How could I miss the first part of the ABBUC's A8 games? I tried to check the schedule in this thread but somehow the AA site was down. Then checked at Twitch and it said it would be at the same time than Tuesdays... Then I came early and the stream already finished! Then I saw Twitch notifications in my phone, lost among hundreds of other notifications... Damn!

Anyway, I started to watch the recording and the following screen catched my attention:

What is Atari looking at? It is not Bernie... Might be the treat balls over the shelf? I'm not sure he could see those from there. Or might be just that the neon light bewithes him? If so, probably he thinks that Bernie is the God of the Light... 😂

BTW, congrats for the new katkam.

Atari is definitely looking at the treats that are on the shelf right above where the camera can show. I believe you can see them in the shot where I tilt up to the three shelves of games above us. Here's a good shot of that from the stream. Just above us you can see all the things the cats want, the treat ball, the bells, the catnip and the box of treats. Atari is in the room right now, doing the exact same thing. If left alone long enough, those treats would be all over the floor. 🙂

Thank you! I think it's going to be a great help for doing the show and the quality is so much better than the last camera.

Maybe poor Bernie would be more safe, if you move the box somewhere else.

Bernie might have to be relocated, for his own safety. He has a family to support.

Very good show. But it seems funny how disconnected from the homebrew scene the three seem to be. E.g why did they went through the whole process of creating cart shells and boxes? They could have asked Al instead. I am not sure if they were or even are aware. Also David is pretty proud of his QR-code generator (rightly!). But then wonders, why nobody has done it since.

Well, I did one 3.5 years ago. And its even more capable then David's.

So I wonder why they seem so disconnected. They are on the shows, they sure must have been made aware of the homebrew scene. Yet, they either don't know or completely ignore it.

They did, and I know they asked others as well.  I was probably the first one they spoke with about producing cartridges for them back in 2019, but it's obvious the quotes they weren't happy with the pricing they were receiving, so they decided to roll their own boards, shells, etc.  They didn't even tell me they weren't interested, they just stopped responding to me.

There are other 2600 games with a QR code as well, it's not magic.

Of course they were.  I saw them looking at the Tyre Trax box at PRGE at the AtariAge booth when that came out, and they ended up commissioning the same artist, @Atariboy2600, to create artwork and packaging for them.

I have opinions, but I will remain diplomatic here.

Ah, that's interesting. Thanks for telling us.

Yes and no. David's and my code create the QR code on-the-fly, the codes are variable. And that's the tricky part. All other games I am aware about display static, predefined QR codes. Or do you know some?

That's competition, which usually is good for customers. Of course not so much for people like you. :)

They once stated that they are not doing homebrews.

I think the recognized marketplace term now is "PRObrew". Kinda like it, but I hope that doesn't diminish the professional work YOU do, Thomas. Wouldn't hesitate to call your games probrews. Thoughts?

They do not like their games being called homebrew. It was quite a contentious statement when they made it during the interview on our Circus Convoy premiere stream and there was a lively discussion that fell out from it.

Keep in mind that David Crane co-founded Activision, the first 3rd party console game developer in the world and it was synonymous with top quality Atari 2600 games. The word homebrew back then meant one person at home working on a small game vs what they were doing at Activision, a multi-million dollar corporation. Our community has embraced the word homebrew and we hold the games that are made today to a massively high standard that push the 2600 to heights never even thought possible. To us, there is no shame associated with the word.

I'm personally not too interested in getting into the weeds of the terminology of homebrew vs probrew vs aftermarket because in the end they're all games that we enjoy on our Atari consoles. I don't think anyone is going to avoid or flock to one or another game based on what term is attached to them, the important part is that they're fun to play. 🙂

I don't think it's either case. They're definitely aware of it, they go to the conventions and see the games that are released, they just don't live and breathe it like we do. 🙂

I don't care for terms, but for games. :)

Just a fun fact, I believe the earliest instance of QR code in a 2600 game might be in 'The Stacks' from 2012(?) but it was a hard coded image pointing to a website, so it's obviously not in the same category.
