Intellivision Homebrew Roms?

Is there a list of all the free for download Intellivision homebrew roms somewhere?

Also, is there a version of World Series Championship Baseball that works on the Cuttle Cart 3? I think it uses extra memory so the answer is no, but I thought I'd check if someone has hacked it to work or something.

1. I suggest getting an LTO Flash. ...or later the Hive when available. Its soooo easy to use.

True, but I already have a CC3. Sure it takes a little more tinkering to get it to work, but it does work. I don't see the need to spend money on something that does the same thing as something I already own.

Good point. I just couldn't ever seem to figure out CC3. LTO is basically drag and drop.

Hope you get it working.

The Cuttle Cart 3 does emulate cartridge ram so a game like USCF chess should work. World Series MLB uses a type of bank switching that the Cuttle Cart 3 doesn't support. Maybe the bank switching type in the game can be modified? One of the experts would have to comment. You can sell your Cuttle Cart 3, buy an LTO Flash and maybe have money leftover.

That's right, I knew there was something special about WSCB.

Are there any differences in functionality between the two flash carts?

CC3 uses an SD card. As mentioned, CC3 doesn't support the form of bankswitching used by World Series Major League Baseball.

LTO Flash! uses onboard flash for game storage, and connects to your Mac/Windows machine via USB. It *WILL* work with World Series Major League Baseball - provided you've got the full ROM. Lots of sites only have a partial dump of that ROM.

LTO Flash! also has a few new features:

  • Supports JLP Flash storage - so new games that are written using JLP Flash save state are supported. Save state *per ROM* is supported.

(I believe JLP Flash is supported in IntyBASIC now, too, so it's easier to write new games that use it. Lost Caves of Kroz and other games use it already, though not sure about availability of those ROMs.)

  • Fixes Intellivision II lockout for games like Coleco's Donkey Kong, Carnival, Venture, etc. and Word Fun - i.e. you can play these on Intellivision II even though they were not compatible
  • Supports playing games that are incompatible w/ ECS even when ECS is plugged in (e.g. Pac-Man)
  • Support for the JLP accelerator features
  • UI Software is (Hopefully!) easier to use than CC3 menu editor

The only thing I'll add is that World Championship Baseball is a completely different game from World Series Major League Baseball. World Championship Baseball is the one that doesn't need the ECS or Intellivoice. It will play on the CC3 unmodified.

World Series Major League Baseball is the one that uses the ECS and Intellivoice. It has an additional paged ROM segment with voice data. Most ROM dumps out there are missing this extra data. If you try to play the limited ROM on a real system, eventually the voice commentary will crash, although usually the game itself keeps playing. The CC3 does not support the ROM paging technique WSMLB uses. LTO Flash! does, though.

Pac-man doesn't work with the ECS? I never knew that.

Pac-Man has ROM at location $7000, which is the location where the ECS EXEC resides. LTO Flash! disables this ROM before launching Pac-Man (or other games marked incompatible with ECS), thus fixing the incompatibility.

Interestingly, Carl's Ms. Pac-Man home brew is also incompatible with the ECS, but in a different way. LTO Flash! is able to work around that incompatibility. Specifically, Ms. Pac-Man relies on GRAM having writable aliases at $7800, $B800 and $F800; however, the ECS specifically prevents these aliases from working.

It might be helpful if people mentioned if their ROMs are free to reproduce as well. Making it clear here would mean more eyes on alert for scammers.

FWIW, Space Patrol Full Edition is available under the Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial-NoDerivatives license. I made sure to include a LICENSE.txt with the ROM, and I added a [var] to the .CFG file with this info as well. I strongly encourage other ROM authors to do the same.

Space Patrol: Teaser Edition is available under the GPLv2+, and has full source code with it.

If you want to release a ROM with no restrictions, the Creative Commons NoRestrictions license (aka CC CC0) is probably the best way to go. "Public Domain" itself isn't a license—as the lawyers at work have explained to me in depth—but CC CC0 is essentially what people think of when they think "Public Domain." Even Creative Commons calls it that.

As somebody who has seen their own free game ROMs pirated on cartridge, CD and included on emulation CDs/DVDs it really doesn't matter what license you put with your game. Anything from "free for personal use" to a locked down release is just completely ignored. Even if the game puts up its own screen while it runs, it will still be pirated in one form or another. At the end of the day, pirates really don't care. All they want to do is make money off your back.

True, but for the people [and businesses] that do care, the license tells them what they can or can't do.

Edit: And without a license, legitimate businesses won't use your work, but illegitimate ones will.

Indeed.

For example, folks have talked about getting homebrews onto the various Flashback systems. I think that's great! The license I've chosen for Space Patrol's free download doesn't permit that, but I'm quite open to releasing a version for that purpose as well. All they need to do is contact me, and we can go from there. If nothing else, it gets me involved in the quality control process, which is arguably the most important bit.

As far as cartridge releases go, all the official cartridge releases are serial numbered, so folks know what they're getting. :)

Given that the game is a clone of Moon Patrol, the likelihood of that happening is slim to none in my opinion. Any company wanting to license it would not want to tangle with the original IP owners.

So, I guess there is no list of free to download homebrews?

I was never a fan of piracy for currently available content at all, but it really hurts when you see something you created be stolen. Or some asshole hentai artist selling art of YOUR characters without kicking money up to you. Those who claim "piracy never hurt anyone" would change their tune if they saw something of theirs was pirated 18 thousand times and only one sale came out of all that piracy.

I don't disagree but some people incorrectly assume that if it wasn't for piracy they would have 18000 additional sales. Also it can be argued that in some cases, some developers benefited from their products being pirated. It has happened that piracy created a large user base with people becoming dependent on their software.

And for every one person that has happened to, there are hundreds of other folks like me who can;t help but think that MAYBE a few hundred sales might have happened if it weren't so easy to steal. Who know that 18 THOUSAND people to date have stolen your work, and only one came clean. For all the rhetoric pirates talk about how "you weren't getting that sale anyway" and "it's free advertising", all I can see it in terms of is that 17,999 people took my work like they were entitled to have it simply because it exists. Specious arguments and theoretical situations mean nothing to me: MY work was stolen, and for what pirates like to claim is a victim-less activity, I sure feel like I've been victimized.

Especially when my work shows up on a "2000 Ebooks CD!" that people are charging others for. You know, like Groovy Bee's issue, only with games instead of literature.

The version of Minehunter linked there doesn't work for me in jzintv on the Ultimate Intellivision Flashback. I don't get any errors; it just tries to load then goes back to the Emulation Station list of games. I tried both with and without the included .CFG file.
