The Lower Planes BBS

Aunty Entity

Recommended Posts

Hey Guys,

For a new retro blast from the desperately late 80's early 90's The Lower Planes BBS is back in business.(Read play) at tlp.zapto.org Either telnet or ssh login as bbs with the password bbs, and it will forward you to the first available node, of which there are 5. If cli is no good to you, you can also get there by http just have a look about and head to the login page.

This thing actually runs on x86 hardware, when I first fired it up, I didn't have the cash to buy a second IIgs to turn into a BBS, so I got a 286 with a massive 40Mb HD. Best peripheral for your Apple II :P

We have Online Games, Message Areas with QWK support and 600year Warez dude.

And its the only SuperBBS in the world.

I have pong what've you got to trade for it?

ftp is also available....

Have a better one,

Aunty

TLP managed to snarf a mention in this edition of Paleotronic.

https://paleotronic.com/paleotron1018/paleotronic1018-75dpi.pdf

I've also had some Finnish guys looking around, at the last SuperBBS in existance.

Risto turned up first, Author of the SuperBBS Software followed by a "journalist"

doing an article on Finlands halcyon BBS days.

We have an alternate single page Mega Menu up as well as the original hierarchic menus. Mega Menu can be selected from the Main Menu should you wish to try it. It'll probably be slower to display, but with hotkeys enabled quicker to navigate once you get used to where all the keys are.

TLP's sister, pineapple.zapto.org has got its Hardware Database flying. It now matches manuals for cards if they available from the library, and the library itself is reasonably stocked, I didn't get as many matches as I thought I might from hardware to manuals, but then the library is full of other things aside from just manuals. On both sides, the PHP logic has improved so you don't get null results displayed, and any links are accurated not a click and pray affair.

Is SuperBBS the software you are using?

Yes it is, SuperBBS is a MS-DOS based piece of software, I used to run on a 2/386 30 odd years ago, so I could keep using my IIgs as my daily compute. It used to be a pretty common piece of software back in the day, so far as I can tell and find, TLP is now the only one in existance.

UPDATE UPDATE UPDATE UPDATE UPDATE UPDATE UPDATE UPDATE UPDATE UPDATE
=====================================================================

The Lower Planes now has....

A local weather page, not much use to you guys NOT in Melbourne
but still, its an advancement.

I've had to install a replacement ADSL modem, I suspect both latency
and throughput will have improved. It's negotiating better ADSL speeds
than the previous one.

Newsgroups remains in the pipes, RSN as they say, I'm getting closer
though, I've found the old software I used to use, its just a matter of finding
a UUCP host and getting it fully configured.

What's new?

We have TETRA online in the games dept. Anyone that enjoys a spin at Tetris will enjoy having a crack at this. You do want a reasonable ANSI emulation though, its all blocks strangely enough.

The menus have been revamped again. There are new "Pretty" ANSI screens which look nice, but are slower to load, "Basic" ANSI which are far faster, but less fandangled, and of course you've got the ASCII screens for the rest of us.

I've added some pictures, these were made with MegaTerm, a nice solid emulation with good colour use. I haven't tried spectrum but it ought to give reasonable results also.

No guesses to the origin of the goodbye screen... an oldy but a goodie....
