Budget Atari and Capcom arcade cabinets to see release this fall!

Recommended Posts

This will be a good series for me to hop in and get the Ms. Pac-Man, because I've been waiting for them to return to the original cabinet side art.

I assume an Atari Deluxe will be soon to follow - wonder if they'll return to an Asteroids cabinet or something else?

Well I finally put together the Tempest / Atari Legacy 12-in-1 (my only previous arcade1up being the original 12-1). While assembling I thought the materials still felt as cheap as the initial batch.. But hey for me it's all good at $200. 😜

Once I actually played it.. the trackball and spinner are definitely improved upon the original arcade1up cabs, where Crystal Castles and Tempest are actually playable without having to upgrade the hardware. I still have the Glenn's retro-show spinner on my old cab (which I don't know if it's compatible with this generation) but so far the stock hardware is fine enough that I don't really feel the need to do any replacing.

The Missile Command button layout has been well talked about already,  but one other minor nitpick I have is Major Havoc is controlled only with the trackball.  They should have allowed the choice of either the trackball or the spinner because as we know, Major Havoc was a roller controller game, and often the MH conversion kits for Tempest machines just ended up using the spinner controller as well. So why limit it to trackball?  🤷‍♂️

All that said, I still am leaning towards modding this thing and putting in an emulation box with ONLY  trackball/spinner/button arcade games.. i.e. so I can bring back stuff like Liberator and Quantum, but then also have stuff like Breakout/Arkanoid, Marine Date, or Reactor and other stuff I can't easily play on my regular barcade. Maybe 2023 I'll finally do it.

Apologies if I just failed to read a post somewhere...but what's up with the Deluxe versions?  I looked at the A1up site about them and it's vague...

"

Get over here!  Unpack all the Fatalities you remember and get ready to hear “FINISH HIM!” Arcade1Up is back with Mortal Kombat Deluxe Edition.  With 14 classic games, including 4 different Mortal Kombat versions, you’ve got yourself hours of fighting fun.  The Deluxe Edition crisp 17" LCD brings all the visual details to life; with a real-feel joystick and buttons, and integrated dual speakers to make this a perfect at home arcade game experience.

The sleek, single cabinet design and lit marquee give it an impressive look that would add character and class to any room in the house.  The faux front coin door provides that authentic retro look, that will have you instinctively searching your pockets for quarters.  "

So like...this is below the PRO series, but above the regular series then?  It's got no riser but height is integrated, which is good I guess.  And it has the molded coin doors.  But...no SuzoHapp or Sanwa controls?  Like, just trying to figure out the features.

Yeah, mainly an improvement in the accuracy of the shapes of the cabinets, making them a bit closer to the original cabinet designs. So for example the Pac-Man cabinets have the monitor angled in line with the angle of the control panel, like the original arcade cabinets did. Other than that and the features you mentioned, they are the same games as the recent Legacy releases.

The A1up community is expecting a new run of Atari Star Wars cabinets to be announced, probably on Monday. Eagle-eyed logistics-watchers noticed the cabinets arriving at ports on the West coast recently according to a listing on a bill of lading, and A1up will be hosting a livestream on Monday, possibly to announce this cab. It has recently shown up for sale in Canada as well, but presumably this next batch would be available in the US. So, nothing officially confirmed yet, but in case anyone here has been wanting another opportunity to get this cabinet, it may be soon.

They were already listed for sale at Best Buy and already sold out...

So apparently that was some new-old-stock that Best Buy sold last week. The new version of the cabinet is largely the same but it does have a molded coin door decoration on the front panel, and the side and front artwork now extends onto the riser.

I like the lit Coin doors, as well as the black trim, quite a bit.  But not worth buying a new one & selling my original version.  Good upgrades, for sure.  Their biggest home run so far (the original), good plan to not change it up too much for the re-release.

Any word on the future direction for A1up?  I'm seeing speculation online from the usual YTers...

I think the main concern is the downgrade in monitor quality from the BOE ones that were generally getting favorable reactions to the "TN" type which was on....the Centipede, MK1 legacy and possibly others?  And the TN type was like a 5:4 instead of 4:3?  Anyway, I obviously don't have all my facts together so just asking...is this straightened out?

