Pokey Questions

Hey all,

Relatively new to the 7800 scene. Love the homebrew games.

I've seen a lot said about the Pokey chip and its importance to sound on these newer games. However, as far as I've seen I don't believe the chip is included with the games that come from the AtariAge Store. If that is the case, can you just solder the chip in later from those releases or are there separate PCBs?

None of the games currently sold in the AtariAge Store are using a board where you could add a POKEY chip. I will be adding two new games that require the POKEY:

- Super Circus AtariAge

- Bentley Bear's Crystal Quest

These games require a POKEY chip for audio.

I also plan on adding POKEY versions of Beef Drop and Pac-Man Collection to the store. Additionally, once Froggie enters the store, it will have a POKEY version as an option. These three games you will only be able to purchase in a POKEY flavor if you first send me one or more POKEY chips or Ballblazer carts. I simply do not have enough POKEY chips to make a large number of POKEY games.

Once I exhaust my supply of POKEY chips, Super Circus AtariAge and Bentley Bear will also require you to send in POKEYs or Ballblazers in order to receive a copy of the game.

Well cat's out of the bag now. I picked up a sealed Ball Blazer in 2014 for $7.95 at atari2600.com, and a loose copy for $1.95 at GameXChange. The loose copy had label damage and became a donor for the Concerto. The minty CIB copy I'm not butchering. It appears the supply of cheap Ball Blazers in the wild has dried up, funny however sealed copies are currently worth hardly more than loose. Expect it to go up dramatically untill Hokey launches...

There also appears to be a "red label" variant that some asshats want to charge a lot more for on eBay. In fact most copies on eBay are the overpriced red label edition. Not sure why...

That's funny as I've always felt that the red label one sticks out like a sore thumb in a 7800 collection. I've gotten rid of them before in favor of the silver ones.

I just picked up a Red and Silver from a guy. The problem is the red label one the cart is all busted up. :( So I guess it will just have to be sacrificed for the POKEY to get a Pac-Man Collection Pokey edition, Or Beef Drop Pokey or maybe Froggie so many Pokey home brews so few POKEY chips.

Then revive it!

I also have a working one, thanks to Dauber.

The one that doesn't work was fouond in the basement of my dad's house after he moved in. There was a a working 2600 adapter with it. Since the 5200 didn't work, I thought the adapter didn't as well. I took it apart, and promptly lost the reset and select knobs. Since then,Ive tested it, and it works fine, I just have to get in the slots with a toothpick or paperclip to select / reset.

Oh man, I've seen this before. It happened with the Pontiac Fiero. Everyone wanted the 1988 chassis to build a kit-car on, so they became extremely rare and people were basically hacking up ones that were even in super-good condition with 5-speeds and V6s and all the options, just so they could put a ghetto fake Ferrari body on it. Now the 88s go for $5,000 for a beat up one, and over $20,000 for a good condition one... for a 30 year old car!

So, not having looked at a schematic, I have to ask, wouldn't a Pokey Passthrough Adapter cart (Like a High Score cart or a knuckles cart) be an option? I mean, if the XM could presumably do this, then how about a plain 'ole adapter cart?

Perhaps sell one with a socket or ZIF socket even?

A Knuckles cart would be the way to go, design-wise. The HSC Cart was the same size as a standard Atari 7800 cart so it looked like the Leaning Tower of Atari with an actual game inserted into it.

You'd need someone to design a cartridge case and make it available as an STL file for easy 3D Printing. That would be Step 1.

Step 2 would be to get someone of CPUWiz's caliber to make the board. Extra bonus points if you compel CPUWiz to support Dual POKEY. :)

Or Step 3, get someone to clone the XBoard* and make them available again for sale.

*Like the XM, the XBoard supports 128K RAM and POKEY audio. Actually, it supports Dual POKEY. But it doesn't do HSC, SIO with an added PIA chip, a YM2151 sound chip, or an XEGS keyboard. For 7800's that have soldered MARIA chips, you'd have to de-solder it and install a socket on the mobo. But I'm sure people like Electronic Sentimentalities would offer such modding services if such a product were readily available again...

I already did that back in 2013, not much interest back then and I am bored of sitting on thousands of dollars worth of stuff. Plus, it seems to be rather difficult to get the cartridge slot connector.

Say...the POKEY version of Pac-Man Collection!...is the POKEY sound the only difference between that version and the version that's on the Bob DeCrescenzo Collection 30th-anniversary multicart?

I believe that is the case. I have 2 different versions of Bob's Pac Man Collection. But I think having the Pokey sound will make it so much more authentic and I plan on picking it up as soon as Albert makes it available. I have a few Ballblazer carts that I have recently picked up to upgrade my PMC and trade in for Froggie and a Pokey Burger Time since I missed out on the first offering.

BTW Dauber I am getting ready to jump in and start playing catch up with Pie Factory podcast. I notice that I can't find the early episodes. Are those only available on iTunes? I am just finishing the 7800 GbG cast and have already caught up with your Homebrew podcast. Thanks for doing these.

Hmmm....feed is set to allow 99 episodes, and there are only 53 downloadables ever made....weird.

Either case, you can go to piefactorypodcast.com and go to the show notes -- there are links for every episode there.

The 30th Anniversary Multi-Cart, compared to the original version of Pac-Man Collection, contains the updates mentioned here, in addition to an improved color palette.

After the 30th Anniversary Multi-Cart was released, Defender_2600 posted a WIP of his Ms. Pac-Man hack called Inky, which featured updated monsters. Bob followed-up with an update to Pac-Man Collection, shortly thereafter, including those monsters and all the other aforementioned updates and improvements.

When Albert plans on adding a POKEY (substitute) chip contained version of Pac-Man Collection as mentioned earlier, whether it is the original version with just the inclusion of a POKEY (substitute) chip, or one of the versions mentioned above, or a yet to be released/determined version, has yet to be announced.

Noteworthy outside of the inclusion of the previous updates to Pac-Man Collection, Defender_2600 provided a Ms. Pac-Man hack featuring an updated Ms. Pac-Man and other items. The POKEY sounds for Ms. Pac-Man received an update, via a post by tep392, which were applied to the 320 version of Ms. Pac-Man.
