Plugs can be pins (male) and so can sockets (SIO socket is male, joystick socket is male). Plugs can also be hollow pins inside a plastic container. That's female. Some (or all?) of the Molex SIO connectors/plugs are female and have hollow pins. similar to the 25 pin printer port on PC's back in the day. But the Chelco SIO connectors used pins that have no gender, even though they mate with male pins in the SIO socket. All 3D models are like this.
