Over the last year I have been working on having the original Atari Jaguar Pro controllers re-made. It has been a long haul with lots of work and time however it has finally paid off and they are in their final stages of assembly and will be shipping to me at the end of the month. I am currently selling them for $120 for a pair plus shipping costs and will ship world-wide. Please consider ordering a pair if you love the Atari Jaguar system, you won't be disappointed. No expense was spared in making them and they are made to exacting standards to ensure they will work just like the original or perhaps even better! They have a one year warranty so if anything happens let me know. Please purchase them from Albert here at Atari Age https://atariage.com/store/index.php?l=product_detail&p=1192 or my website https://hoskinson-industries.myshopify.com/

Let me know if you have any questions.

News Updates

Update 04-09-2019

I am looking into getting some Atari Jaguar extension cables made. Hope to have some information soon.

Update 11-27-2018

All existing orders have been filled. All new orders should ship in 1-2 days after being placed.

Update 11-16-2018.

UPS driver only dropped off 4 of the 10 boxes today so I was not able to process everyone's order. I packaged orders 1001 through 1097 today and will have them in the mail tomorrow. You should get two emails one from Stamps.com with the tracking number and one from Shopify indicating your order has shipped. Should get another batch of boxes in on Monday and will try to get as many done that day as possible. Thank you for your patience.

Update 11-15-2018

Controllers are scheduled to arrive at my house tomorrow. I will start shipping them as soon as I get them. Here is the UPS tracking number if anyone is interested 1ZV90Y440344198957

Update 11-08-2018

I must apologize to everyone that is waiting. Shipping is taking forever for some reason. Much longer than any package I have received before. I am working with the logistics company and my contact who sent them to get everything sorted out. Fear not they will be here eventually however it is just taking some time. As soon as they are in I will update this and ship them ASAP.

Update 10-25-2018.

Controllers have shipped to me today. Should be arriving shortly. Will update this when they arrive. When they arrive I will start shipping all the orders.

Update 10-20-2018.

The controllers are preparing to be shipped and are in quality testing right now. They are scheduled to be shipped next Tuesday to me. Half via airmail and half via sea mail. Just to shout out please buy some of these controllers if you previously offered to. A decent number of people on the pre-order list have currently not placed an order yet which unfortunately leaves me currently still under the break even point despite having enough pre-orders for twice as many controllers being sold than I needed! My original plans to try to re-make the Atari Jaguar CD system after this as such are now on hold.

Update 10-10-2018

The controller shells, buttons and silicone pads are all finished for the 2000 controllers. Waiting PCB boards and controller cables and can move to final assembly. I made a website to handle the orders. You can order now and I will ship the controllers when they are ready. I will ship in the order received. https://hoskinson-industries.myshopify.com/

Update 09-27-2018

Finally have shipping date from assembly plant. They will ship on October-22-2018 to me. So about a month to go.

Update 09-24-2018

This project has taken a lot longer than I could believe it could unfortunately due to persistent delays. Just when I had started production what happens we found another issue to address. It is actually a design problem with the original controllers. If you shake the controller enough or drop it just right the PCB board can become dislodged slightly resulting in the button contacts no longer lining up with the buttons making it difficult to use them. We re-designed the inner case slightly adding some extra bracing and this fixed the problem. It was a rare problem that only occurred very infrequently however worth correcting before the run was started. I am still waiting for the run of 2000 controllers to be finished as this delay is what prevented their release so far otherwise these would have been finished. Almost there everyone I know this is painful!

Update 08-23-2018

Got revised controllers in the mail and they are exactly as I wanted. All the buttons work like the original and they are very sturdy. I told them to start mass production and will have any ETA shortly of when these will be arriving hopefully.

Update 07-21-2018

Got the controllers and they look like the originals and everything works perfectly except for the D-Pad. It works however you have to push down somewhat harder than the original to activate it. They are working on fixing this. As soon as it is down then I can start production. I hope this is soon.

Update 07-11-2018

The finished prototypes are being sent out today for my inspection. Will do a comprehensive review of the controllers with video and ensure they match the original. If they do I can start mass production!

Update 06-06-2018

Since these are getting a lot closer I wanted to make sure that I have everyone down that is interested. If you sent an email previously please send one to me personal email address as well Starwander@Comcast.net just so I can make sure you are on the list. Once they arrive I will start sending out emails to everyone on the list. Yes everyone that send me an email will get a reply thanking them and acknowledging receipt.