And will they come out with more using Happ controls like on the KI Pro?  And if so, what games?

I recently grabbed the X-Men cab on sale for $500.  Somewhat ridiculously, I got it for the least recognized game on there, Avengers in Galactic Storm, a person Mame favorite and guilty pleasure.  I also like Captain America and X-Men.  But moreover, I LOVE the bright colors, stick and button colors, and cab art along with the molded coin door, very cool.  Just wish the coin doors had the led backlight to them.  But it has gotten a LOT of play from me already; the controls while not top shelf are better than acceptable, I am finding.  Not too much trouble pulling off Dragon Punch / Fireball moves in Avengers GS.  And the buttons feel much improved vs the buttons I tried on a Golden Axe cab or the Atari Tempest legacy cab (but maybe they're the same brand so I'm insane?).

Reminds me that I have the bits to light up my coin doors, job for the weekend

Agree with the monitors. I have the 35th Streetfighter legacy one and it is great, the Centipe legacy (putting aside the aspect ratio problems etc as well...) is quite bad. I have picked up a Dell off ebay to fit, just waiting on my replacement cab as the first one had a problem with the control deck and the UK supplier could only swap out the entire thing not just the part, this after I had built it up, quite tedious! Will check it all over before assembling this next one!

nothing wrong at all. plays perfectly fine.

Before going the Dell route, might want to look here:  https://arcademodup.com/product/arcade1up-19-monitor-upgrade/  It's $190, but looks like an easy swap.  All depends on what it's worth to you I guess.  And what you paid for the Dell :)

Hmm when my trackball worked for all of 20 seconds and I tried Centipede the aspect ratio looked squashed compared to the real cab in my local arcade, maybe it was just the massive gaps on the sides giving the impression. Yer colours were ok just it needs the brightness toning down, shame you can't simply adjust the settings like a normal monitor or how I can in my Pacman legacy which I have converted to run a Pi

19" one is nice but i'm in the UK and I picked up the dell for ~$40 so that will do for now. I do have a 19" Dell in my loft as it happens so might be able to use that further down the line in one of mine :)

the screen is much smaller, and also no curvature since its not a crt.

the actual aspect ratio of the game is fine.

these are based on earlier releases, but comments still apply

Someone asked about the Centipede and Millipede games, being
smaller on the deluxe, and that the aspect ratios of both
games looked wrong on there, and on the regular cabinets.

So I looked into it. The arcade 1up pictures, used stock photos,
so they aren't exactly accurate, but are close. The deluxe image
IS incorrect, so I had to fix it to match.

I used reference issues from youtube.

Bottom Line:
====================================================
Aspect ratio is close on Regular, and Deluxe versions.

Incorporating 5x vertical scaling, and 4x horizontal gives
1280x960 pixel resolution on the 1280x1024 screen. With 32
pixels unused on sides.

So, yes, the images are mostly correct, but much smaller.

The standard cabinet is 71% the size of the arcade screen
on a standard 19 inch monitor.

The deluxe cabinet is 60% the size of the Arcade 1up
standalone cabinet.

Results summarized below. (sizes in inches, and pixels)
---------------------------------------------------------------------
size      height     width    ratio    resolution screen res
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
arcade monitor 19 inch    15.5       12.75  6:5  1.2   256x240      240p

---------------------------------------------------------------------------
arcade 1up
standard       17 inch    13.256    10.643  5:4  1.25  1024x1280    n/a

---------------------------------------------------------------------------
arcade 1up
deluxe         17 inch    10.643    13.256  4:5  0.8   1280x1024    n/a
---------------------------------------------------------------------------

partycade      17 inch    Onscreen 11   10  4:5   1.1

centipede
legacy         17 inch    Onscreen 10    9  5:4   1.11

area comparisons
-------------------------
arcade monitor   =    197.625 in2

arcade 1up standard = 141 in2       = 71% of arcade

arcade 1up deluxe   = 84.3 in2      = 60% of arcade 1up
