I'm THOROUGHLY confused. This Atari shell company has preorder scam after preorder scam and never releases anything. Is this the same "Atari" that's licensing stuff to AtGames? or is that the old Infogrames? Or are they both Infogrames?

The company formerly known as Infogrames renamed themselves to Atari after one of their bankruptcies. They license out the name and IP whenever they can. Yes, they're the same dotards running the "Atari VCS" crowdfunding debacle.

Oof. That's a shame. I was somehow under the impression that the Atari name had been split up but I think that was Commodore being separated from Amiga.

I don't know what you know so I apologize if this is too rudimentary.

  1. First, there was ATARI (1972, Pong times)
  2. then, Warner bought it, it blew up big, (Atari 2600 times) then collapsed like a balloon, millions of dollars in losses.
  3. in 1984, they split it into 2 companies: Atari CORP (home consoles and computers, pre-1984 arcade games like Asteroids, Centipede), and Atari GAMES (post-1984 Arcade)
  4. Atari CORP was bought by the Tramiels, formerly of Commodore. 7800, ST, Falcon, Lynx, Jaguar. Bankrupt in 1996.
  5. Atari GAMES was bought up by Midway, and is now owned by Warner (again!) ... think Paperboy, Marble Madness, STUN Runner.
  6. Bones of Atari CORP went thru different owners -- Hasbro, Infogrames. Infogrames went bankrupt, sold off a bunch of stuff (most notably Battlezone)
  7. Infogrames renamed themselves Atari, still has the rights to pre-1984 arcade games (see 1up cabinets) and home consoles/computers (see Atari Flashback, Atari Vault)
  8. Modern Atari, like post-Warner Atari, is mostly a brand custodian, living off of past glories -- but even moreso than in the Tramiel days. They only have about a dozen full time employees, so they outsource development, and make money licensing the old games, which seem to pull in enough sales to keep them afloat but not enough to pull ahead.

Thanks that is helpful. I lost track of it all after #4, I think.

So Warner / Atari Games is mostly a licensing arm for the more modern Atari arcade games, and is probably legit even if it's just milking existing licenses.

Infogrames / Atari Corp the brand licensing for all the emulated throwbacks that get Mr. Mullet so upset AND behind these preorder scams.

They're both milking old games. They're both legit, if somewhat creatively bankrupt. Warner publishes a bunch of DC LEGO and Injustice games. Atari mostly sells t-shirts now.

Warner (holder of Midway) has the games on the Rampage/Defender/Joust/Gauntlet machine. The first 3 are old Midway games, Gauntlet is from Atari Games.

Atari has licenses for the Asteroids and Centipede cabinets.

Capcom is Street Fighter of course, and Namco is Galaga/Galaxian/Pac-Man. Taito is Space Invaders.

I would not be at all surprised to see a future Mortal Kombat (Midway by way of Warner) cabinet if these sell well.

Of course they're all available in collections for ps4/xbone and ps3/xb360, no need to get little arcade machines unless you're into the little people arcade scene.

It just occurred to me that IF ...

Disney were to buy Atari, then they would have the Marvel Comics characters under the same roof as Asteroids, Centipede, and Tempest ...and Star Wars, and ESPN, and ABC, etc

which would be a nice counterpoint to Warner having Midway alongside DC Comics characters, HBO, . All presumably under the AT&T banner sooner or later, with CNN, Cartoon Network, HBO ... https://www.businessinsider.com/att-time-warner-acquisition-what-it-will-own-2018-6

The mashups could be epic if anyone cared enough about the old games.

I like the look of this product, too. However, like Flojomojo said, just get a Flashback Portable as it has an SD card slot, more built-in-games, and definitely (2018 version) will be released soon.

I wonder if this will make it to the US, i love the look of it.

Yes, I recall viewing this discussion. I don't know what the delay is. Probably some legal and/or financial holdups. Still, it does look cool, but has some serious shortcomings versus what AtGames is throwing out there.

Here's where we first started talking about this, more than a year ago. That's quite a delay, I wonder what the problem might be?

Just as a heads up, although 'not currently for sale' in the U.S.- you can order it on Amazon UK and have it shipped.

https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B076BVMSQC?pf_rd_p=855cdcfd-05d9-474f-b84d-8286a3530ba1&pf_rd_r=HSVDXFFN7R8KAY6AFR9E

Currently the exchange rate works out to $51 shipped.

The reason it was pulled off the market last year was so they could address some complaints and improve the product.

A friend of mine just got his delivered (to USA), and claims it's terrible. Lots of glitches and the audio is high pitched. He did say you can wedge a Raspberry Pi in there pretty easily though!

How often are you really going to use this, and would it make any difference hooking it up to a tv.

What about using the controls then, i take it those would still work.
