Pitfall Harry's Contest of Doom

To prevent this contest from degenerating into a simple-minded numerical guessing game, I'm not going to acknowledge any more guesses -- right or wrong -- unless you adequately explain how you arrive at your figure. It just wouldn't be fair to the others who have put effort into this contest so far.

Ben

Perhaps we should ask for a clarification: Is the question asking for the total score for the game, meaning both levels, or just for level 2?

I should just say at this point that I am not even going to venture a guess, since I haven't found any sort of documentation of the points you get for the various special items in level 2, and I have no intention of playing all the way through it in an emulator, making note of the points I get (since I know I won't get a perfect score), and tallying them.

Good luck to the remaining intrepid adventurers...

Although I believe the question is in no need of clarification, I'll do so anyway.

WHAT IS PITFALL II ADVENTURERS EDITTION MAX POSSIBLE SCORE

The answer, of course, is the maximum possible points you can score if you play the Adventurer's Edition of Pitfall II (i.e. the version written for the Atari 5200 or for the 8-bit Atari computers). Since the Adventurer's Edition includes not one, but two caverns, you will score the maximum possible points only by playing both levels.

Ben

That's what I figured; I just wanted to be sure.

In retrospect, I can see why you thought, with the clues you gave, that it would be solved much more quickly than it was. I would have to assume I was not alone in thinking that the clues couldn't possibly be so directly related to the question itself.

Ben

Fair enough.

From the manual:

JUST REWARDS

Sure, I love adventure.  But let's give credit where credit is due.  These

are the amounts I agreed to before I left:

   * We're given an advance of 4000 points as soon as we begin.

Thereafter, we'll receive:

   *  5,000 points for every gold bar

   * 15,000 points for the primitive cave rat

   * 20,000 points for the Raj diamond

   * 10,000 points for Rhonda's safe return

   * 10,000 points for Quickclaw's safe return

I believe there are 32 bars of gold, so:

4000 + 32 * 5000 + 15,000 + 20,000 + 10,000 + 10,000 = 219,000

but, in the version listed in the contest there is a second level. I am assuming all the same scoring applies because I am ignorant. Therefore:

219,000 * 2 = 438,000 points maximum.

Cheers!

I believe there are 32 bars of gold, so:

4000 + 32 * 5000 + 15,000 + 20,000 + 10,000 + 10,000 = 219,000

You're math is correct, but your belief in 32 bars of gold in level one is incorrect.

The same scoring does not apply in level two.

My last post on this ever...

assuming it was the point scheme was the same for the most part on both levels...

4000 + 32 * 5000 + 15000 + 20000 + 10000 + 10000 = 219000

Let's just say the gold is worth 5200 in level 2. You know like the system.

4000 + 45 * 5200 + 15000 + 20000 + 10000 + 10000 = 293000

219000 + 293000 = 512000

Your assumptions for level two are also incorrect.

Ben

WHAT IS PITFALL II ADVENTURERS EDITION MAX POSSIBLE SCORE?

My guess will be 499,000 points...

Perfect score on 1st part...199,000

45 gold blocks in second map...worth 5000 points each=225000

Just as an assumption (I know it's probably incorrect, I don't have the game, or an emulator right now, and I have to get to bed...) that the bonus items all totaled up, they add up to 75000 points...making the second map worth 300000

300000+199000=499000 points...

Good night.

*Edit* Like I said, I need to go to sleep...I realized just after I clicked the submit button before that my logic wasn't 100% correct...my math is the same...but I changed the way I got there just a touch...

Your math is correct, but you missed something. Your answer of 499,000 points is incorrect.

Ben

How about 424,000?

All numbers taken from Pitfall Harry's website:

his 199,000 "perfect score" pitfall II (59k of stating points and singular treasures, plus 28 bars @ 5000 ea?)

plus 225,000 for level 2 (45 bars shown on his map @ 5000 ea?).

Perhaps these numbers are from the wrong versions, but it's worth a shot.

-Eric

I woke up because I knew something was nagging me...

I forget the 4000 points you get when you start the second quest (right???)!!

503,000 points

Wrong. The bonus points you get when you start the second quest are the points you earned fom completing the first.

I'm not exactly sure where you're getting the "59k of stating points" from, but 424,000 is incorrect.

Ben

Just shows you how far I've gotten into the game I guess :P

Now I can't get back to sleep!!!! ...and I have no way to play the game to find out what I'm missing...

199,000 for the first level...that's a fact at this point I believe...

In the second quest...

45 gold @ 5000 = 225,000, but now I'm not sure about the 5000

If items worth the same as in first quest...10K+10k+15K+20K=55 K

225K+55K = 280K

280K+199K= 479K

I'm sure that very soon, someone with access to the game, and a good amount of skill will have the answer...

Wrong. The bonus points you get when you start the second quest are the points you earned fom completing the first.

Maybe it's just the lateness of the hour getting to me...but this will be my final try for the night...

199,000 for the first quest...

you then start the next quest with 199,000 points...

going back to my original hypothesis that the items in the second level are worth more than they are in the first quest...(5000 more points each is my guess there)...that you can get an additional 300,000 points in the second quest....bringing your score to 499,000 points.

NOW, you add the 199,000 points you got in the first quest to the 499,000 you end the second quest with...

199,000+499,000=698,000 points for the two quests total!!!
