What's the story behind the "World's Rarest Videogame" currently on Ebay?

Recommended Posts

I get pop-ups in my Facebook stream for random Ebay items.  One day this came up:

https://www.ebay.com/itm/Worlds-Rarest-Video-Game-Extra-Terrestrials-Atari-2600-Long-Lost-Video-Game/133121808686?hash=item1efead992e:g:puMAAOSwGgdciGgY

The "World's Rarest Video Game" - a Non-Atari game called "Extra Terrestrials".

If the link doesn't work, it is Ebay item # 133121808686.

What is the story behind this?  Is this legit, or a scam?  Or just wishful thinking?

If this was previously discussed forgive me -

Thanks.  Chris.

So much for the argument that releasing the rom of a once unreleased game affects the price of the product.  Even a boxed Air Raid did not go beyond a tenth of what is on offer.  Greed it seems does indeed leads to delusions of grandeur.

$90K is not an authoritative price. It's $90K because someone says it's $90K. And that is why the price is unaffected by a rom release. And too bad that EPROM is being exposed to light - weakening a 35 year old program.

Will it sell for some ridiculous amount of money? Sure. There's always someone waiting to be stupid.

The game is actually really rare, like Red Sea Crossing kind of rare. But its not $90,000 rare. The ROM was released sometime ago so there's no reason to buy it just to play it and the game sucks on top of that. Probably gonna be on eBay for a long time.

Wow. What a saga. And what a delusional “collector.”

Came in touting it as the greatest, rarest, and most valuable find in the history of gaming and went nuclear when people more knowledgeable and relevant than him (politely and fairly) suggested otherwise.

Yeah, I noted that too --- not exactly a good way to deal with an EPROM whose contents are that rare ;)

The price is always unaffected by a rom release for there is always someone, somewhere who will be willing to pay a an over inflated price for a one of a kind cart or Eprom.  In this case it is just sheer greed but then again it is his to do what he wants to do with it.  Maybe someone with more money than sense will entertain him, then again I truly doubt it.

Related to that, now there's a CCE cartridge set for sale for $14k (Canadian):

https://www.ebay.ca/itm/CCE-C-C-E-Color-Complete-Set-ATARI-2600-Video-Game-System-Dancing-Plate-Plates/291691429681

Crazy money.  Let's see how much they will actually go for!  I'm guessing there are lot of middle age folks who can spend some good money on their hobby.

At this rate I'm going to list my CIB NTSC Puzzy games on eBay.

I know it's the wrong question to ask, but is any fun to play? Doesn't look like it from the screenshot here.

It's not that much fun;

Romhunter has it nicely linked a playable online emulator from his page (http://www.atarimania.com/game-atari-2600-vcs-extra-terrestrials_27608.html?http://javatari.org/?PAGE_BACK_CSS=rgb(188,179,143)&ROM=http://www.atarimania.com/2600/dumps/extra_terrestrials.zip

That set's been up for a while, or maybe, like this copy of Extraterrestrials, it's been taken down a re-posted several times. I'd be interested in how much those 19 declined offers were for.

It's 2-player only, which doesn't help. And it doesn't emulate properly. Here's a video of it running on actual hardware.

It's could have been a cool game (Pac-Man Vs. 20 years ahead of it's time!) but it just ends up being a sad Pac-Man clone with only 1 enemy and no AI.

If you play using the javatari link above, you'll notice that the candy disappears when the alien is a few "spaces" to the right of them instead of as it passes over them. This was a problem in Stella as well when the ROM was first released. That was several versions ago though and I haven't tried it recently, so maybe it's been fixed.

I tried it on Stella 3.9.3 from 2014 and it worked fine.

Yep, this has been fixed in Stella for years now.  It's due to incomplete RSYNC emulation in other emulators.

A further simplified 2600 jawbreaker. ...

I like how he gets his "buyer/seller" stuff mixed up in the provisos and conditions. One example...

"* May encounter custom fees or other taxes in which the seller is solely responsible for and understands upon purchase of the game."

He means, of course, that the BUYER is solely responsible...

Another one..

"Upon purchase of this game, the seller is acknowledging the condition of the game based on all pictures and details provided."

Of course again, he means the BUYER is acknowledging....

Funny, really.
