. (Unless everyone around you is wearing acid-washed jeans and neon leg warmers. If that’s the case, you may have unknowingly walked through a rift in the space-time continuum.) The most likely scenario is you are setting eyes on the Nintendo Entertainment System: NES Classic Edition, launching in stores on Nov. 11 at a suggested retail price of $59.99. That’s right: The NES is back! But this isn’t the same NES that you fondly remember. This new nostalgia-fueled system is a near-identical, mini replica of Nintendo’s original home console and plugs directly into your high-definition TV using an included HDMI cable. The console comes complete with 30 NES games built in, including beloved classics like Super Mario Bros., The Legend of Zelda, Metroid, Donkey Kong, PAC-MAN, and Kirby’s Adventure.

“We wanted to give fans of all ages the opportunity to revisit Nintendo’s original system and rediscover why they fell in love with Nintendo in the first place,” said Nintendo of America President and COO Reggie Fils-Aime. “The Nintendo Entertainment System: NES Classic Edition is ideal for anyone who remembers playing the NES, or who wants to pass on those nostalgic memories to the next generation of gamers.”

The system comes packaged with an HDMI cable, an AC adapter and one NES Classic Controller, which is patterned after the iconic design of the original NES controller. But you really just want to know the full list of 30 games, right? Feast your eyes on the fantastic collection of NES classics included with each and every system:

Balloon Fight™
BUBBLE BOBBLE
Castlevania™
Castlevania II: Simon’s Quest™
Donkey Kong™
Donkey Kong Jr. ™
DOUBLE DRAGON II: THE REVENGE
Dr. Mario™
Excitebike™
FINAL FANTASY®
Galaga™
GHOSTS’N GOBLINS®
GRADIUS™
Ice Climber™
Kid Icarus™
Kirby’s Adventure™
Mario Bros. ™
MEGA MAN® 2
Metroid™
NINJA GAIDEN
PAC-MAN™
Punch-Out!! ™ Featuring Mr. Dream
StarTropics™
SUPER C™
Super Mario Bros.™
Super Mario Bros. ™ 2
Super Mario Bros. ™ 3
TECMO BOWL
The Legend of Zelda™
Zelda II: The Adventure of Link™

There’s a little something for everyone: a nice mix of timeless favorites, cult classics and maybe even some games that you never got around to playing. Each is sure to bring back memories and produce plenty of new ones. You can even enjoy playing several of these games with two players by attaching a second NES Classic Controller, which will be sold separately at a suggested retail price of $9.99. A Classic Controller or Classic Controller Pro can also be used (each sold separately).

When connected to a Wii Remote controller, the NES Classic Controller can also be used to play Virtual Console NES games on a Wii U or Wii system. Playing these retro games using a retro controller makes the experience that much more authentic. And if you ever need to step away from the NES Classic Edition in the middle of a tough level (or take a break to call one of Nintendo’s helpful Game Counselors*), don’t worry about losing any hard-earned progress. Each game has multiple suspend points, so you can start where you left off at a later time, no passwords needed.

What’s old is new again with the Nintendo Entertainment System: NES Classic Edition. Relive past glories. Finish off that boss you never beat. Save the galaxy and rescue the princess!

*Please only call if you have indeed entered a time machine. The Game Counselor program no longer exists in 2016.

It's about time that Nintendo enters this market. Hopefully a Super Nintendo Classic Mini follows in 2017. :)

I don't believe that we know anything more than what's in the press release.

Not only is this neat, but I love that this controller can also be used on your Wii and Wii U and that it will only cost $10 to purchase separately. Now if we'd just get a Super Nintendo sequel next year with the same sort of functionality, nobody will ever have to pay high prices again for this old Club Nintendo exclusive for the Wii that North America missed out on.

Just imagine the excitement though if this upcoming plug and play had a NES cartridge slot...

I like it.. and will buy.

Although I'm curious what Donkey Kong is going on there. My bet is it will be the minimal original NES version, missing one level, missing animations, cut scenes, tricks, etc. Because releasing inferior NES donkey kong dozens of times is the Nintendo way! :)

It has save states. This is emulation based.

And I can't see a $60 plug and play having WiFi, but I wonder if there's a chance that the USB connection can allow you to hook it up to a PC and access a digital storefront to add content? It's confirmed to have a USB port and at least in Europe, that's how it's intended to be powered out of the box with the AC adapter sold separately (Unlike in North America where we'll be getting a full fledged AC adapter).

Sadly, I bet you're right.

I'm personally puzzled why no Contra is here or on the Virtual Console. Yet it's on Contra IV on the DS in NES form. I wonder what's keeping that iconic NES release away while Super C continually appears?

Wonder if you'll be able to add more games or is it totally closed?

If it has a USB port, as it's rumored to, then it's not totally IMpossible... but given Nintendo's known attitude toward such things, I would bet heavily against it.

Then again, if you told me last night this would be announced at all, I'd have bet heavily against THAT, and would owe someone a cheeseburger this morning.

USB port isn't just a rumor.

The Nintendo Classic Mini: Nintendo Entertainment System comes packaged with an HDMI cable, a USB cable for powering the system*, and one Nintendo Classic Mini: NES Controller.

So this confirms its presence. What remains to be seen is what, if any alternate functionality it may have besides serving as the system's power port. Chances are it's power only, but you never know.

Would have been better if they made the controllers wireless.

I disagree since that would break Wii/Wii U compatibility.

Not only that, but at this price point, it likely would also mean IR. I can't imagine anyone giving up a nice wired controller for something that needs to have line of sight maintained just to work.

Are there Wii Classic Controller extension cables? Some of these controller cables are on the short side like my Hori arcade stick since they were designed to be tethered to a portable Wiimote. An extension cable would come in handy for this system now that they have to physically reach an actual console connected to a television.

Definitely totally closed. I added my thoughts here: http://armchairarcade.com/perspectives/2016/07/14/nintendo-announces-classic-mini-nes-heres-brilliant/

In short, I think it's a brilliant way to gain additional goodwill and momentum leading into the launch of the NX in March, particularly since there will likely be few sales on the Wii U side and limited excitement on the 3DS side during the holidays.

While I wouldn't expect this system to be upgradeable in terms of adding new games, your article above doesn't address the issue. Do you know this for a fact?

Thanks,

Licensing issues with Capcom?

The games might ne NEs only, but they are still property of Capcom. And CApcom beign in cahoots now, they might have wanted too much money for Nintendo's tastes, so they picked up the msot iconing Megaman game.

I wonder if Japan will get a Famicom Mini?

It might have something to do with protecting the still fairly recent Mega Man Legacy Collection. Capcom might only want a taste of the franchise here.

If the 1st party flagships like all three Super Mario Brothers releases, both Zelda's, and Metroid weren't already here, I'd say that they're leaving it open for a follow-up with more Mega Man, Castlevania III, Contra, Bionic Commando, etc.

But 1st party pickings would be somewhat slim for a follow-up and largely consist of 2nd tier releases at best, like Donkey Kong 3.
