+therealbountybob
Twilight World If you only want to play one game then just play this one Seasonal Spooktacleeeaaar! Ha! Just when you thought we had exhausted all the ghostie games here's the latest batch of baddies to keep you amused, entertained and moderately excited! I've called in a few Demons and a couple of BASIC games too, be scared I've had a quick go on these and weeded some out Updated Disk images with all the games on: Disk 1: HSC14 R19 Disk1-v2.atr (mydos/mypicodos menu) Twilight Word - decent platformer - collect the crystals and go to the block of stuff to end the level. Please read instructions on Atarimania, take the default options. Rated 7.7 Demon Birds - quick bird blaster - seems to kill off first life on 1st go (start to restart) Demon Hunt - only 100 seconds to play so grab them demons! Ghost Hunter 2 - iiii'ts pacman! OS fixed version could be goodie play on Field 1 (default) & also Field A (press select) Spooky Castle - multi screen platformer. Starts off paused, so press a key. For some reason you need to walk off edges not jump off and fall! Midnight Magic - 2600 pinball at it's best, the 2012 release (this one was played before). Play with bumpers off (option) & no pulling down to double flip! Marius: "In 2600 MM there is this great goal of the 5 bats on the top of the screen. You have to hit all these 5 to get in a new color screen. The points are 2x, 3x, 4x or 5x. With the 'things' on top left and right you can get a 'shoot again' as soon as you enter a new colored screen." Wikipedia: "Hitting all five drop targets at the top of the table increases the bonus multiplier (2x, 3x, and so on). Extra balls can be earned when hitting the rollover targets at the top left and right corners of the table when the bonus multiplier is activated." Found the 2600 Midnite Magic Manual Disk 2: HSC14 R19 Disk2-v2.atr BASIC Games - wait for that initialization (emulator users enable BASIC) (DOS2.5/reset proof menu, press reset to return to the menu) Demon Dungeon - I liked the look of this one, reminded me a bit of the recent Curse of the Lost Miner Ghostly - basic pac-man goodness. Play on Difficulty 3! Nightmare Maze - Fandal has kindly re-fixed this - Either boot disk 2 without BASIC and load the file from DOS using "L" or load disk 1, then attach disk 2, then press 1 to read the directory (would not fit on disk 1) Uses diagonals Scoring Twighlight world will be full HSC points. The "Spooktacleeear" games will be ranked and totalled for another set of HSC points (12pts for 1st place...) Round now ends Saturday 18th November 10am UK time EVERYONE WELCOME TO PLAY - Post if you need any help Edited November 11, 2017 by therealbountybob Extended 'tll Sat 18th 10am UK time

carlsson
RedThunder: In order to load the BASIC programs, you need to enable internal BASIC in your emulator. If you're playing on the real deal, don't hold down the Option key when you're booting. However it seems correct that Midnight Magic is not part of the first disk, but it is not worse than we can download it separately. Also Demon Dungeon is on disk image #2 but not in the ready-made menu. Press ESC and type RUN"D:DEMONDG.BAS" to load it. By the way when you mention Midnight Magic, which one are you referring to? Midnite Magic, PD game from 2012: http://www.atarimania.com/game-atari-400-800-xl-xe-midnight-magic_28487.html David's Midnight Magic, Broderbund 1982: http://www.atarimania.com/game-atari-400-800-xl-xe-david-s-midnight-magic_5979.html David's Midnight Magic, Atari 1987: http://www.atarimania.com/game-atari-400-800-xl-xe-david-s-midnight-magic_1529.html If we want a pinball game not previously in the HSC, there is also this one that is not categorized at Atarimania, though it seems more war oriented than scary: Night Mission, Sublogic 198x: http://www.atarimania.com/game-atari-400-800-xl-xe-night-mission-pinball_3698.html Edited October 23, 2017 by carlsson
+therealbountybob
I've just re-posted the two disks! Disk 1 has Midnite Magic (the 2600 version from 2012) but wasn't on the menu (you can press L to see it) - fixed Disk 2 now has the menu showing both games, plus Nightmare Maze that needs loading from DOS See 1st post for all the details Thanks carlsson - we've played Night Mission a couple of times and the PCS Creep Show, perhaps there is another PCS one? my scores Demon Birds 220 scary Demon Hunt 13 simple Ghost Hunter 2 12,040 very nice Spooky Castle 350 tricky but I can see this will be playable Midnite Magic 3,340 very rustly Demon Dungeon 12,000 some nice features Ghostly (Difficulty 3) 4260 has potential Nightmare Maze 900 - nightmare to move around the maze more like I'm forced to include one stinker each multi round as decreed by HSC policy subsection 4.2d

