Fingolfin
Thank you very much for adding to the list erichenneke! I look forward to trying Rain of Terror; thank you again for your part in making and sharing this and for what you do as a coder and creator for the A8 scene! I will add Frederik Holst (Freetz) and Jurgen van Radecke (tf_hh) to the list of contemporary coders and creators of software and hardware to be acknowledged and thanked! TheMontezuma
@Fingolfin Please don't get me wrong but it looks like a mutual admiration society. I understand that you had good intensions but you will always miss somebody this way. Since you wanted to appreaciate all creators, it would be better not to name any person at all, rather than to forget somebody and make him sad. It is just my opinion. Marcin I truly see where you are coming from Marcin, these lists can be good and bad, I personally can't / don't remember all those who have made stuff but when I see it posted I ALWAYS make sure to thank and encourage them, not only good manners but nice to give creative feedback to those helping us all have fun. On the other hand its nice to see a list that shows just how many great folk still add to this hobby even now and its nice to give a collective thank you but as you say they can also be seen as a clique even though its not. I always like to look for the positive at things like this and its nice to have the list but best also to thank the people at the time they release something, that is when they will appreciate being appreciated more.. To the great folk who do anything in whatever capacity towards this wonderful hobby, I salute you, no matter what you think of how big your work is its always welcomed and enjoyed...Size does not always matter, its the thought involved (The wife won't go for that line though)
Fingolfin
Update, a little overdue. Marcin You are right Marcin. There's been a pattern of my posting every name that is suggested for adding here; this isn't the best way to pay tribute to all of you coders and creators but I wanted to to try to generate some positivity here in the AtariAge A8 forums and thank those who bring, share and offer so much to us non-coders and non-creators (which I'm pretty certain is the majority of AtariAge members, and not considering how active members are posting/replying: it would seem in my brief time here that many members don't post that much). It hasn't all been as intended -- to celebrate, acknowledge and thank current and contemporary A8 coders and creators. Eventually I'd like to have just the list, but I think there are others who still need and deserve to be added! I certainly don't want to make anyone sad or generate any bad feelings over this thread. Thank you for your reply and thank you very much for all you do as a coder and creator for A8! Thank you Mclaneinc for posting your positive and optimistic reply! Thanks for your support on this project; it is appreciated. I have added both baktra and HardCore to the list. I'm in the process of trying to find out more about more of these current A8 coders and creators and add as many new folks as I can. I feel like an idiot for missing so many important people, but you all know I'm new here still and hopefully this is true: to err is human, to forgive divine! Or is it more like the road to hell is paved with good intentions! Best Regards Fingolfin
Fingolfin
Needed to add some more names. Norbert Kehrer Paul Lee slampam twh Wilmunder Thank you very much to all of you for what you do: coding and creating for A8! Please keep names of current and contemporary coders and creators of software and hardware who still need to be acknowledged and thanked coming. Thank you to all who read this thread. Thank you in advance for considering adding more names of current coders and creators who should still be acknowledged and thanked! Bunsen
I do not want to sound negative and I'm grateful for the many dedicated contributions to the community, but this list seems pretty useless. It would be better to use the energy to feed existing databases like Demozoo so that every developer gets the attention he deserves. https://demozoo.org/productions/?platform=16&production_type= Lotek Style has done an tremendous job maintaining the Demozoo database and compiling the Fujiology archive (http://fujiology.untergrund.net/) But he could also need help. Everyone can help build the database. Then there is not only a list of names, but also all productions of these persons.
Fox-1 / mnx
That's funny. Found some of my own stuff in that database which I haven't got myself anymore (or at least cannot find).
Fingolfin
Bunsen, I am sorry you feel the list here is useless. Thank you very much for your reply and the links for demozoo.org and fuijiology. I have not seen either of these sites/resources before. Thank you very much for bringing them and their creator Lotek Style to my attention and sharing these links/resources with all who read this thread. Thank you very much to all who have read or do read this thread. Please continue considering adding to the list to acknowledge and thank current and contemporary coders and creators of software and hardware who still need to be recognized and thanked! Thank you in advance. Best Regards Fingolfin P.S. I never intend nor wish to disrespect, question or undermine anyone's "authoritah!" Apologies if I have inadvertently done so to anyone! +CharlieChaplin
I do not want to sound negative and I'm grateful for the many dedicated contributions to the community, but this list seems pretty useless. Everyone can help build the database. Then there is not only a list of names, but also all productions of these persons. Well, I am a fan (and supporter) of pigwa: http://ftp.pigwa.net/ Uploaded not only a small part of my collection, but also various CD's and DVD's with games, demos and applications (e.g. uploaded the Nir Dary collection which was faulty at first, since my CD's were defective and others contributed to this, so afaik it is complete now; uploaded also the CTH collection and various other collections). So if Demozoo or Fujilogy is searching for more demos, they may take a deeper look there, e.g. at this subdir: http://ftp.pigwa.net/stuff/collections/atari_8bit_demos_and_intros/ and many many other subdirs. The size of 408GB is quite impressive in my eyes (and if they want to sort by author rather than by demo filename, they have a lot of work to do). Its a Sisyphos-like work, similar to my various attempts to convert the HV SID collection into Atari images (not sorted by author's names, but by 8.3 filenames instead, so they can be played with various A8 SID player programs)... Back to topic, I would not list nor thank all A8 coders and distributors that exist, otherwise the list gets way too long and maybe some Atarians get listed that have already passed away. Instead I would limit the "thank you" listing to actual programmers and distributors, e.g. from the year 2018 and mention why I thank them (for games, demos, tools, gfx, snd, hardware, etc.). That way, one could create a new list in 2019 and the forthcoming years... Edited April 28, 2018 by CharlieChaplin
