My sears video arcade 2 swaps to paddles on combat and target fun

I tried about 50 other games on it and it goes to joystick for joystick games and paddles for paddle games, BUT with combat and target fun only, it wants to switch to paddles (which obviously doesn't work). Unless you physically hold in the joystick button it will say paddles for those 2 games and will even change to paddles the second you lift your finger from said button. Anyone know what is going on?

Weird. Does it have that weird combo controller like Gemini? Even there I didn't know the system was "aware" of what controller was even hooked up to it, using game info to determine the controller used.

I simply have a regular joystick in it, not having any of the funky dual purpose controllers around. And yes this seems to be really odd behavior. And I tried several combat carts just in case.
