Question on wiring 7800 stick with two buttons

Hopefully a quick and easy question. I've been staring at schematics and I'm embarrassed to say I'm not entirely sure so... :ponder:

I know how to wire the joystick, my question concerns the left and right buttons.

Does pin 6 connect to the NO connector on both the right and left button?

Does pin 9 connect to the ground connector on the left button? (I understand another wire with a resistor is required to connect this wire to pin 8 also)

Does pin 5 connect to the ground connector on the right button? (I understand another wire with a resistor is required to connect this wire to pin 8 also)

I've attached a primitive photo of the button switch so you can see (for sure) which connector I'm referring to as ground and NO.

Thanks!

Also there's no "ground" pin on a switch: there's a NO (normally open), a NC (normally close) and a COMMON pin. If one of these is ground depends on the circuit the swicth is connected to and, in the case of the 7800 joystick buttons, none of the pins is connected to ground.
As CMR wrote, you need the NO and COMMON pins, and it makes no difference in what order you connect them. (it does only matter in applications that use all three pins of the switch, which is not the case here)

NEVERMIND! I'm a dolt. The issue turned out to be a bad cherry switch! Who would have thought? sheesh.

Thanks for the info! I've wired up the joystick and have an odd issue. It works fine on the 2600. On the 7800 only the left button responds. Here is the odd part...

To test both buttons I'm using Scrapyard dog on the 7800. In this game the left button jumps and the right button throws. So I can jump when I hit the left button, but the right button will not throw. The right button does not respond at all. In trying to narrow down the problem I took all wires from the left button and swapped them with the right button. Now when I hit the left button the sprite throws and the right button does nothing.

I've attached a (terrible, sorry) diagram of how I have the buttons wired. Any ideas?

Thanks in advance for your help!!