Update 06-04-2018

The controller shells are nearly finished. These are the prototypes off the new mold. They need some refining and the final samples will not have the Atari logo on them. We are getting so close now! Another great piece of news is the controllers will be assembled by the same factory that made the original Sega Genesis controllers for Sega! Also for those interested in understanding the name change I sold Mortoff Games about a month ago in order to free up time for other projects like this one.

Update 05-21-2018

The small button mold is finished and pictures have been posted. Things are moving along at a clipper pace now. The boxes are being made as well and will be included free of charge.

Update 05-14-2018.

The silicone buttons are done and they sent pictures of the first samples of the production press. I have attached them to the post.

Update 05-08-2018.

There were some recommendations about having a box that growled like a Jaguar when you open it. Since we have time I went ahead and actually discussed with the box company if such a think could be done and it indeed could! The cost wouldn't be cheap however and despite how exciting it might be unsure if the cost would be worth it.

Update 04-23-2018

I thought I would post another update. Things are progressing well; however slowly. The biggest part of the project is nearly done the molds for the buttons and controller shells and should be posting pictures of these shortly. The conductive pads, circuit board and controller cable are still plugging along. As soon as I get the samples for the controller shells and buttons will have post pictures for everyone. One thing I was brewing over is if I should have a box for the controller or just sell them without a box. Haven't decided yet. Thank you for your patience.

Update 03-12-2018.

The Chinese Holiday totally destroyed my time table as I had hoped to have these for JagFest however not going to happen now. The molds have been delayed and as such we are looking for another month to get the molds finished. If anyone has any questions happy to answer them. I am sorry for the delay.

Update 01-31-2018

Sorry for the slow updates however things have been hectic. I have been working on getting the Atari 2600 and 5200 shells released and it has been challenging. The Atari 2600 shells should be shipping next week if anyone needs brand new shells for home brews and such. The Atari 5200 shells need more work still. For the Jaguar controllers they are moving along nicely. The prototype PCB board came in; however they duplicated the original non-pro controller! Regardless that is an easy fix and they are making the correct boards right now. Hopefully can post a video shortly of the prototype board working in an original controller. Can't wait to get these out and should have more news about ETA in the coming days. Thank you for your patience.

Update 01-17-2018.

Sorry for the slow updates. Manufacturing of the prototype parts was slowed down due to the Holidays. The sample PCB board is on its way which in my opinion is the most critical part to prove that the original PCB can be remade and work with the system. The demo video the factory sent me showed it working perfectly and as soon as I get it I will see if I can set up a demo video of it in action.

We Did It!

Update 12-21-2017 We are at 632 controllers ordered and have meet the goal number for funding purposes. I am starting discussions with the various parts suppliers to start work on the project and will put the down payment on everything. I will update you all about the progress as it becomes available. They will be sending me a demo prototype controller of the final product to show off. MOQ of 2 controllers

--------------------------------------------------------

Update 12-20-2017: Alright folks we are nearing the end of the pre-order thread here. If anyone else was interested in jumping in now is the time.

Update 12-03-2017: We are at 499 total controllers pre-ordered. Let's keep going folks.

Update 11-13-2017: We are at 301 total controllers pre-ordered. Let's keep going folks.

Legacy Stuff to read if interested. Basically how these were made.

Overview

I have been working with Clint Thompson here on the forums to see if it was possible to develop a brand new replica of the original Atari Jaguar Pro Controllers. I have a lot of experience in making the individual parts; however I have never remade an entire accessory before. It appears that it is possible despite its complexity. To re-make the original controller the following molds have to be made:

  1. Atari Jaguar Pro Controller Shell Mold
    1. Re-making the exterior shell exactly the same minus the logo isn't hard. The quality should be the same as my reproduction Atari Jaguar shells can attest to
  2. D Button Mold and Red Buttons Mold
    1. Have to have two button molds since they are different colors.
  3. Silicone Membrane Mold
    1. The company I use is a top rated one that makes these for many large companies all over the world. The quality should be excellent. Obviously we want to mimic the original feel of the controllers and will try our hardest to do so there may be slight variation from the original however.
  4. Connector Port Mold
  5. Silicone Board Mold

Challenges to this Project

  • Cost: The project will cost over $30,000 to complete and as such we need to have sufficient interest to make it viable which we have met. If you are interested in purchasing one please reserve one by emailing Starwander@Comcast.net and leave your email and full name stating your interest in the controllers so we can get a tally.
  • Quality: The controllers must work on the original hardware and must feel and work like the original. To this end the controllers would not be released and sold until both conditions were satisfied

