Is the garbled text similar to this?

image.thumb.png.12da55e0d17e7be51ff0814100e8e50c.png

This is from Kururin Splash. The rest is fine but the text box is all screwy. I asked about this and it has something to do with SDK font functions and how the GC uses different character encodings between regions. I am told the correct font does exist on PAL consoles but that SDK issue makes it look gibberish. And it's a game specific issue.

Also, good time to sell now as prices are high and the games still work. I think my buying days are done, apart from a few titles like Luigi's Mansion.

Same thing, and Kururin is known to do it as well, same random windings/fonts whatever you want to call it, it just can't seem to deal with a few titles.

I just shipped out Metroid Prime, AC with the memory card, and Paper Mario.  I have a number of others with bids that close in the evening of the 31st.  As I said here or elsewhere, I set BIN prices at what it usually sells for, starter prices are 30% less to get aggressive attention.  I've got it all in a couple totes and a small set of boxes in the floor here in the room all ready to roll.  The last 1/3 of the games I'm staggering after a number of them go for wave two.  DEFENDER since it's my last game I had a hand in credited, keeping that one on the shelf but the rest are toast.  Anything that got a Steam port I'll get back like Symphonia the 2 Sonic Adventures, etc especially this time of year with the insane 75% off deals.

Drinking a few beers and playing some Frolf. Mushrooms would be interesting with this if one was into psychedelics. Kerokeroking DX aka Ribbit King.

Trying out my new Freeloader this weekend and getting hooked on this weird, weird game. This is the Japanese version because the US/PAL costs an arm and a leg. In this case the foreign language is actually an advantage and adds to the charm because the game doesn't make sense anyway.

I just recently started playing again with my GC … it basically sat unused in a container for almost 8y.

I bought it very late when I started collecting videogames consoles but only had a handful of games for it and the gbplayer.

Anyhow I had lying around a xenogc bought long ago but never installed … until last week.

It worked and came with the xenoshell 1.05 firmware… I installed it because I wanted to try gbi … alas my gc did not like mini cdr … or so I thought … turns out it was fine once it heated up (went from red error box to just booting, I could reproduce it at will, once warm it would boot mini cdr all the time)… of course I since performed the pot adjustment and now it boots mini cdr 100% without needing to warm up.

Anyway I found out there’s an updated fw for xenogc that can run xeno.dol from the MC (can be any dol with that name … like Swiss)… and it does but it seems it only works for the smaller MC … a 1019 and 2043 did not work but a 251 did (all unofficial cheap knockoff).
There is another xenogc fw version that allegedly can run Swiss.dol from sd (sp2 as well but I only have a DOL-101) but when I tried that fw the disc stops working (even with original), I managed to reflash back to “MC xeno.dol” fw by starting with the chip off, recognize an original, switch the chip on, put the Swiss disc in, it then boots it and then reflash (I thought I bricked my xenogc for good).

So now I can boot Swiss via mini cdr or with any bootable disc by pressing start/z with the 251 MC with the xeno.dol in … neat!

And of course I had an unopened wiisd around since about a decade as well so via Swiss I can play many games that way too, aka no need to burn mini cdr.

Was wondering if anyone got the “sd Swiss.dol” fw working, may as well boot from sd if possible vs MC due to the size issue above.

As far as I know, are there any other GameCube games besides Tales of Symphonia that came on multiple discs?

Yeah there were a number of them.  The Resident Evil games were, Killer 7, so was Metal Gear Solid.

I don't want to try and remember or even list more as I know some, so I did a fast google, this is the first hit.

https://gamicus.fandom.com/wiki/List_of_multi-disc_GameCube_games  (also includes 2 CD packages where it was 2 games in a case, game+ demo, etc.)

I'm very unfamiliar with Gamecube but have started to try out a few games using my Wii.  I was playing Ikaruga last night and played it back-to-back with the Dreamcast version, both on a CRT.  I'm struggling to see any differences in the versions, but that's fine because the original is great as it is.

I do wish this system had more shoot em ups.  It has a small handful of them and nothing that can't be played elsewhere, from what I can tell.

Overall I'm pleasantly surprised at how good some of the games look compared to PS2.  I just wish there were more pick-up-and-play type games.  I found versions of Lode Runner, Bonk's Adventure, and Wonder Boy that appear to be Japan-only but are pretty decent for a quick blast.  I played a bit of Crash Bandicoot as well, and it was OK - pretty much identical to the gameplay style of the PS1 games, only with higher-res graphics.

For pick up and play, I know quite a few:

-Space Raiders/Space Invaders: Invasion Day

-Evolution Worlds

-Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door

-Super Mario Sunshine

-Super Smash Bros. Melee

-F-Zero GX

-Mario Kart: Double Dash

-Both Zelda titles

-Midway Arcade Treasures

-Both of the Metroid Prime games

-Chaos Field

-Radio Allergy/Radirgy

-Wario World

You have a very weird definition of pick up and play, a story-driven adventure/RPG is not that. And F-Zero GX is pick up and pain, because it will kick your ass and you will enjoy every minute of it.

Mr Driller: Drill Land (great soundtrack) and Kururin Squash! are great titles in the Japan-only category, if you are into that sort of thing.

I also very much enjoyed Ace Golf (serious fun) and Ribbit King (ridiculous fun) for hitting the tee once in a while.

Super Mario Strikers for some frantic arcade soccer

Mario Party games are great for some multiplayer fun.

Super Monkey Ball 1 and 2 are a must for quick paced board tilting mayhem

This game is pretty cool, and very much the type of quick blast game I enjoy.  I was pretty bummed to find out that it only recognizes analog controls for movement because I'd love to play this one on my multi-console arcade setup.  Honestly, I don't even see how the analog control adds anything at all... in fact, I found it made the control feel a bit sluggish.  Ah well.

I've got a version of Mr. Driller elsewhere (PS1 maybe?)  Pretty fun game, I'll give the GC version a try.  That Kururin game looks like it could be really addictive.

Looks cool, but man, it looks almost identical to Hot Shots Golf (which I enjoy).

I grabbed this for Wii a while ago, which I think is pretty much the GC version with some tweaks.  Agreed, it's really fun.

Thanks for the suggestions
