BYO Sega Master System arcade joystick - questions

I'd like to build an arcade style joystick for the sega master system and have a few questions.

1. Am I correct that a joystick can be built similar to an atari 7800 stick by using a DB9 extention cable and directly wiring to the joystick and buttons without a PCB or chip needed?

2. If the above is correct, it looks like button 1 connects to 6 and button 2 to 9 on the cable. Is anything else needed such as resistors, diodes, etc and if so, where?

Thanks!

No other components are needed. Just wire the buttons to the corresponding pins.