FAQ

  • What system do these work with?
  • What would be the price?
    • $60 per controller with a MOQ of 2 controllers at a time
  • Does the price include shipping?
    • In the US shipping should be $5.00 for two controllers. Outside the US a 1lb 4oz package [Each controller is 7ozs] would cost $21.14.
  • How do I order one?
    • Email Starwander@Comcast.net
  • How are you going to ensure quality?
    • During the design phase once the mold is finished they send samples for approval at this time its our opportunity to refine the design until the product is correct.
  • Are you going to ask us to pay upfront and then use the money to build the controllers and deliver at a nebulous future date like Kickstarter?
    • Absolutely not. You don't pay until the controllers are ready to ship.
  • Can I return the controller if I don't like it?
    • Yes you can return them however I would not sell them unless they are like the original
  • Can you include additional features such as USB cable, rapid fire feature or joystick?
    • The goal of this project is to re-make the original as designed. If the project is very successful maybe down the road. If you are interested in offering an add-on or modification service for people buying these controllers I fully support and endorse it.
  • Will it have the Atari Jaguar Logo?
    • No it will not have the logo
  • Is this legal?
    • Absolutely legal to re-make them since the patents expired on original hardware design. This is the reason people make 1:1 clone systems of the NES/SNES and such now.

Big Jag fan here, have every game and a couple of pro controllers already. Have to say not interested unless there is a rapid fire addition. No intent to disparage the project, just voicing my stance as I really have no need for this otherwise. I can't be the only Jag owner that needs a little extra oomph to make it worthwhile.

I totally appreciate it, please anyone should be free to voice their opinion for or against the project. The project as it stands already has significant hurdles due to the cost. Adding in additional features would not only require additional costs however it would drastically increase the complexity of this project therefore making it that much more difficult to get going.

The Pro controller is all I use even on the Falcon.... I wished the rotary controller was built in to the pro controller however, I really don't like having to swap out for t2k etc.. :) that would give these the edge!

The problem is going to be the maths aren't in your favour. :(

If its going to cost 30000 plus to produce then the unit cost of 50 to 60 dollars means you are going to have to sell 500 to 600 plus controllers just to cover the cost. This is into a very limited market.

I have a few pro controllers already. But the opportunity to get them replaced or help others to have the opportunity to play a Jag with better controllers than the standard ones, with out having to shell out $200 - $500 for that experience, deserves support. Current prices really are extreme right now, it was only a few years ago I got one for under $100, on Ebay. I find it hard to believe that the demand/rarity has increased that much in such a short time. But if there is really a demand that justifies the sudden price increase of pro-controllers on Ebay, hopefully that demand will support the effort to make new ones at a reasonable price.

This is why there is a 2-controller requirement per person - individually it probably wouldn't make it. At least with this model, there's a chance. There are other resellers to also consider in potentially carrying stock to sell later but the initial interest needs to be from the primary Jaguar community.

Very astute indeed; hence the reason to poll the community to see if it is possible.

Are you going to make alternate colors available? Like gray and blue? Just curious.

Mitch

If there was massive demand then yes that could happen however for this initial run only black will be available

I'm interested, as long as it isn't a cheap POS. I would also pay more for buttons with LED's.. The quality has to be either the same or better for me to jump on this.

I agree its got to be good or not at all

When I first read the sum of 30 000 I thought it will never happen, but actually selling 250 pairs doesn't seem so far out there. I really hope that enough people sign up for this. Just the weekend on Jagfest we were talking that someone should make new Pro controllers. As if we've been heard.:)

If they are up to the standard of the original count me in. I intend to be playing my Jag for decades to come and having worn out several standard controllers already I welcome this development.

Good luck with the project!

I don't care about the Jaguar anymore, but if there were an adapter to use this on a PC, I might be interested. I'd also be open to something that's less authentic (though not a "cheap POS") rather than strictly authentic-feeling if it would get the manufacturing cost down.

It's probably best to consider this a feature request rather than a show of interest, since I'm not the main target for this. But if expanding the target to include people like me would increase your chances of success, please consider.

I'd be in for another pair, but I don't see the numbers crunching on this.

We have to get about 250-300 people to buy two sets to make this work.

Have you tried contacting some of the larger retro gaming retailers? Perhaps Best, B&C, Goat Store, etc would be interested although there isn't much meat on the bone for them. Also based on how these move on EBay I'm sure you could move plenty of them over time there.
