Read about Dandy using some neat tricks to get all of its monsters on screen, and it got me wondering: Did Gauntlet use any similar tricks to get the screen-filling number of monsters you saw, or was the hardware just able to handle that many sprites at once naturally?

Looking at the MAME source for the driver, the Gauntlet board has support for 1024 "motion objects". These object could also be a variable number of tiles in the X and Y direction.

There is also a playfield, so no sprites were needed for the background.

It's pretty safe to say, the hardware alone could handle enough sprites for Gauntlet.
