HSC16 Round 3: Satan's Hollow

From what I understand, the Atari 8-bit (and 5200) version never were released at all, these are dumps of finished prototypes that never went to production. Some claim the Atari version was done first, then ported to the C64. Notably CBS were supposed to release the Atari versions, while the C64 version was released by Commodore themselves.

 

Yep, I still have that disk too. ;) Both C64 and XE play about the same, with the exception being able to use Genesis/MD pads on XE. The 5200 version runs well, but too easy to hit shields when moving fast.

Satan's Hollow :evil: after still getting nowhere I figured it best to rack up some flags before crossing the bridge and improved to 65,700 :)

I did 22,900 on Little Devil. Interesting game... it's basically a clone of Bomb Jack with somewhat twitchy controls. Not bad, though.

It is surprisingly good, definitely has that one more go appeal. I've added a lot of comments/hints on the first post - will add some more in a minute :)

My strategy for Satan's Hollow

 

First memorise the stage order (it repeats after 24) so that you can be ready in the best position each time. The screen order changes at around screen 85 when it gets more difficult.

I usually cross the bridge on the 10th and 20th screens to get the cannon upgraded.

I then try to complete 60 ish more stages before crossing the bridge again as crossing the bridge increases the level of difficulty.

If I lose a life I cross the bridge as soon as possible to upgrade the cannon again. If the cannon drops to the lowest level it makes it difficult to shoot Satan when you cross the bridge.

Use the shield to tackle the pink gargoyles and the ones that throw the exploding rocks

Satan's Hollow (before reading McKong's tips above ;) ) managed a couple of bridge crossings to bag the flag bonuses, they also boost your firing rate if you've lost a life.

Little Devil - was determined to complete the 3rd round and somehow managed to get even further and bagged 5 of the blighters!

193,200. The green heads and the white balls are deadly, unless you have the shield which is the trick to the game, as is getting into a routine, finding the places you can wait and lure, and wiggling decathlon style to get the tricky ones usually at the same time as contorting to pressing select to reset the timer :-D

 

A good game despite it's faults with progressive difficulty, would be nice to see some new layouts, I quite like the sytle of the graphics, Dali-esque on a couple of levels at least.
