Super Nintendo Classic Edition - SNES Mini thread

Has there been any u.s. tv with SCART connectors?

Yes. A few high end sets did come with an EIA Multiport. (US name for SCART)

But from what little info I can find, sounds like it supported composite only. Which is understandable.

Scart doesn't necessarily mean RGB. Since the connector was designed to carry everything, there's scart cables that will do composite, svideo, and RGB. One of those signals or maybe even all. This is true even for Europe.

Back on-topic for a moment, I managed to get a pre-order from Amazon France. It is marked as shipped and my card has been charged. It won't be the US looking one, but the Super Famicom one looks cool too.

Hey it all works the same plus it's more sleek and colorful so it's really an all around win there unless you're nostalgically bound to the original molding.

I actually like the boxy NA SNES. Sylish like an old Cadillac, with carts that you can actually read the titles in a stack. And purple (my favorite color) have a long history with Nintendo. GBC, GBA, and Game Cube all launched in purple.

What's funny is the SMRPG have the wrong colors on the action buttons unless they ripped the Japanese colors...

One minor annoyance I'm having with the SNES Classic is while I'm enjoying checking it out, I really miss the ASCII pad on it. Rapid fire works great for Street Fighter moves :P

The Hori Fighting Commander looks to be the spiritual successor, and wth a friendlier button arrangement for fighters, too. Also, wireless.

My TV has a Cable Card slot, but I've never been able to find one that works to use it. Are those even supported anymore?

I've never seen a TV with a cablecard slot, and no cableco in Canada supports them (no in-the-clear digital channels either), my guess is that US market TV's that were DTV ready had them, and all other markets didn't.

Also keep in mind that CRT's are calibrated for the magnetic fields that they are shipped to, so if you take your CRT to the other side of the continent you end up with different magnetic distortions in the screen.

Like, I do not miss CRT's one bit. If it wasn't for the utterly poor quality game input on HD and UHD screens, I'd almost say there's a market for a legitimate "gaming" screen, which is so far filled with TN monitors with poor color gamuts.

Veering back on target, I asked the local BestBuy how many SNES Mini's they had, and they said about 80, and they were gone before noon.

Cable cards are neat, but cable companies don't advertise them -- seems like they'd prefer monthly income from renting their boxes. They SHOULD have become a stronger standard, but you know, business.

I have a pair of cable cards for my Tivo boxes, which I rent from Verizon for about $3.99 a month for each one. It was enough of a pain in the ass to get them to support them that I don't envision changing my equipment or subscription anytime soon.

yes

its interesting that its running the same emulator, be more interesting to see what nintendo based theirs on

though this does not provide the front end (as far as I know) its just the emulation part

I think that's what you were looking for there. :D

Seriously though damn and wow. NAND dump decrypted and works in that format within a week of the things release. I'm impressed. But let's take another angle with this. Would they could they and probably should they convert that emulator to some other formats if at all possible. I'd like to see what really could be thrown at it and see what sticks. I look at this as I did back in the 90s at a research/academic view point when SNES emulation was an infant and kept growing adding modes, eventually audio, and so on. This could be fun.

Summary? Could not display page, according to Wii-U browser. :ponder:

Archive.org doesn't have the page indexed. Isitdown shows the site is reachable. Gonna go try crawl out of bed and load it on my desktop? Uggg...

EDIT: Why the heck does it work on my desktop and not my gamepad? The web design looks pretty old and basic so it should run on most anything. Anyway in case anyone else stuck with a browser that can't parse the page,

they loaded the Classic Mini OS on a Raspberry Pi.

Going back to bed now...

Silly uninformed question that feels stupid to have to ask but what the hey...

The USB power for the SNES Classic mini is like, zero feet long (okay it's about three feet), and I could use more due to the placement (especially with those unbelievably short controller cords, which I'll be getting an extension for). Is it ok for me to use a USB extension on this, or would that dilute the power to the system enough to cause trouble? Or perhaps I just need to buy a generic, longer mini-USB to standard USB cord for this?

If you do that it will run too much current through the psionic coupler and cause the flux capacitor to overheat. Better not do that.

Just get an extension cord for the wall outlet if you're concerned, but in all seriousness, USB extension cords depends on the gauge of the wire used, not the length, because thinner wires run hotter. So if you're worried, make sure the USB extension cord is thick, and not one of those zippy-ribbon kind.

Looks like they are not wasting any time.

Tried and failed earlier today to unlock Starfox 2 by completing stage 1 of Starfox. I suck too much at the original game LOL... :P

How many of the bundled games had expansion chips? Am I missing any? IIRC, only Megaman X2 and X3 used the special Capcom chip.

Super Mario Kart: DSP1

Super Mario RPG: SA-1

Kirby Superstar: SA-1

Star Fox: FX

SMW2/Yoshi's Island: FX2

Starfox 2: FX2

You're right, and for fun eyeball this: https://www.reddit.com/r/miniSNES/comments/74dc3c/snes_classic_hacking_how_is_the_progress_going/

They're working on getting a compatibility list written up for it. SDD1 isn't looking good unless something is being missed in settings or emulator command lines.

Mega Man X2 and X3 (C4) that does work.

DSP2-4 (which run 1 game only, don't work.)

SA1 is being worked on, appears that it may be 100% or only most/some functions done as a few games aren't working so far, but because of a unique header/footer format the SNES roms use on the little system it could be just not understanding how they work yet entirely too as could be said for any chip.

Ok scratch that, fresh host post on that reddit -- https://www.reddit.com/r/miniSNES/comments/74z4oo/street_fighter_alpha_2_running_on_canoe/

SFA2 works, person explaining it as of yet but gave proof.

You've got yours, yeah?

I mean, you're an hour away man, and it's not like they're exactly 'rare' around here at the moment. The Craigslist shitheads don't seem to be moving any product, lol. ;)

Yup I got it on midnight at a walmart. Fun times, messed with around a 1/3 or so of the games so far.

Funny thing is I was about to suggest getting a Wii Pro Classic controller (which has the nifty bonus the home button functioning as the console reset).. but then I realized that the dang cord on that thing is as short as ever. Probably the same as the old NES Classic pads. Wow..
