godslabrat
It has USB ports, and there are official usb-> cube adaptors. Not a big fan of the cube controller, but it would be a nice option to have.
Rick Dangerous
Why do people like the GameCube controllers so much for smash? Like what is it about them that make them perfect for the game. I was surprised that was a thing on the Wii U because you think the pro controllers would have been just fine..and ditto for the nice solid Switch pro controllers. godslabrat
The Cube version of the game was the first one to really get "big", so the controller became the default. The N64 controller was always divisive, and the standard was set by the time the Wii came along.

The other part of it is that Melee is still regarded as the best Smash so far by a lot of people, who also still play it on the Gamecube. omegadot
Regarding the GCN controller and Smash, I have been told that lag on the wireless controllers is also an issue. The GCN controller was the last official corded controller, I think. I happen to really like it, but I never bothered using it on the Wii U. I didn't like it that much. That said, if I got a USB adaptor at MSRP and it works with the wavebirds, that's a cheaper way for me to get 4 player all using a normal controller since I have a bunch of them.
