This is certainly an interesting game, especially considering that it was a pack in game with the Atari 7800. I can see why they made it a pack in though! It has really astounding graphics, platforming gameplay with a brand new IP, and a good bit of replay value. On the downside it's frustrating as all get out and definitely one of those games that your success or failure just comes down to trial and error, rote memorization, and a little bit of luck. I spent about three and a half hours playing it tonight and after many (many) attempts I finally made it to the 5th tower with a score of...

Got to Tower 2, which is where, if memory serves, is as far as my patience ever allowed me to play this game over the last 20 years. I could upload a pic if necessary, but my score hardly warrants it. I might give it another go before the end anyways... we'll see.

I put in another 3 hours tonight and managed to make it to the 8th and final tower "The Edge of Doom". I was really hoping I could beat the game since I made it to the last level with 5 lives in reserve, but holy cow is that final level appropriately named. Even after watching some other people play through it on YouTube and memorizing exactly what to do to make it through the level I couldn't get even halfway up the last tower. I will keep trying though, since I would very much like to beat this game if I can, but for now my current high score is…

First, congrats on your perseverance and score, but wow, this quote sums it the game's philosophy: frustration, memorization and controller-breaking difficulty.

Thank you Bydo! Strangely I haven't been getting frustrated with Tower Toppler and have actually been really enjoying it, which is weird because difficult platformers usually drive me batty. I guess there's just so little in the way of platforming games on the 7800 that I'm appreciating it in spite of the difficulty. Your username reminded me that the gameplay is a lot like R-Type: Practice, die, memorize, repeat. It can be fun if you like the mechanics of the game, but maddening if you don't.

I think my biggest issue has been the (unfortunate) timing of whatever that jerk thing is called that comes from all the way across the screen and knocks me off, sometimes all the way to the water. It's easily what's cost me the most when I get caught in a spot where I can't avoid it!

But, yes, there's a lot of trial and error with this game. But, it looks soooo pretty... except maybe the "fish" on the in between levels. They look like weird, giant shrimp to me. :)