carlsson
Ok, here is my first batch of scores and some comments: Demon Birds - 190 pts Frantic game, not sure exactly how to survive. It seems to have a bug in that the first life starts with 50 energy points, then only 20 energy points for every following life. It means if you can stay alive long enough in the beginning, that is where you get the good scores. Do you get extra energy if you manage to zap the lightning bolt without getting hit yourself? Demon Dungeon - 8000 pts On the plus side, there doesn't seem to be any limitation on how far you can fall in this game. A bit like a platform puzzle game with several exits that seems to reward you well in points once you pick something up. Demon Hunt - 7 demons Typical type-in from a listing. Not that interesting for longer than the two minutes a round lasts. Ghost Hunter II - 11160 pts A rather standard Pac-Man clone with unusual placement of the power pills. The ghosts move rather randomly. Nice feature that the bonus fruit is collected to build an extra life, if you get enough fruit? I only got halfways there so I'm not certain that it works that way. Ghostly - 33990 pts Never mind, I didn't notice this is supposed to be played on difficulty level 3. Another Pac-Man with just two ghosts, but what seems like power pills are just bonus pills that get summed up at the end of the game. Thus no ghost hunting, just keep avoiding them. Spooky Castle - 200 pts Very finicky controls, but at least I managed to get 3-4 rooms into it. Perhaps fun if you're into that sort of game, I am not so much. Twilight World - 14520 pts The most playable of them all. Movement in all directions including the ability to travel upwards as far as you like. A bit like Mr Robot meets Spelunker plus some own elements. I'll play the last two later. Edited October 23, 2017 by carlsson

carlsson
Complementary scores: Ghostly (difficulty 3) - 8490 pts Ok, after changing the difficulty level this one became much more of a challenge, and an interesting choice between saving power pills for later/end of game bonus or use them when possibly required. Midnite Magic - 28465 pts Hit the thing in the middle and the score rolls like crazy. Nightmare Maze - 300 pts Sluggish movement, dull colour scheme (when the Atari has so many colours to choose between!) and generally I agree with TRBB this is a stinker, given it used to be a commerical release, not a type-in or something distributed through user groups.

+therealbountybob
Twighlight World 91,290 reached D - it's a bit like boulderdash re the gems: collect 30 for a life then the counter resets. Very nice game - on the other difficulty you have to collect all the gems to do the levels, I've been trying to get them all as it's the right thing to do Midnite Magic - 31,205 eventually I cleared all the top coloured targets and reached the 2nd level (blue screen) - see 1st post for info

The one I've listed as small ball "v2" has a rounded ball and also plays nicely - play any version you like guys. 45,330 (original version) Ghost Hunter 2: We'll also have a go on Field A (press select, it's after #16). This one seems to cycle through the boards. Looks like pressing fire will allow you to hide (once) and the collected bits are 6ths of a pacman segments! carlsson
So in the end we've got to submit 10 different scores on 9 different games of which 1 game scores full HSC points and the remaining 9 scores are grouped together for another set of HSC points, of which 1 game has two different levels of difficulty. I do believe I've posted one score on each game, though I may have abused the rules on either of the games for whose the rules were posted several days after the round began. Ghost Hunter 2 Field A - 8140 pts Demon Hunt - 10 demons Demon Birds - 420 pts Midnite Magic - 48000 pts (started with bumpers off, though they reappear after a while) Edited October 28, 2017 by carlsson

Ghost Hunter 2 Field A - 8140 pts Demon Hunt - 10 demons Demon Birds - 420 pts Midnite Magic - 48000 pts (started with bumpers off, though they reappear after a while) You probably deserve a bonus point for such an accurate summary of the round I've posted more info on MM and a link to the instructions on the 1st post - the bumpers are activated when you hit the top target/arrow... speaking of which 169,705 got to the 2x stage - not sure why it goes back sometimes when you drop a ball and not others (possibly) ? Ghost Hunter Field "A" 11,010 this is quite challenging. Don't know whey they didn't just make the game go through each board as a default Demon Dungon - not improved score but found this screen that looks impassable from the top at least: so Demon Bird bahing eh? prepare for battle it's on, carlsson tables tonight!
carlsson
At first I thought the fields on Ghost Hunter 2 were randomly generated, at least from some algorithm but they seem to be fixed but cycled randomly. It made me wonder if there are any Pac-Man games with randomized, but reasonably playable mazes. And I don't consider level 256 on the arcade version of Pac-Man to be neither randomized nor playable.

carlsson
A few comments: Sikor seems to have scored 4 on Demon Hunt, not Demon Dungeon (which counts points in multiples of 1000's anyway). I also increased my score on Demon Hunt yesterday to 10 (no screenshot), not that it matters at the moment. Sikor also posted a score of 2600 pts on Ghostly, whether it was played on difficulty 3 or other. With so many games to keep track of, I fully understand if some score gets misplaced...
