  1. 1. Is Opcode EVER going to release Donkey Kong Arcade?

After getting home, I tried DKA on my Pheonix console and it doesn’t work at all.

When you select the ROM, it says ‘Reading Megacart’ and then the screen remains black. ? I even tried using my AtariMax cartridge and the same issue occurred.

Could the ROM file be corrupt somehow? All my other ROM files work without issue.

Any suggestions?

Which firmware version are you using? I know something was fixed recently.

Just tried the ROM on my Phoenix and it appears to work fine using the built-in SD card reader.  However, when I use my AtariMax I get a range of problems which change each time I reset the system and start the ROM.  These problems range from graphical corruption to the game freezing.  In fact, I cannot get past the title and animated intro sequences before a problem occurs.

My Phoenix is up to date with firmware as-is my AtariMax (unless there was a recent update that I'm unaware of).

The same ROM in the same AtariMax works fine on my real (F18A modded) CV.

The person who sold me the Pheonix warned me never to upgrade the firmware due to potential issues. Sounds like I may have to upgrade if I want to play Donkey Kong. What firmware version are you using?

I'm using the latest from here https://atariage.com/forums/topic/297894-collectorvision-phoenix-release-thread/

System = Rev A0

ColecoVision = Rev 7

I’m still using the firmware that came with the system. The person I bought the console from warned me against upgrading the firmware due to possible HDMI issues.

You were misinformed. The hdmi issues with Phoenix are twofold and one of them is present in all cores so far.

One is a hardware issue that can cause the unit to stay powered on even when it is switched off. No firmware can fix that. The only option to fix that is to put another device in the hdmi chain that won't back power the unit. The second batch of Phoenix were tweaked to fix this in hardware.

The other issue is a firmware issue, but it's present on all versions so far. Which means your unit would be affected even with the base/original firmware. Something with the pixel clock timing is off (or something like that) and some TVs don't like it.

They have supposedly been rewriting the core to fix it for the last 2.5 years or so. But every time someone asks about it, either no reply is given or it's supposedly going to be worked on "real soon".

But this is a bit OT. Bottom line is there is no harm in upgrading to the current core to make sure the game works.

Thanks, @nick3092 - I appreciate the clarification. My Pheonix console works fine; no HDMI issues either.

I’ll upgrade the console later today when I arrive home. I really want to play DKA!

Much obliged! I had a feeling it had something to do with firmware, but I wasn’t entirely sure.

IIRC you should also find out if your Phoenix is from the first run or the second, but I don't recall if this holds true for the CV Core or just the Phoenix firmware. So do your homework first.

There was some confusion at one point. At any rate, if anything goes wrong you can always downgrade it back - upgrading the Coleco core doesn't affect the boot system.

Quick question: since I no longer own any  ColecoVision controllers (I sold my aging Coleco with its controllers on eBay, after I bought the Phoenix), how do I access  the number menu to install the core update? Will a keyboard work in place of the Coleco controller’s numpad?

I think a keyboard is supposed to work...?

But assuming you are using the SNES pad, here are the keys:

Left Side Button = B
Right Side Button = A
Purple Button(SAC3) = Y
Blue Button(SAC4) = X
1 = Left Trigger + Y
2 = Left Trigger + X
3 = Left Trigger + B
4 = Left Trigger + A
5 = Left Trigger + Select
6 = Left Trigger + Start
7 = Right Trigger + Y
8 = Right Trigger + X
9 = Right Trigger + B
0 = Right Trigger + A
* = Right Trigger + Select
# = Right Trigger + Start

People, please don’t post pictures. You read the terms with your ROM. Otherwise I will close this thread.
As for Phoenix, please update your firmware to the latest version.

My apologies; I was just excited that it worked.
