Video
Yeah, games have shown minimal improvement in what, the last 15 years or so? Yes, by doing 3d you'd essentially cut poly count in half, but really, would it be missed? Switch was already a generation behind at launch, and has done quite well, despite not having the horsepower, per say. Cutting the poly count didn't seem to hurt the 3ds, and I know a lot of games didn't support 3d at all, and imo, they weren't spectacular step ups from the 3d games. Nintendo IS working on a replacement to the switch, speculation says its coming in 24, but who knows. But hey, if I can get a system that looks like PS4 or xbone, and can do 3d out of the box, that would be awesome. While 3d would be nice, I assume any switch successor will be around those last gen consoles in terms of power. Tbh, outside resolution, I've noticed very little graphical improvement since the PS3/360 era, and those are rapidly coming up on 20 years old now. Tanooki
Well that's a bit extreme saying there wasn't improvement, it just wasn't as obvious if you didn't think about it, you don't need to look for it either. The models are even more on those triangles for more detail, but it's the other detail that PS3 even lacked but hid well in that time. You now can have far more blades of grass, particles of dust or whatever in the air, more detail with waves or splash, details in clouds to gases and smokes. It's those secondary details you know are there but don't always focus on being more sucked into the action ...and then the added oomph of the hardware for more independent if not just more intelligent Ai routines of the enemies of whatever you're interacting with naughty or nice. Far more detail into the distance of created terrains without detail loss, this was the one crippler on the Switch which ended up masking it. It masked with hiding not making stuff behind objects to dynamic resolution and detail levels of X objects or spaces in the screen after X distance from you. If that wasn't a block on it, you would have had a LOT more of those current to its launch games ported down to it as the engines are all capable of using it. A new switch would be more PS4/pro era stuff or just between 4 and 5. It would be a 4K system docked, perhaps still 720 since as noted Steam deck is too on the go which would save a LOT on battery power giving more time to game off screen untethered from a power adapter. This system because of that level would have a split set of assets in many cases for those using 4K and those not and not on those using it just as a handheld. The thing is, that level of power could easily still let someone release a last (to switch-current) generation level of detailed game allowing for that New3DS style of head tracked 3D game play. The issue would be what about TV mode? Another dumpy Wii style sensor bar, but not...as it would be more like a 3D set of 2 cameras like a sony eyetoy? There are 3D TVs, they don't require any head tracking (but they require glasses of course). Anyway, people who only play docked are often graphic whores than will only care for 4K (even though it probably will be fake 4K anyway) and not 3D, so I don't see it as a big problem. And the next Switch has a bigger screen than the original Switch, which is already way bigger than a 3DS screen.
Tanooki
Well 3D glasses TVs are kind of out, they more or less died out at least around here they have. And sure graphics whores or not, you have to appeal to the widest base so they can not be dismissed. I get it, I'd rather them cater to not that type, but at some happy middle ground they should and will. My guess you'll get a docked 1440p mode as the tops, and usually just your 720-1080 level stuff most TVs still lie within.
