I revive this topic as i finally made the pcb board i promised!

This combines the 2 adapters needed before (the one i made and one from bohoki) and allows you to connect any 9pin Joystick designed for atari,amiga,c64,amstrad cpc etc to an Atari 5200 joy port!

Here is a 3D view:

 prototype5200.thumb.png.dd273180cc8e7db8deb3e9bd7b43ef82.png

It looks like the adapter i currently make for a 15pin PC joystick, but the circuit is custom made to fit for a 15Pin D male game port of an Atri 5200 (also the resistors are changed from 47K to 250K).

Unfortunately there is only one problem: Since i don't have any ATARI 5200 to test it, i can't verify that the BOARD works as it should be!

Maybe i'll order a small batch of 4-5 pcbs in the near future, but for the moment, i'll give you  the gerber files for the board, in case anyone want to build and test one for himeself:

atari5200.zip 8.83 kB · 2 downloads

You will need a 10k 5pin network resistor, 4X250K resistors,1X100nF ceramic capacitor, a 9Pin D male connector and a 15PIn D female connector. Finnally you will need a PIC 16f630 MCU flashed with the program i made for the adapter (give me a note to send you one, if you are going to try this).

So with this adapter all that is needed is just this plugged into my 5200 controller port and the DB9 controller plugged into the db9 port on the other end of the adapter right? Nothing else needed? Any chance of a second db15 on it to plug in the 5200 controller to use for the keyboard at some point? If you need someone to confirm it works, I'm more than happy to test it out for you. I'll buy a couple of the pcbs from you and build them up. I'm pretty handy with this sort of thing :) Sorry if you have already gone over this, I'm a little confused as there is a ton of info across the 3 pages of this thread from different people talking about what is exactly going on here.

Well, that's the general idea :-)

As for the 2nd db15 to plug a 5200 controller with keyboard, i would suggest first, to confirm that adapter works ok (john_q_atari already took this job) ,and then, i could also add a 2nd 15pin connector to the board, although this might make the adapter a bit wider, and i wonder if this could cause a problem fitting 2  of these adapters in adjacent ports, on a 4port Atari 5200.

Could anyone measue the distance between the ports on a 4port 5200?

I was already thinking about making a dual-port version of this where two of them could be used in a four-port console. I hadn't got around to actually measuring because I only have 4-port consoles, but it would be very easy to design one that uses 15-pin D-sub IDC connectors on ribbon cables. This is how I would do it even with a 3D-printed shell since you can design it to have some slop for the ports even when mounted captively a very specific distance apart.

That's a very good idea! I could either:

-  Remove the attached 15 pin female connector from pcb, and add a dual row pin header which will plug into a ribon adapter similar to the one shown in the 1st photo,

- Leave pcb as it is, and add an extra pin header (which doesn't need much space) to plug a similar ribbon adapter for plugging the extra numeric keypad!

I'd say the 2nd option is more easy to be made. I was wondering though, does the 15pin D ribbon female connector fits into a 4port 5200? The "ears" with the holes on each side of the 15pin connector add quite a bit to the overall width, resulting in ~4cm total width...

I've used them for Neo Geo, which looks just as deep. I recall removing the metal parts so that they fit a little deeper, just in case.

And i was wondering... it's impossible Steve saw this, and said nothing about it!

As it seems there is quite an interest for such an adapter, so i already have 2 atari age members who said they will take over the "test & verify" job!

And if all goes well,i'm thinking of adding an extra 15pin D connector to plug the keyboard controller too!

The PIC 16F630 chips that I ordered came in. Currently having some difficulty getting the chip, my generic pic kit3, and the mplab v4.15 software to all work together. (chip isn't getting detected). I've had problems in the past with another PIC chip and another project that I did eventually get working. (can't remember my solution at the moment other than changing/configuring programmer voltage generation setting which I can't find at the moment in the software...)

ikonsgr, is the 15to9.hex software you posted identical to what is on the 16F630 chip on your 9to9 adapter previously mentioned in this thread?

Definitely interested in one of these adapters.  I've pretty much shelved my 5200 2 port due to the infuriating controller, and lack of composite support.  I've pretty much figured now that I have the machine, the upgrades will come later.  I just need to be patient.  I had been holding out some hope for support for the Jag controller, since I have two of those.

Super excited about this. I just plugged in my 5200 for the first time in a while and bought an adapter from @ikonsgr yesterday. I can't wait to get it and to have a reliable controller for the system. If it all works out I'll be buying a few more.

So how would we use either the number pad on the 5200 controller for the games that support it.  If I'm following you right, we can only plug in a replacement joystick or controller (2600 or Genesis) into the adapter.  I'm thinking I need a second adapter for it.

Build a D-Sub 15 Y-cable with the utilized pins going straight through and the keypad connections going to the other connector. Some Y-cables for PC joysticks might even work.

As i mentioned before,if first tests prove that the design works ok,i may add a header to the pcb, for connecting a keypad along with the 2600 joystick controller

I have purchased two of your adapters in the past but I am very interested in this new adapter. Plan on selling me 4 of them ;)

No one could ever accuse you of lack of enthusiasm that's for sure. So one for each port of a 4port? ?

Just now seeing this - Wow! Hope someone can build one and get it tested soon. If I can be of help, I'm willing to be involved in testing.

So (if built), is this combining the bohoki adapter you talk about in your videos and the ikonsgr74 adapter you talked about in your videos? So therefore we would just need this one adapter to do both of those jobs?  Just want to make sure I understand...

Yeap, that's the general idea, if testing proves it will work of course... ;-)
