In depth look at MEXICAN INTELLIVISION VARIATIONS

Not much information or pictures is around for the Intellivision games that were released in Mexico. I have acquired some with the help of a good friend! They are some differences in packaging versus the U.S. releases.

  1. Spanish manual, and some games have spanish name
  2. Spanish guarentee insert (some have)
  3. Sticker on front bottom of box (some have)
  4. Cartridges have 'M' stamped into them. (9 of the 10 shown have M stamped on cartridge)

Other than that, the box, cart sticker, and english manual are the same.

A few other pics are located here from Intellivisioner. http://atariage.com/forums/topic/192817-spanish-donkey-kong-box/

Always wondered how much there was in this arena. Cool stuff! You need to send them to me for proper documentation, scanning, etc.! :D

The last few years Ive seen a bunch on Mercado Livre. A large portion of the Mattel releases for sure. Even Ive seen Donkey Kong.

Time to add a section on your site!

Found this in a forum about the distributor:

The Mexican toy industry was very competitive in the 70's and produced good quality items, largely due to protectionist laws for the Mexican toy that made any foreign toy expensive. By the 1980s, international companies such as Mattel invariably used Mexican toy makers to introduce their products through licenses, something that Mattel had started in the mid-1970s. It would take 15 years to introduce her Barbie and compete with the Mexican version (Miss Lili Ledy). For this Mattel first associated with CIPSA and in the 80's would do with Aurimat, with whom he was finally able to displace the Mexican version. With the globalization of the early 90's, Mattel was finally able to bring his toys produced in other countries like Taiwan (later in China) and obviously got rid of Aurimat.

Funny. We got Intellivision in Puerto Rico in the early 80s, but it was all in English; just the regular stuff you got in the States. To me, seeing these things translated into proper Spanish seems strange and a bit funny. :)

Got some more Mexican variations for USCF Chess, Frog Bog, and Burgertime.

I bite the bullet because these are seldom available and typically not in so good quality.

So ... how come there is an "Estanque de ranas" and a "USCF Ajedrez," but not a "Tiempo de Hamburguesa" or "Defensor"? ?

UPDATE:  Ooops!  Just noticed the hamburguesa there ... :dunce:

It only happened to have received Defender at the same time for my collection, but I don't think Mexican variations exists for Atarisoft.