Fingolfin
Thank you very much for your reply and suggestions here CharlieChaplin! "Back to topic, I would not list nor thank all A8 coders and distributors that exist, otherwise the list gets way too long and maybe some Atarians get listed that have already passed away. Instead I would limit the "thank you" listing to actual programmers and distributors, e.g. from the year 2018 and mention why I thank them (for games, demos, tools, gfx, snd, hardware, etc.). That way, one could create a new list in 2019 and the forthcoming years... I would like to do what you have suggested here: I think it is a great call to have a yearly thank you page here at the AtariAge A8 forums to recognize and express appreciation for all current coders and creators who work on stuff and release it in a given year. " -- CharlieChaplin (post above; I messed up the quote formatting while trying to make uniform the font/typeface for this whole reply). After considering your proposal -- which echoes sentiments expressed in other posts and replies here -- I can see the benefits would be (at minimum): 1) the list would be accurate, smaller and more manageable, readable and accessible for all (hopefully much more so than the present, existing list) 2) there'd be an active and open opportunity for all AtariAge members to specifically thank coders and creators of software and hardware for what they make/do/add/contribute to and share with and sell to the A8 community; these thanks could be expressed whenever, even over the course of years, but would still be focussed on acknowledging and expressing specific authors for specific works for specific years (specifically with specifics that specify -- to all: that's me making fun of my own diction...not poking fun at anyone or anything else) 3) there'd be less likelihood of anyone being left out and feeling badly (again hopefully, much more so than the present list) 4) there'd be greater integrity and foundation in acknowledgement of and thanking coders and creators by way of specifically thanking those authors for their specific works (again hopefully, more so than the present list) 5) there'd be a process, practice and routine, planned in advance and established for the purpose of acknowledging and thanking coders and creators on a yearly basis Perhaps to be as egalitarian as possible there could be an anonymous poll -- if possible -- and use results based on number of votes or nominations needed that are predetermined to qualify folks being on the list for a given year??? I hate the sound of that in terms of any sort of popularity contest but it may be the best way to arrive at eligibility; at present it should be obvious to all that I am neither qualified nor would I ever want to make such a determination. With respect to CharlieChaplin and others who have suggested something along the lines of what he has outlined above, I would like to keep the list at present and try to edit it as necessary. That is, in addition to creating and establishing a yearly list and establishing a routine, process and practice for doing so. Can I please ask anyone and everyone who is willing and interested to pm me and let me know who has passed away and has been gone for more than 10 years and is on the list? I would also like to please ask for help identifying what everyone on the list has authored; I know what some have done but ask for the AtariAge community's help identifying all specific works and contributions for all of the contemporary and current A8 coders and creators. I would like the existing list to be as accurate and specific as possible. Thank you very much in advance for considering doing so! Edit/addition: Please, in an attempt to be discreet and try to minimize any further unintended collateral damage, please pm me if you can and don't post here with respect to my asking for help with the two requests for help above. Do not wish to be secretive, just discreet and hopefully allow for this thread to be more tactful in addressing change than it has been so far. At present, as I initially indicated I'd like to acknowledge and thank all current and contemporary coders and creators going back the last 10 years, I would, with this thread, like to continue to honor that. One thing that is very unfortunate at the moment is that the thread as is shows all the people I missed along the way -- this is terrible! The list has quadrupled or quintupled in size since my first post. I am very sorry to anyone and everyone I did not include from the start. Lots of folks were missed initially and I can do nothing about that now; I have to believe there are some current and contemporary A8 coders and creators who are still missing from the list... At some point, if possible and appropriate I would like to have just a list with names of current and contemporary coders and creators that is just that: a list without the replies history and accompanying issues that go along with the development of this thread. As it stands this thread has become a mixed bag of acknowledgment, thank yous but also identifies all the people who were left out, with the reality that there is now probably a greater emphasis, at least for some reading this thread, on those that were/had been/have been left out. I recognize this is problematic in more than one way. I wouldn't want the history here deleted but would hope this thread might eventually fade away and be replaced by a simplified and more detailed and precise list. Not for me and my shortsightedness and mistakes made but for what was intended in the first place. Thank you very much to all contemporary coders and creators of A8 software and hardware who make, sell and share their contributions with us all! Not sure what you all think. Please let me know here or via pm. Thank you very much for reading this thread. Thank you very much for considering replying and/or adding more names to the list of current and contemporary coders and creators who still need to be acknowledge and thanked! Bunsen
So if Demozoo or Fujilogy is searching for more demos, they ... "they"? It's kind of a wiki. Everyone can add information. You only have to register and then you can start within seconds.
