retrorussell
Hey AAers. What are the most ANNOYING sound effects, music or voices you can think of in arcade/home video games? I used to be really annoyed by the "Help meee" and "Heeeeeeellllp!" in the old arcade oddity FANTASY. Ashley yelling it in RESIDENT EVIL 4 is also ear-shattering. The old game TARG has an annoying, primitive tone that signals the appearance of the Spectar Smuggler. The sound effects for ZOO KEEPER were more than a bit abrasive, even though the game itself was fun. What do you have for me, folks? godslabrat
Anything Mario since Charles Martinet took over. I realize not everyone shares my warm-and-fuzzies over the work of Lou Albano, but why did they have to pick an obnoxious Italian stereotype? And Albano was pretty stereotypical to begin with, so who thought making it worse was a great idea?

Tanooki
Yeah Martinet is fine but Baby Mario is right up there with nails on a chalkboard while someone runs a salt and lemonjuice coated cheese grater over your skin bad. First time a sound effect made me turn off a game after too much exposure.
NinjaWarrior
How about the Super Mario Advance Series Everytime you go in a Level, Let's Go, Lucky ect Don't get me started on New Super Mario Bros. BG SE with the Music is annoying When he climbs, He grunts
Eltigro
The "music" in 1942 for the NES is often criticized... beep beep beep beep beep beep beep...
toptenmaterial
I think that a lot of 7800 ports fall into this catagory. DK Jr is an egregious offender.
Jess Ragan
Wait wait, I've totally got this. It's got a mercilessly annoying opening tune, with every note making me shudder. The rest of the sounds are no picnic either.

The rest of the sounds are no picnic either. They must have known how annoying this is. This was designed to compete for attention in a noisy arcade. In its original context it might not be so bad. mbd30
The "music" in 1942 for the NES is often criticized... beep beep beep beep beep beep beep... Of course they used Morse code during WWII, but what was the point of having constant beeping in this game? Historical accuracy? Did WWII pilots actually hear Morse code the entire time they were in the air and fighting? That must have been a huge distraction.

Tanooki
Oh someone loves Crush Roller, someone at ADK and SNK. Crush Roller - Neo Geo Pocket Color, still retains the fun opening jingle.

+phoenixdownita
The "music" in 1942 for the NES is often criticized... beep beep beep beep beep beep beep... How about the actual Arcade one .... geezzz it's like someone is playing a screaming whistle inside your brain .... it always made want to stop playing ... that and the brutal difficulty of course. So told the 7800 "rendition" (for lack of "better" words) of a few games (Donkey Kong, Mario Bros ...) is abrasive to say the least.
retrorussell
The point scoring in DK for the Atari 2600 has a tune that sounds downright awful. It's like they transposed the DK arcade tune of jumping over a barrel DOWN a few keys. Yuck!

coleco82
I can think of a few : SNES Yoshis Island 2 , baby Mario crying. It makes you not want to be a parent ever lol. SNES Waynes World every time wayne or garth get hit they say "Not" If I had the cart I would smash it with Peter Gabriel's Sledgehammer... SNES one annoying one is Mario Paint, the music composing section, the high pitched Yoshi vacuum sound. I'm glad my dirt devil sounds nothing like that. NES one annoying one is the garbage voice sample in Bad Dudes its supposed to say 'I'm bad" instead we get the pleasure of hearing "Riiam Glagg!" Geez even Sega Master System had clear if not funny voice samples, in great baseball whenever the umpire says "BALL, STRIKE or OUT!" it sounds like he inhaled a lot of helium and drank 2 cans of red bull all at once Coleco82
coleco82
I forgot to mention a few more annoying ones Mortal Kombat 2 for arcade. Liu Kangs Bicycle Kick yammanagibbygoosmash whatever the space gibberish he is trying to yell. Mortal Kombat 1 arcade, Liu Kang's flying kick Waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa. yes Liu Kang we know your upset and pooped your pants it's O.K Coleco82
+darryl1970
I think that a lot of 7800 ports fall into this catagory. DK Jr is an egregious offender. Definitely a +1 on this! It's pretty bad when some of the 2600 versions have better sound effects. While not great, the 2600 version of Mario Bros and Donkey Kong never made me feel like somebody had scratched their nails down a chalkboard, quite like the 7800 versions do. Now DK Jr for the 2600 is probably just as bad. I'll go with Dk Jr too, since I can't pick more than one!
Tanooki
Not a sound effect persay, but being that voices are sounds, I see a large hatred towards EMIL in Tales of Symphonia Dawn of the New World, and in particular in the opening chapter of the game when all he does it whine like a baby and mumble about everything. Once he starts going more dark with power he grows a pair and is far less bad that way and quits to annoy mostly.

ZylonBane
5200 Galaxian. It's like the programmer was trying to screw up all the sound effects on purpose. "BONG" for the explosion sound? Seriously? Not a sound effect persay.... "Per se", cripes.
retrorussell
Also from Mortal Kombat, I feel Raiden's yell when he flies at an enemy to be pretty annoying too. What the hell is he saying? "I HATE BOBOLI!!!" was what it sounded like to me and my brothers back then.
